I actually knew a girl in HS who came from a very traditional Mexican family, as a result, she had 7 middle names.
Here's the thing, in California, in order to be issued a driver's license, your full name had to appear on the card, and there was insufficient space for all of her middle names, as a result, in order to get a driver's license, she had to have her name legally changed.
Here's the thing that people always seem to forget, ads and spam WORK.
I you really hate ads, then make sure that you never click though, (Ditto for spam, of course), and you never buy any product that advertises to you irl, and make sure no one you know does either, and once the ads and the spam are unprofitable, then people will stop paying to put them out there.
I used to work in a CNC shop that ran CO2 lasers to do 2 dimensional cutting of sheet metal. We had two machines, one was about 2kW, the other was 3.6kW. One of my co-workers (and friend [and dumbass]), accidentally put his thumb a couple of inches under the focal point while the beam was running, and it cooked the flesh, but there was no hole. (I can't remember off hand which of the machines it was, I'm tempted to say it was the 3.6kW, but I could be wrong.)
I'd just like to note, that I have a 3G connection that I use as my primary means of access, and for the life of me, I couldn't use that much bandwidth, it's just not fast enough.
The most I've ever managed to use was about 30G, and that was when I was DLing (and ULing, which counts towards my cap), pretty much constantly the entire month.
I think smoking should be banned country-wide because it makes my wife sick just to have the windows down in-town because of all the other drivers who are smoking.
Tell her to start smoking, if she develops a 5 cigarette a day habit, the smell of others smoking won't bother her at all! (Well, it might make her want a cigarette.)
Such a simple solution, I bet you're wondering why you didn't think of it yourself, no?
A person's conduct is born of their beliefs. there is no conduct you engage in that you don't do so because of some belief or another.
If you don't speed, it's because you believe that the highway engineers and/or politicians who established the speed limit on that section of road knew what they were talking about, and/or you think you'll get a ticket if you do so. If you do speed, it's because you believe pretty much the opposite.
Do you walk around in society bare-ass nekkid? If so, you do so out of a belief in some sort of modesty (or, potentially punishment, as a above.). If you do, it's because you believe that this is the natural state of humanity.
People in withdrawal who scratch the hell out of themselves, so the point that the injuries require hospitalization do so because they believe that there are bugs crawling all over them.
You clearly post to/., why? do you believe that what you have to say is interesting, valuable and/or funny? Do you believe that it will pass a few hours?
(Note: I'm well aware that I'm generalizing in the specifics here, but I believe that this in no way interferes with the fundamental truth of the overall point.)
The belief that a face should be covered is no more absurd than any number of other beliefs.
Just off the top of my intoxicated head, the belief that on Ash Wendsday, people should go around with a smudge on their forheads to demonstrate their belief (not to mention the whole lent thing), Kosher food and the belief that cows are sacred.
If you go ahead with the idea that people that hold beliefs contrary to your own are wrong, just because those beliefs are absurd, you've forfeited your own right to hold any beliefs that aren't agreed upon by the majorityof your culture.
Quick, how do you feel about abortion, the death penalty and gay marriage? Odds are good you disagree with the cultural majority on one of those subjects. Thus, by your own argument, you have no right to hold that belief, conform, immediately!
Inherit to the belief that you have the right to believe whatever the fuck you want is the belief that other people have the same right. If you disagree, then get then by all means be intolerant (see, I do believe you're entitled to believe whatever you want.), but don't be surprised when you are attacked next for failing to conform to a cultural norm.
What else should we do? All I see for it is to accept the risk an move on.
Don't get me wrong, there have been more than a few nice saves by real security, and I expect that as the technology progresses, they'll get better, but on the scale of risks including airplane hijacking or terrorism, I take a much larger personal risk every time I drink the water around here, let alone drive somewhere.
You can't make life safe. Not from accidents and certainly not from the deliberate acts of other people. If you can't accept that, then you might as well euthanize yourself, because you'll spend every waking moment in fear of what could be.
I often promise myself that were I to receive again mod points, I would apply them with great fervor to the places they are deserved, this comment exemplifies that notion.
While I await that happy circumstance, I content myself to combat ignorance as I am best able. It doesn't actually improve things around here, but it makes me feel better.
You sir, have made a point better than I could ever hope to, I commend you.
Truth be told, even if I were not to write you off as a crazy conspiracy theorist and instead were to take your words as being utterly honest and upfront, there's not a damn thing I can do about it, so I'm happier disregarding such threats.
I would like to personally applaud you, since you are a better biker than virtually all the ones here in Boston. Our bikers pay no to stop signs or red lights, swerve between lanes, cut cars off, dodge back and forth from the sidewalks and generally make an unsafe nuisance of themselves.
Yeah, well, so do the cars.
