  1. Gutsy: not for n00bs - yet. on Vista Vs. Gutsy Gibbon · · Score: 1

I'm uber keen to move to linux, and so I tried both flavours of gutsy (32 and 64). Being a *nix n00b, I found quite a few unacceptable hurdles imo. * The installer hangs when 'updating sources'. wtf? * No soundblaster x-fi support. * Flash plugin 'quirks' .. both adobe and gnash, 32 and 64 had some kind of compatibility problems. * ATI video card support lacking. Long story short, Vista still pwns for hardware/software support and simple out-of-the-box ease of use. Let's put it another way - if you have to open a shell/compiler - Gutsy isn't even close to Vista.

Aren't all requests for a date unsolicited? Oh it's hard to be humble.

Unfortunately, you may find that 'format shifting' is illegal in your state / territory. A lot of the "backup" rules changed when they revised the DCMA.

Is it just me or does this move from Microsoft seem rather desperate?
I don't think it's so much as desperate as necessary for Microsoft.

With things like compix/beryl and wine/cedega available now, XP isn't so necessary anymore..

MS's dominance begins in its software base, more so: Games/Multimedia and the whole 'WOW' thing is in essence at the core of what Vista and MS's whole 'digital home' direction. To clarify, not the flashy gfx, but the gui itself, the GDI. With DirectX 10 the whole ball game from the kernel up has changed.

MS needs everyone to get on board with DX10 etc. so they can push forward (developers developers developers!) with their exclusive New Technologies and maintain their proprietary/exclusive dominance. The last thing MS needs is everyone to get comfortable with XP (or its' compatible alternatives) ;)
  5. ahhh Linux. on How Do You Advocate Linux in 5 Minutes? · · Score: 1

Face it Linux zealots, Microsoft has the eye candy and you don't. I mean, look at Vista - "Wow" - kinda says it all huh? Millions of people are rushing out to replace their whole OS on the simple premise that the blue windows they use now will become transparent and can be shuffled like a rolodex. Don't get me wrong, i'm not encouraging you to get Vista .. and you all know why .. but Linux is not "cool" - where's the games? where's the music? where's the movie-making photo-sharing super-happy-fun-time experience the big commercial vendors are offering? I'll tell you where, not on Linux. When Linux becomes "fun" the monkey boy will sing.
