Introducing Classical Guitar Hero

Alex writes "I've just uploaded the video of a piece of classical electronic music I wrote for 2 Guitar Hero controllers and software (which I created). More information about this piece, its software, and the notation involved in playing it is at alexwroten.com/works.asp and alexwroten.com/excuses.html. I just figured people might be interested in finding new ways to use their Guitar Hero mastery ... especially with the hot debate over whether or not it hinders people's musical instruction."

I play guitar as well, and I'd say that Expert difficulty is sometimes more difficult than actually playing the song on a guitar (depending on how used to chords shapes your fingers are, there's obviously a bit more of a learning curve on a real guitar due to there being 6 strings instead of the one "string" you get on guitar hero :p ). Guitar Hero is good for training your rhythm anyway, I'm a self taught drummer as well as a guitarist and you have to have really good rhythm to get through some of the crazy fast strumming sections without dying for example

I like to keep my rest position of my fingers between the buttons so I have a choice of buttons to hit per finger. Still, you wouldn't want to have to hit all five buttons too frequently, or even four at once. If you want it playable in the game, you'd also have to eliminate the open-strum as a note.

You can get all 12 notes of an octave (sharps and flats) with four buttons without having to hold more than three buttons at once. These could be done in a more chromatic rather than binary arrangement. Your fifth button could be an octave key. Better, if the octave key shifted between the first and fifth fret, the other frets could move accordingly to free up the roles of the first and fifth to alternate between octave-up and octave-down. Special meaning to the other two three-fret combinations and the four-fret could expand the scale further, perhaps enabling major and minor transpositions of key.

I say just use the 3 middle buttons, and map 'em to a diatonic scale. The whammy bar can control your accidentals (or bends even!) and musicians get a more intuitive scale at the expense of a bit of redundancy.

Rather than straight binary representations, there's this neat body of theory about hamiltonian paths on the edges of N-hypercubes. It's all a big pain in the ass to read about, but the gist is that you can enumerate the button positions in an order such that any two adjacent positions differ by only one button.

But this might not be the best plan either. A mapping of buttons to notes could be dictated entirely by adjacency, or it could instead be based around harmonic relationships. Maybe instead of an instrument where it's really intuitive to play a scale, I want an instrument where it's really intuitive to, say, traverse a circle of fifths.

They're performing a concert for the public. It's experimental, yes. It's original, yes. Many people will hate it, yes. But that's NO EXCUSE for not having practiced enough where they didn't play the piece properly. I counted at least five times (over the course of six minutes) where the performers fell out of sync with each other, not in a "post-modern atonal experimental" kind of way, but in a "I-have-no-fucking-clue-how-we're-supposed-to-be-playing-this-section" kind of way.

There are lots of valid reasons to justify this piece being performed, but there are no valid reasons to justify not playing it properly. If the classical guitarist and violinist can't hack it, then find people with less (but not no) classical training and more Guitar Hero training.

As a musician, I can tell you that it takes an enormous amount of time and hard work to master most instruments (some exceptions: cow bell, kazoo, gong). If you are just starting out on an instrument it really isn't fun for most people because you can't play anything you'd want to play and have to do very simple songs and exercises first for hours on end. If it's a woodwind then you'll sound horrible too and make your mouth and/or lips sore or for a guitar your fingers will get sore. The piano is nice at first since you can get nice notes right away, but the difficulty increases to the point that many drop out after a while whereas with easier instruments people drop out due to either the boredom of the songs or the lack of will to master phrasing and technique to be able to play the songs you want.

It seems like the guitar is a good instrument for most people because it has some of the advantages of the piano of not needing a year or two of training to get a nice note out while also not being too complicated since you can (usually) only play one note or chord at a time.

I guess my point is that instruments aren't for most people so it's nice to have something that's a compromise so you learn some simple technique and can play with your friends but it sounds like you have years of training and can play like a pro. Even for musicians it's nice because nobody has the time to learn every instrument so it's nice to be able to play something you have no training for. Not everyone aspires to be a classically-trained, sight-reading musician, y'know. I believe Richard Wright, keyboardist of Pink Floyd, to this day cannot read music. Theres a difference between sight-reading, being able to sight read, understanding music theory without being able to read sheet music, and learning by your ear. Your "argument" is a gross simplification of everything. Firstly, my comment was about people who aspire to learn the instrument and then get distracted, not about people who dont aspire to learn it. Secondly sight reading is the ability to read a piece of transcribed music without ever having read it before. This differs from the ability to be able to read a piece of written music. Having an understanding of scale, chord, modal theory is different from the ability to read music. I may not be able to read sheet music, but if I understand scale, chord and mode theory well, I can get by quite well, because these give you an understanding of what sounds good when and give you the equipment you need to be able to compose your own music WITHOUT having the ability to read sheet music (of course you would need some tabs and a really good sense of timing to get when trying to understand the scale patterns during your lessons). The ability to learn/compose music or recognize scales or chords by ear is also not dependent upon your ability to read sheet music. It is the ability to reproduce a piece of music by listening to it many times over. It requires you to spend countless hours doing ear training exercises if you are not born with a good one - and you dont need to be able to read sheet music for this. Learning songs from tablature gives you no understanding of any music theory whatsoever (which is of paramount importance if you want to get anywhere even more than being able to read sheet music). There are just too many aspiring guitarists who waste their time learning others songs from tabs and not spending time trying to understand what they are playing, or what chord they are fingering, or what scale they are playing and why a particular note fits there. They blindly play what note is written on the tab, and more often than not the quality of tabs is pretty appalling. On your argument about Richard Wright, he may not be able to read sheet music, but if you ask him, he will tell you that he has an understanding of music theory and has an sense of rhythm and a good ear. I can bet my right arm that he will tell you to stay away from tabs because they hamper development.