Don't get me wrong, I think driving in Boston is great fun, a sort of vehicular brawl (which, when one is driving an ambulance, you almost always win, particularly in Boston), but let's not have a double standard here, eh?
PS: for those of you not familiar with driving in Boston, a while ago the city decided that there was a problem with people failing to yield for emergency vehicles who were running lights and sirens, so they changed the law such that if you fail to yield for a vehicle running code 3, the emergency vehicle has the right to push you out of the way, and not only are they not liable for any damage you incur, you are liable for any damage they incur. Apparently, it took a while, but people started pulling the fuck over.
Which inductive sensors suck hard for cyclists. I frequently go grocery shopping early in the morning or late at night when there's practically no traffic -- wanna make a left turn? Your choice: sit there for upwards of 5 minutes waiting for a cager to come trip the light (and then they have to wait for you to get through the intersection, a delay I'm sure they appreciate), or disregard the signal.
Since I used to routinely have to drive off-road for work, I used to drive a jeep that was lifted and on over sized tires, which in fact lifted my Jeep so high that I could no longer trigger inductive sensors. Generally not a problem, since this was in California (And you can bet I took shit over driving a gas guzzler.), I'd almost never have to wait more than 20 seconds for someone else to trigger the lights.
That is, of course, until I got a new job and drove home every morning at 4AM, and had to cross an intersection that was always green for the perpendicular direction of travel until a signal was detected on the loop.
The first couple of nights I just stopped, made sure it was clear, then ran the red. Then I hit upon a brilliant idea. Every night thereafter, I would drive up to the intersection, put my Jeep in neutral, get out, walk over, hit the crosswalk button, then walk back to my car. I had it timed so I would re-buckle my seat-belt just as the light turned green.
If you were looking for a redeeming message here, I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed, I was really just telling an amusing anecdote.
Playing your iTunes purchased music is (typically) more effort on non-apple smartphones and may even be impossible on some.
You know, I've seen people comment on this, and I'm personally surprised I've never seen someone comment on the readily apparent link.
People get locked in to apple products because of their investment in iTunes purchases. Why are they locked in? Because Apple uses DRM! Why do they use DRM? Because the RIAA (et al) insisted!
Thus either Apple is the patsy of the RAAI (et al) or the RIAA (et al) is the patsy of Apple! Or \more likely, both are patsies of the Freemasons, or maybe the Illuminati.
It's beautiful! It's elegant! It's irrefutable!
Well, maybe it's just a rum-fueled flight of fancy, at any rate, I'm pretty sure Jobs was on the grassy knoll...or do I mean Ballmer?
Leonid Mulyanchik has been into it for years since before the Berlin Wall fell, since before the first Macintosh
I didn't realize that the Macintosh was as significant an historical milestone as the fall of the Berlin Wall.
It really speaks to how materialistic a society we've become that we define events by the advent of a some product.
I think you're missing the point. It's not about the significance of the event, it's about how well known the date of the event is.
Quick, when was the first Mac introduced? When did the Berlin wall fall? You probably know those off the top of your head, don't you? Year, if not month and day.
On the flip side, When was Agincourt? Or the Gulf of Tonkin incident?
This attitude utterly disgusts me. You people are pathetic. "Not drawing pictures of Mohammed" (PBUH) takes away precisely one "right" of yours, the right to be an idiot with no sense of tact or respect.
...
I'm a British atheist. What say I go to Alabama, defecate on a bible, wrap it in the US flag and burn the bundle. That's free speech isn't it? That's me exercising the right of a person living in the US isn't it?
No, it's me being an offensive dick for the sake of it. I'd get lynched, and rightly so. Grow up, the lot of you.
Two points:
First, the defense of rights, particularly free speech, must be vigorous, it's a tremendously slippery slope, but moreover, there is a great reason why people should draw Mohammad, it's a group of people expressing their displeasure with something, in a manner which draws a great deal of attention to itself without causing any direct harm. How is this a bad thing? As a nation, the US is big on protests, we find they work rather well. Would you suggest that certain things shouldn't be protested? If so, where do we draw the line? Freedom of speech means that you are not only free to hold whatever opinions you want, but you are free to express them. How is this a bad thing?
Second, go right ahead. Now, you may or may not get lynched, but if you made it out alive, and someone sued you over it, or you were arrested for it, the government would land squarely on your side. That is in fact an expression of free speech. More over, if you did it where I grew up in California, you wouldn't even be beat up, lynched or arrested for it. You still might get sued, but the odds are against it being by a Californian.
PS. when you looking for a highly conservative and reactionary state, it's more common to call out Mississippi.
Are you saying that Utah a Mormon controlled state is currently being run by uncouth primitives?
Well, I wouldn't say uncouth, since as a rule Mormons are exceedingly polite, but otherwise, sure, why not?
