Spot on, man. Everyone expresses this viewpoint with open-source software, but it's not very insightful. In fact, it's very trite. Not many of us are able to just get down and code something when we feel the need to have it.
Moreover, it's a perfectly valid point to say that the developers should finish their software before worrying about porting it. The desire for cross-platform compatibility is good, but meaningless if your software is incomplete because of it.
Exactly. I don't give my end-users admin access to their systems, because they will most likely completely mess things up if I do that. However, when one of them needs admin access, I don't whine about how they want to mess with my precious computers, I work to make sure that a) they're educated about how to not abuse this power, and b) the damage they can do is limited.
Not to mention that calling your customers stupid is abysmally poor. This guy could be well-meaning, but his whole submission just comes off as whining egotism.
Erm... you do realize that Vista has been out for over a year, right? It's hardly implausible to claim to have been using it as your main OS for that long.
In fact, I just looked up my invoice from newegg, and I ordered my copy of Vista Home Premium on 1/23/2007. I guess I just don't see what you're trying to say here.
Whoever modded this... you really suck at moderation. I asked an honest question. I am trying to engage in a meaningful discussion here, and you decide to come in with your mod points, and disrupt said meaningful discussion. Oh well, I hope you enjoyed yourself, I guess.
ever tried administrating Vista? NIGHTMARE! I dispute this. What tasks did you find difficult to accomplish? I ask because I've had no problems whatsoever with Vista's UI (although I guess I could be said to have an advantage, since I've been using it as my main OS for over a year).
its at least grounded in some basis of objective comparison. That's the problem. There is no possible basis of objective comparison which is meaningful. The point of a movie is to be enjoyed, and enjoyment is impossible to measure objectively. A review is simply an opinion, which means no more than yours or mine. The only difference is that some critic is getting paid to give his opinion for some reason. Maybe lots of people tend to agree with him, maybe he's capable of delivering his opinion in an entertaining way... it doesn't really matter, nor does it change the fact that he's just a guy giving an opinion.
This is a great idea. No, this is a terrible idea. Shuttleworth would do well to take a page out of Blizzard's book here, and release software when it's done, not a moment before. This insistence upon a rigid schedule is what leads to retarded things like releasing a LTS version of your distro with a beta browsser.
Not really. Unless you're going to not see the movie based on this review, you won't enjoy it more or less after having read this. So go see it (come on, it's Indiana Jones, it's worth it), and reserve judgement for when you've seen it.
Besides, anyone who claims that a sequel is so bad it taints the originals is an utter moron, and probably isn't worth listening to anyway. It is quite impossible for a movie to be that bad.
You are practically admitting it right here, that you KNOW and AGREE they are crappy movies!! Bull. If a movie entertains you, it's good. If it doesn't, it's crappy. There is ONE axis, no more, no less. A movie which is revolutionary or thought-provoking is just providing icing on the cake.
No. The new Star Wars was just shit. You're entitled to your (extremely wrong) opinion. The new Star Wars movies were quite good, with the first one being the worst in the saga, the second being somewhere in the middle, and the most recent being easily better than any of the originals. I mean, my God, it had everything you could ask for from Star Wars. It had cool battle scenes. That's what Star Wars is about! As an added bonus, it had an actual (interesting) PLOT, not the pile of shit that passed for a plot in the original Star Wars trilogy!
and have just as clean of a design. A rather unfair stipulation. Design is purely subjective, so you're essentially giving yourself a free rejection for anything, no matter how good.
Besides, if you're trying to match an iMac, it isn't hard to top the design. The G5 iMac design is a piece of shit, anything can beat that. Admittedly, it's hard to equal the other hardware designs Apple makes for their computers, but the iMacs blow.
I used to. The nick is derived from my old MSN nick, made in '03 when I got my first real guitar, a Strat which I lovingly keep to this day. I sort of stopped a few years ago, and keep telling myself I need to get back into it, but I never get around to doing so, because I have a frustrating problem: I still remember how to play everything I could before, but my fingers just won't move fast enough. After an hour or so of struggling with that, I usually say "ah, screw it", and put the guitar aside for a while.;)
Well, I think that both parties are politicians, so they're all probably crooks, but that wasn't my point. My point is that not all candidates from one party are created equal, and that what matters is not a person's affiliation, but their policies. Or are you prepared to say a presidency under Ron Paul would be exactly the same as one under McCain?
It's one thing when private businesses are doing it, and another when the government does it. In the former case, it's unreasonable, but regrettably, they have a right to act in an unreasonable way if they choose.. In the latter case, it's unallowable.
...the news that their government can be every bit as clueless and corrupt as our own is a little bit disconcerting. It's "news" that all governments are clueless and corrupt at times? Come on, you can't be that clueless.
...if things got much worse down here (say if another GOP administration was elected)... ...wait, I take that back. Anyone stupid enough to believe that party defines a candidate's worth is stupid enough to believe anything.
I really don't understand why people have a need to eat so much meat. Because we enjoy it. No more, no less. How is that so hard to understand? Surely lots of people like things you don't, and you like things they don't. It's not uncommon, why is it so mystifying when applied to meat?
Terrorist: An agent of a sub-national group who uses premeditated, politically motivated violence against non-combatant targets
I would add "violence" or "physical harm" to that defition. Eh? It's already there.
...state arts ministries... NEVER. The second the government sponsors our entertainment, they can (due to their rights as the source of funding) dictate what entertainment can and can't be made. Fuck. That. Shit.
If you would be using Windows Vista, you would disable UAC too? Any sane, reasonably computer-savvy person would. It doesn't provide a whole lot of security to have to grant permission (as long as you know what you're doing), and it's annoying as hell. I'm a very happy Vista user, but the first thing I did when I installed it was turn UAC off.
pointlessly adversarial lawyer... There's nothing pointless about it. Your whole argument, frankly, is rubbish. When someone is abusing the law and using cheap tactics to get their way, you don't simply roll over and acquiesce to their demands, you FIGHT them, to try to get them to stop. Mr. Beckerman's work is necessary and proper, as he's trying to make sure that the law applies to BOTH sides in this fight, not just one.

You'd be wrong, buddy. It was a big deal several months ago, and slashdot even had a story on it. How did you miss that?

Bullshit. If it costs $0, it's free. End of story.
Yeah, it runs on 90% (hell, I'll be generous to you, 80%) of PCs out there. That's soooooooooo useless.

It would be the best thing ever!
