Exactly. Remember playing with you first RC car? It got stuck on all sorts of things and flipped over and got stuck upside down.

Then they came up with those dual track-driven machines that didn't even have servos, just cheap DC motors. Not only did they do all steering via the "tank-treads", but by designing the body to fit between the belt/track/treads, the designers ensured the machine could be flipped completely over without getting stuck. Not to mention that it navigate terrain much more treacherous than a wheeled RC car.

Actually, many vehicles that navigate extreme terrain or that are required to have extreme durability or strength use tracks.

This reminds me that our hilariously 6-wheeled mars rover can't even navigate a loose 25 degree slope.. heh.. even jeeps can do that!

First, it's pretty sad when the NYT scoops slashdot on a major piece of linux news like this.

Slashdot is a blog. The meaning of the word blog defines how slashdot operates: slashdot links to (mainly user submitted) news stories and webpages.
Therefore, it is the nature of a blog to always be "scooped".

Furthermore, slashdot is a bunch of geeks and nerds getting together on the internet... there is not much sadder than that to any "normal" people although I'll be the first to admit journalists may not fit that definition.

Does this sound like an ad yet? The reception is perfectly clear - even three stories away through brick and steel - in my experience. Although this seems like a great idea, most solar panels on earth can only extract 3 to 5 percent of the sun's energy per meter squared. Furthermore, it takes a huge amount of electrical power to actually get the silicon to form in those nice crystals in the first place. Thus, most solar panels in use right now are "catching up" on repaying all that energy dumped to make them.

Luckily for us, some people are working on making amorphous silicon crystals which don't have the big power requirement to make, instead they use really nasty chemicals (oh well, gotta try something) to produce the amorphous silicon.
Also, I was wondering what would happen if the laser "missed" and took out, say, Redmond, Washington? Is putting a huge laser in orbit something we really want to do? Just think of the Alan Parson's Project ... (i mean dr. evil's laser...)

Good point. You must consider those who are actually designing the ads, and who they are employed by. It seems that banner ads are designed merely to trick the surfer into clicking them, rather than tempting the surfer with interesting/useful stuff. That is, ad designers are herding clicks, rather than sales. This is not beneficial to anyone, except the person making the ad (merely because they get paid).

This is hardly surprising, considering that "front page" and "front page express" and other such mindless graphical code slaughtering programs are so common. What I'm trying to get at here is that bad banner ad design roughly correlates with bad HTML (or what have you) design: there are few webpages with intelligent features, good layout and easy navigation, however, there are at least a billion other pages that are horrible in one or more ways.

Thus, to single out banner ads is like saying "wow.. the headlights on this pinto really suck", when you should be saying "wow.. this whole car really sucks!"

yeah, just like Jaron Lanier says: people are finding out that people can't write code well in general. I suppose, in several years, in a history book someplace it will say: "Thus, the computer age served a purpose: to highlight for humans how incredibly stupid/blind they really are."

furthermore, the article reeks of zealotry (which i was hoping that the widespread study of science would help end >:-) and seems to be written in a manner meant specifically to inflame the passions of theists/creationists/whoever.

besides, to anyone who has learned pretty much any biology within the last few years already knew that evolution does in fact occur, and you can measure it just like anything else. Whether life originated in a primordial soup or on an asteroid or whatever is completely unknown, it could have happened through any or all of these multitudinously varied creation theories... but who cares??? You can't do anything with that information other than laugh at whoever ends up being wrong about their creation theory (which is probably all of us) be it supernatural or chemical. this said, go do something useful!
