And the ethics of a particular matter can sometimes really hinge on nitty-gritty specific details. Thanks for your post.

I would be against genetically modifying a viable human fetus, or even something that would normally develop into one. However, I wouldn't be against culturing human cells, and would love to hear that they're growing kidneys in a lab someday.

But when you're doing experiments on individual stem cells, it becomes hard to tell those two situations apart, and our common-sense notions of morality get befuddled. It's like an ethical version of quantum mechanics.

Oh .. I know. Some chose an arbitrary point when an egg and sperm meet to decide what is human.

I think that point is often chosen because it's not arbitrary. It's a significant developmental event. Twelve hours before, three weeks later; those are arbitrary points. Your second example of an arbitrary point, when the baby is born, isn't arbitrary either. A true arbitrary point would be something like "after the first trimester."

There's a few other significant points in the development of a baby, such as first mental activity, first heartbeat, and so on. Those aren't arbitrary either. They may not be the correct basis to distinguish a human from a fetus, but they aren't purely subjective.

If you just post some code without saying anything about licensing, copyright, granting permissions, etc. then people should assume they don't have permission to distribute it. It may be difficult for you to enforce, but someone would be an idiot to just assume it was there for the taking.

I have a question about that; I quite often browse the net for code samples. There are thousands of sites that people have posted "How to build a sample Direct3D application" or "How to access a parallel port" or whatnot. Sample code is presented, sometimes full (generally simple) programs, but no license is declared at all. I'm sure that as a practical matter, it's pretty safe to use those code snippets, because nobody will ever know or care. But legally, is code that has been freely published as training material, free without restrictions for those being trained to use?

Really? You pay for a 6mbps connection to Comcast? Or do you pay for a connection to Comcast, which is advertised as "UP TO 6mbps"

What's the difference? If I buy a soda and the restaurant says there's "UP TO 3 REFILLS", does that allow them to cut me off at two? Or am I entitled to three, but should restrain myself to two, because they don't really mean it?

I don't have any problem with Comcast implementing a cap. It makes perfect sense. It just needs to be advertised that way, right up front.

The eBay lawsuit against Craigslist isn't shaky at all; from everything I've seen, including their own admissions, Craigslist illegally diluted eBay's share in the company. I like Craigslist better than eBay, but I think they'll lose this one.

The Skype lawsuit seems pretty groundless, though. It's probably some lawyer feeling that they need to exhaust every legal option, even the craziest ones, before admitting a loss.

My company pays sales tax on online transaction in many states, just because of our warehouse located throughout the country.

But where NY is overreaching is in trying to interpret Amazon's affiliates in NY as a qualifying physical presence in NY. It's a power and money grab, in effect saying that "If someone you're in a business relationship with is in NY, than we will count you as being in NY also." Affiliates are not owned by Amazon, and should not count as a physical presence; they are separate entities. That's what Amazon's defense should be.