Why is it assumed that just because I loathe certain practices of other countries and cultures, I must love all practices of my own? For the record, I don't like Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah's witnesses, Scientologists, Catholics, Muslims, Judiasm, and oh, well, pretty much most religions (Oh, let's not forget the People's Temple). It's not that I find the concept of religion disquieting, it's that I find religions (or more accurately, sects of religions) that seek to force it's adherents to live carefully proscribed lifestyles abhorrent.
Now, I know the arguments, that people aren't forced to stay in the religions (mostly true, and certainly some do.), that they lead the lifestyles in order to get into heaven etc etc. Problem is though, that if you raise a child, and you, and a large part of the community around you, teach them their entire lives that playing a bongo drum is tantamount to murder, ods are quite good, they'll never play a bongo drum. To put is succinctly, indoctrination.
To me, that style of religion is infringing on one of the few things I believe to be a basic human right, self-determination.
If anyone has bothered to read this far, I'll note explicitly that with the exception of the People's Temple and to a lesser extent, scientology, I have no problems whatsoever with people who subscribe to a sect of a religion wherein what is preached is harmony, love and peace, being a generally good person and you'll be rewarded etc. (And yes, I realize that this is a inconsistency with my earlier statement of self-determination, so sue me.).
Quite extensive, so I'll just pull a paragraph for you:
Within Japan itself, the dramatic increase in available pornography and sexually explicit materials is apparent to even a casual observer. This is concomitant with a general liberalization of restrictions on other sexual outlets as well. Also readily apparent from the information presented is that, over this period of change, sex crimes in every category, from rape to public indecency, sexual offenses from both ends of the criminal spectrum, significantly decreased in incidence.
Now obviously, this discussion is solely of Japan, which has a number of other factors going on that should be considered before trying to extrapolate, but frankly, I don't care about and am too lazy to look for any more data. If you're really interested, this study cites a few other studies which apparently had similar results.
FYI California practically uses Mao's little red book as a straight social studies text and treats Marx as insightful and historically correct in his predictions.
Hi, speaking as a graduate California public education (In the San Francisco Bay Area, no less.), I'd like to say that you're full of shit.
As it happens, I've read the little red book, and a good chunk of Marx's writings, but it had nothing to do with school, my schoolin' basically just noted that such things existed, gave a brief overview of what they were about and discussed their impact on the world.
No, I read them on my own time, of my own volition because it's important to read them, to understand what they were saying, what they were trying to do, and to understand why it wouldn't work. I believe the ideal socialist utopia that is promoted would be a really nice place to live, the problem of course comes about for implementation, the thing's got to be run by people, and we suck at that sort of thing.
I think that your point is, while not completely without merit, a vast generalization.
As a result of many factors, I have an extraordinarily large vocabulary. It would not be hubris for me to claim to easily be in at least the 95th percentile of English speakers in terms of vocabulary. I know and love the English language, to the point that I'm somewhat frequently accused of using my word choices as a weapon to make other people feel dumb. (Which incidentally, is not correct, I use the words because I think they deserve to be used, and that the nuances they provide enhance my points.)
Having said that, though, I swear like a pirate.
It has nothing at all to do with my vocabulary. It's purely about me. As a few studies have shown, swear has a biological effect. In my case, it almost always serves as a mechanism for stress relief, which is something I find myself in need of almost any time I'm talking to people. (I know you'll need a moment to absorb that, a/.er with agoraphobia...).
Here's the real kicker, and this is something many people have a great deal of difficulty in believing, I don't want to offend you, but more over, I really don't care whether or not you're offended. There are exceedingly few people that I care about enough that such things even appear on my radar.
For the record, I pondered filling this post with fifty-cent words (or sesquipedalians), to help prove my point, but I decided that there is a limit to how pedantic even I can be.
Just gonna go ahead an point this out, 250k, invested reasonably well is plenty to live quite nicely on down here in Honduras, I myself manage to live reasonably well on around 800-1k/month, and incidentally, I live in one of the more expensive parts of Honduras.
If you take the time to sell off your real property, and if that just covers the cost of buying a house (around here, that'll cost somewhere between 15k and 1M [told you this was an expensive area]), you'll be doing even better.
Oh, and you can almost certainly parlay your investment return into a residency.
I know this is crazy talk for/., but perhaps you should familiarize yourself with reality before posting?
I'm really not sure whether this makes a difference or not, but in the best traditions of/. I figured I'd nit pick and quibble over unimportant things.
I'm going to go ahead and join the folks saying you can't do all this from one app, but, for what it's worth, here are my suggestions for how to achieve your goal for free/cheap:
Hardware Monitoring: First, I'd tend to say that you don't really need this, but if you want it: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php Speedfan's probably your best bet, yo can configure it to send you an e-mail for events, and it also does pretty good logging and, as an added bonus, it has decent hardware compatibility. The other player is MotherBoardMonitor, but it's basically abandonware now, afaik.
