I love cheese, but man, the damn cold winters we have here aren't worth it. No amount of cheese will make me feel better when wind chill is -30, and I'm trying to get my car out of a snow drift. Thankfully, I can just move somewhere warmer and get my parents to bring me cheese if they ever visit.

I believe a far better insult to use against me would have been "sand in their vagina" (no, I'm not a chick). ;)

Anyways, it doesn't really make me lose any sleep at night, or rant and rave and foam at the mouth, but it does make me scratch my head and wonder how that got in there. Surely editors should at least make sure the submission is troll/flame free before posting it?

I argue that it's actually impossible to get Windows to run decently no matter how much of a geek you are because the software is written poorly and is designed to annoy the user.

Ah, counterexamples, the one useful function of anecdotal evidence. I run Vista beautifully. It doesn't get in my way, it runs the software I want it to, it just works. So yes, it is possible. Without much effort, either, I might add.

Whoa, there. Why would we want to adopt a pet which loathes our existence no matter how much good we do for it? I mean, come on. That's like having a really cranky girlfriend/wife without the sex! Or a teenager. Neither of which is something you want.

The fact that no one really makes silent movies (except as some sort of deliberate artistic thing) should clue you in on the fact that the methodology was clearly inferior. If it had been worthwhile, we'd still see some decent number of silent movies today. We don't, because that way of making movies sucks.

And, coincidentally, I hated 2001. It's an overly slow, ponderous movie which takes forever to arrive nowhere (or so I'm guessing, I turned it off about halfway through or so). If that's what Wall-E is like, thanks for letting me know I can skip it.

It's probably significantly easier if you were born and raised here, because you get taught the conversions when you're a kid (or at least, I did, and if some kids aren't getting taught the conversions, I have to question the competence of their teachers). 2 cups in a pint, 2 pints in a quart, 4 quarts in a gallon; 16 ounces in a pound; 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, 5280 feet to a mile. It's not a terribly long list, and if you learn those, you should be able to work your way around the imperial system pretty easily. There are other units, but they're not exactly in common use.

I'm sure it's a royal PITA to learn as an adult, though (most things are, compared to learning them when you're young).

I disagree. I thought Cars was either the best of their movies, or second to Finding Nemo. I haven't seen A Bug's Life or Monsters Inc, though, so I'm not sure how one would say it rates compared to those. Definitely better than Toy Story (which was good, mind you, just not their best work), or The Incredibles (which was trash, imnsho).

Somehow, in my life in the US, these matters have never been an issue either... because I have never run into a situation like you describe. Honestly, it sounds extremely artificial to me.

Your analogy is terrible. For me to be doing what you described, I'd have to be going to see the movie because it's Pixar CG goodness, regardless of my hesitations about the plot. My concern is precisely with the "gameplay" here, and you'd better believe that if a game has some gameplay mechanic that looks terrible, I'm very hesitant to waste any money on it before trying a demo or pirated copy.

  19. Re:Blew me away on Wall-E Supervising Animator Tells His Story · · Score: 1

Also, Pixar has gotten so good at what they do that they don't even need words to tell a story. The first 45 minutes of the movie has pretty much ZERO dialogue with the exception of BnL ads for background. Oh, also a word or two (literally) from the robots.

Y'know, I haven't seen the movie, but I really find this to be impossible. Indeed, the lack of dialogue is the single biggest reason I'm not going to see the movie until I, at the very least, pirate it to see if it's any good: stories without dialogue don't work. Period. There's a reason why we quit making silent movies, and it really disappointed me that Pixar is taking a step backward in that regard.

Maybe I'll be surprised, but even without having seen the movie, I'll stake money that it would've been a lot better with dialogue than it is without.

You undermine your entire argument when you quote one portion of my comment out of context. I very clearly explained how the IG investigations serve the same purpose as the telecom suits.

No it doesn't. The telecoms violated the law, and the lives of people. They should face full criminal and civil liability for their actions. Anything less is unacceptable. I mean, you and I don't get to get away with violating the law, why should they?

Now you're resorting to unsupportable accusations and baseless innuendo.

Unsupportable? Baseless? Hardly. Obama said that he supported bringing the telecoms to justice, and then voted for a bill that undermines said justice. In doing so, he proved that his previous promise to his supporters was false, and why? Because it was politically expedient to do so, because he didn't want to be accused of being "soft on terror" or some crap like that. These are the facts, plain and simple, if you wish to avoid looking at them I can't really do anything for you.

It's obvious that you're not equipped for a genuine discussion on this topic, so I'll just leave you with some advice. If want to sway someone to your position based on merit, it helps to have more than a passing familiarity with the issue itself.

That's kind of ironic, considering that your position comes off as being a total apologist for Obama. Maybe this isn't true, but at least as you've come across in your posts, you sound as if any offense is ok, as long as he has some remotely plausible-sounding excuse for it.
