Well.... I don't think the new layout's totally heinous, but I do take issue with some of the recent Facebook changes and other design elements. First and Worst: News Feed versus Live Feed... Ugh! We already had tools to hide anything we didn't want to see; Facebook's not at all disguised plan to reduce system load by limiting the amount of data to render by default sucks. .. there is literally no benefit and it requires additional steps to work around it. And it guesses badly "what I want to see". It also bothers me that when you back out of a page, say a photo album or someone's profile, you then return to the top of your prior page, not the actual location you jumped actually jumped off from... makes it a pain when you are going through "Older Posts" to catch up on a couple days' updates. Older Posts is buggy too, often slow and sometimes causes FB to freeze up. In general, though FB is remarkably fast for its dynamic nature, features, and bazillion active users, it is noticeably slower than it used to be.

Good, noble, respectable, wonderfully humane and giving... yes. Absolutely yes. No question about it. But as far as I'm concerned, it's a pity and a disappointment that the Gates Foundation does not support causes related to environmental protection, endangered species, animal welfare and biodiversity. Flora, fauna, ecosystems... they can't protect themselves from us. We have all the weaponry and entitlement. Protecting these in substantial ways could make a much more important multi-generational contribution

"Wireless carriers will still have the ability to use contracts for subsidizing phone purchases" Perhaps, but I don't see the slightest attempt to validate your assumption with math. Do you know how long it currently takes the carriers to recoup equipment subsidies and turn profits on a per subscriber basis? The real cost of equipment subsidies? Profit per wireless subscriber? Cost of supporting a single subscriber per month (based on cost of goods sold, sales commissions, customer care, billing, network utilization, and so on?) The ratio of revenue to profit? The amount of profit used for capital expenditures such as network improvements? How much these costs would be reduced by your plan? In the absence of that, it sounds like a nice idea, but ...

  10. How we do on Do Retailers Often Screen User Reviews? · · Score: 0

Our site is fairly "big" in terms of UVs, visits, etc., generating over two billion dollars per year in revenue. When we implemented ratings/reviews a couple of years ago, our requirements included the ability to approve or reject any posting prior to publishing it, but we never modify anythingï. Nor do we specifically reject negative product reviews. What we do, and I'm sure this is common among major 'e'tailers (sorry for the 'e' cheese there), is reject any posting that contains profanity or vulgarity. Colorful commentary about our company specifically, or our site, rarely makes the cut. We essentially limit the feedback we publish to the products we sell.

  13. Re:I'm wondering if it's intentional on iPhone Root Password Hacked in Three Days · · Score: 1

Actually, AT&T and Apple jointly "control" the iPhone activation process. Activation may be *initiated* within the iTunes UI, but the backend APIs absolutely touch AT&T systems. How else would the device operate on the AT&T network? How would monthly invoices get generated?

Besides, do you really believe that AT&T's legal team would overlook such a gaping hole in the contract that would leave them unprotected from such a scheme? Finally, remember that Apple has a vested interest in an exclusive partnership for iPhone: it was Apple who first pitched the deal to Verizon (who passed), then to Cingular, which has since become AT&T.

    In summary, No way Jose.