For internet filtering: There's peer guardian (http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/) or, as someone else suggested just use openDNS, the advantage of openDNS is it's very easy, the advantage to PeerGuardian is you can create exceptions.
For internet access: For this, go with almost any modern router, I personally use a WRT54g loaded with DD-WRT, I know I can force it to allow/disallow any given MAC.
For anti-virus: Pretty much any AV out there will let you schedule runs.
For setting hours the computer can be used: easiest way would be to find a computer who's BIOS lets you do that, disadvantage is that you'd need to be physically present to make an exception, or give the child the BIOS password and then change it when you got home. Other disadvantage is that it'd be some finicky research, since not all BIOSes will let you, and you'll have to find out before you buy the machines.
As far as monitoring computer status goes, I'd just install a VNC server on them (http://www.realvnc.com/) if you can't log in, the computer is asleep or off (does it really matter which?) if you can, then the computer is on, and you can see what the kid is doing.
I know this isn't really what you asked for, but afaik there's no one app to do all you want.
Why is it that every time a cop misbehaves and gets called out for it, other cops crawl out of the woodwork and start defending his actions? Do you think that carrying a star makes you immune to laws? Are you one of those policemen who help corrupt cops who conduct crimes avoid justice?
Having a stressful job means you deserve sympathy, but it does not mean you get to abuse your power.
There are a lot of ways of dealing with that stress.
Yes, there is, and some of them are acceptable and some are unacceptable. This was unacceptable.
So, before you judge, just consider what it's be like to respond to a "Traffic Accident" and find that.
And before defending these officers, just consider what it's be like to find that pictures of your daughter's dead corpse have become online showpieces and find that.
Or are you already past the point where only other cops are real humans who's needs, feelings and rights need to be considered?
First: I'm not a cop, never been one, don't really want to be one. You wanna know why? Because of all the people in Emergency Services, they work the hardest and face the worst public opinion. It's easy to vilify cops, they do lots of things that people don't agree with. They apply laws to everyone that you think don't really apply to you. I'm too lazy to face that kind of opposition to do good. I'll stick to my home in EMS, where I may work my ass off, nut I'm just be faced with indifference, not hatred (as opposed to firefighters who do nothing and are universally adored.)
Look, as I've previously stated, I don't actually agree with passing the pictures around. I think it was a stupid thing to do, but I don't think it was an immature thing to do, it was a rational thing to do, once you understand the rationale. Dumb, but rational.
There are relatively few people who, despite the fact that they see on a regular basis the worst that people do to each other, get out of bed each day and go out to help everyone, not just the people you agree with, but also the people you despise, simply because they are people.
Speaking as a member of that fraternity, you're damn straight I will speak up in the defense of my brothers (and sisters). I don't support the illegal, and I will join you in railing against it, and I don't even support the dumb, and I will gladly chastise it.
As much as I don't support either of those, I won't stand idly by whilst someone who had no concept of the stresses condemns, blithely assuming that they know better.
Never assume that someone who does this sort of thing doesn't care about their "clients" (for lack of a more encompassing term) as human. If we weren't more aware of the humanity of each and every person in the world than most, we'd go find a job that pays better and demands less.

I'm sorry, I rambled a bit there, didn't I?
I'm not saying this is the case but it is possible. Anyone have research data either for or against this hypothesis?
Here you go.

Erm, yeah, sorry, just because there's a limit to how pedantic I can be, doesn't mean it isn't rather high.
I think that your point is, while not completely without merit, a vast generalization.
/.er with agoraphobia...).
(I know you'll need a moment to absorb that, a
Here's the real kicker, and this is something many people have a great deal of difficulty in believing, I don't want to offend you, but more over, I really don't care whether or not you're offended.
/., but perhaps you should familiarize yourself with reality before posting?
If you take the time to sell off your real property, and if that just covers the cost of buying a house (around here, that'll cost somewhere between 15k and 1M [told you this was an expensive area]), you'll be doing even better.
Oh, and you can almost certainly parlay your investment return into a residency.
I know this is crazy talk for
Actually, speaking as an anglophone who lives in Honduras and uses a vanilla copy of FF, when I use the search bar, for, say, "neener, you're wrong", the page that loads is http://www.google.hn/search?q=neener%2C+neener%2C+you're+wrong&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a ...note the .hn. What infact happens is FF loads the .com, then google redirects me to the .hn
/. I figured I'd nit pick and quibble over unimportant things.
I'm really not sure whether this makes a difference or not, but in the best traditions of
I'm going to go ahead and join the folks saying you can't do all this from one app, but, for what it's worth, here are my suggestions for how to achieve your goal for free/cheap:
Yes, there is, and some of them are acceptable and some are unacceptable. This was unacceptable.
