    Basically, occlusion detection determines whether the pixel/block of pixels currently being rendered will be obscured by some other pixel/block of pixels closer to the viewer

    Thought any decent graphics engine would do that already. If it doesn't then yeah would make things a lot faster!

    Ah but I guess that if it can be done in the hardware then it'll be quicker

    occlusion detection? Is that used for detecting the occult?

    I can see how it might be usefull for games like Quake, Doom etc, but I'm not so sure about GTA etc

    Does this mean mobile phones will get smaller? I have enough problems with the nokia 8310 being to small, any smaller and it starts getting unusable. I'm not old though, or technology challenged, just a average 24 year old who finds 8310s to small!

    On the other hand, if theres less space taken by the electronics then you can have a bigger battery and more talk time.

    I guess even more features are being packed into ever smaller spaces.... is nothing new?

    If you put life critical systems like pacemakers on the internet then you really are asking for trouble. (The only reason I can think of why you would even want to is so that they can be monitored 24/7).

    Even putting more mundane things like (eg) traffice lights on the 'net is questionable... the temptation to hack them would be to great for some people. (Mind you... a little button in my car to change the lightd to green would be cool)

    What I want to know is, why does the plaque showing humanity in all its naked glory have the man waving hello? How are aliens supposed to interpret this? For all we know that could be the intergalactic symbol for 'come and eat my species, we taste really yummy'...

    ISTR reading (being to young to remember...) that there was quite a lot of discussion about that at the time.

    Ofcourse not having a raised hand could also cause offence.

    Yep.

    Maybe if one crashed someone could reverse engineer it... figure out how you can remote control them, and then do a fancy bit of re-programming?

    Could just imagine going to a supermarket and seeting all the animated packagings. I think a lot of people would find it highly confusing/annoying.

    Could be interesting if you're tripped out on drugs or something.

    From a quick read of the article it doesn't like there's any big trust issue here...

    The scientists rechecked there data and retracted there claims... where's the cover up? Isn't that pretty much normal in the scientific community?

    (Ok... maybe they should have check their results before announcing anything, but its not like they denied anything or blatantly lied!)

    Clearly whoever wrote that hasn't read one or either of those books.

    Um, not read Good Omens yet but have read HHG.

    I wasn't aware that Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters had been made into films. I was kind of hoping for a live action film however!

    Hmm, according to amazon Good Omens is a direct desendant of Hitchhikers guide... now when is that movie ever gonna get finished?!

    Either way its good to see a Terry Pratchett book being made into a film, hopefully it'll get some Discworld books made into films too.
    I imagine that'd be pretty cool if you combined it with LoTR style effects and cinematography.

    As for this battery in the article, I hope that they modify it to allow the user to adapt it to any piece of electronic [laptops, flashlights, gameboys, alarm clocks, etc.]

    It is a well-known property of silicon that light of different colors is absorbed at different depths in the silicon; blue light is absorbed near the surface, green light is absorbed farther down and red light is absorbed even deeper

    Why couldn't this have been done before? Whats been the break through that has enabled this new development?

    Or is it a case of no-one thinking of it before?

    What's next, will we see newspapers reporting that all email servers are vulnerable to "hacking" because they can be logged into via telnet?

    Same applies to web servers, although I'm sure MS will issue a patch to prevent people accessing port 80...

    The article says 'software companies', besides you pay for commercial software and its reasonable to expect it to be installed in a way that doesn't expose your computer to any form of attack.

    With open source you didn't pay and its a matter of trust between the user and developer that the program is secure... and if you're really worried about it you have access to the source.

    If this were done in the auto industry

    If this were the auto industry, then you would have to pay for any updates that weren't critical to the computers safety.

    And if MS made cars then your fuel economy would be shot because of all the extra 'features'
