There are legit firmware size limits for some of the older models. I still have a couple that don't support any encryption at all because of that (including that code in the firmware now exceeds the size of the flash). But for the most part yes, they push you into newer models. It's hard to blame them though since there's nothing functionally wrong with TLS 1/1.1 and can be made secure if kept on the internal LAN.
