I don't believe that it's macs are over priced, it much rather they are priced right for there bracket. You can buy a mac for $2000 and get a really powerful machine, or you can buy a PC for $600 and get an average machine. if you want to plunk down $2000, you know your getting a high end machine.
It's The same reason people don't switch to Mac or linux, because there standard code will not work on something new. almost all popular software is written for the x86 arch, so if we upgrade, to say PPC, all the devs are going to have to rewrite there code, etc.
Use IT guys have the knowledge to see the some OSS software is better then commercial software, but the problem is the most of the company bigwigs think that because you pay, it is better. You have to show and demonstrate to them that the OSS alternative is just as good, and let them know that it is 100% free. Most companies pay for Solaris, Windows, or variants of *nix because it is slightly less buggy they OSS software, which is what most non-tech people what.
Will they start also catering some of there hardware on their computer for linux? I've never owned a dell, but I know one of the main problems with the linux up-rise is that there always seems to be one or two hardware pieces that does not work with linux. I also wonder what Distro they will choose. The natural contenders are Fedora and Ubuntu(FTW). I think it's good though that they would all linux to come preinstalled, will save the newbies a lot of trouble with problem installations, etc.
I've Done This. My School Had a filter system, so I setup a simple Cgi-proxy on a spare box I had at home. When The School blocked my site, I just changed it. They never commented on it to me, even though everyone knew it was my site. I think that the moral implications do not lie with you, but rather with the users. You can setup a simple htaccess file so that only you know who is using the site. This way if Pornographic material is accessed, you can tell who is it and cut off their access.
It is not *that* big a problem for most people, your average home user. For locations like where I work, our login auth system is time-based, so if the computer is readying 9AM and our clocks are reading 10AM, then it's a problem. For the most part, I would hope that most bank and transportation systems would have this worked out already.
How much will this be a month? The standard $15?
I don't know... I think the problem is this might ruin the LoTR name or story line.
With WoW, the warcraft story was bore from a videogame, so the creators at Blizzard were able to make up a lot of lore
and the story line, adding in what they needed to so the story would work. With LoTR, it's already build on a foundation
by the books, so it should have to follow that, while attempting not to mess with the "Tolkin" Universe.
I have yet to See any screen shots or commentary, in fact I just learned that this game existed... lol.
I think it may be a little too late to be trying to break into the MMORPG catagory, but if they can provide solid game
play and will allow a good gap between the 20/7 people and the week end players they may just be able to equal other MMO's.
