WinDSL Coming?

regardless, that isn't motorola's problem. DSL is competing with cable internet access. There's no reason why they shouldn't try to make a low cost solution for those markets that demand them. God forbid we would have choices or flexibility.
Yes, but a phone line allows them to do it now. How would TiVo go about getting broadcasters and/or cable companies to make it easier for them to help consumers skip commercials?
"Our cars already contain a huge amount of electronic circuitry, but it is all outside the actual engine. Why start putting electronics inside our engines when the mechanical process in use now works so well. "
When was the last time you had a problem with any of those electronic circuits crashing? Mechanical systems fail, electronic ones can too. Your car isn't going to get a BSOD. Embedded microcontrollers are everywhere. Do you fly in planes that are controlled by mechanical systems or electronic ones? Embedded microcontrollers are here to stay.
I guess this just goes to show that rarely is a person really good or evil, just a human being. I dislike Bill Gates, but not really on a personal level. I dislike the power he wields over the computer industry. I can respect the fact that he made some very good (some what lucky?) business decisions early on in his career to become successful. What I don't respect is the way his corporation has acted nor do I respect many of the crappy products it has released.
But it is nice to see him give back some money. It would be even nicer to see him take a break from his quest to rule the world and personally donated time to a cause. For all we know some PR person that makes 6 figures a year cuts the checks for publice relations purposes.
I didn't write the AC post earlier, but since you completely ignored what they wrote, I'll quote it again for you:
"current everquest users. the users who dont mind having their hard drives being raped. the people who care about their privacy left already."
Try reading the post next time before getting all indignant. He was simply stating that USERS who cared about privacy had left already. I'd say that was a pretty valid argument, wouldn't you?
I think they just said they were done with the weird translations for the day. I have to admit, despite my better judgement, I fell for this one for a second.
Yes, thank you. I was thinking the exact same thing. What the hell are all these people complaining about? Why can't slashdot have a revision control system?
Logged in users post at one by default, and can go up to two points or down to zero points, depending on how moderators judge their posts.
The purpose of moderation is to increase the signal to noise ratio, without resorting to censorship
That is only my opinion and it may not be shared by all users or the owners of Slashdot. Moderation is needed because Slashdot has become very popular. People act differently here at Slashdot than they used to. When I lurked here (before I had a user account), I was intimidated to post because there were some very well thought out and informed posts here. The readership was smaller and the dynamics were different. IMO, there was an effect almost similar to peer pressure that made slashdot self-moderating without any kind of moderation system in place.
I wonder if all (or most of) the people who troll Slashdot are really just old-timers who don't like the fact that Slashdot is mainstream now.
It's not a mandatory recall. nothing in the article says that you have to take it back.
"PlayStation2: SCEI has been forced to recall the start-up software which accompanied the 1.25 million PlayStation2 units shipped to date, in order to combat a bug that allows the Japanese consoles to play foreign DVDs. "
"Gamers can return their illegitimate software wither via mail from April 1, or through 8,000 Seven-Eleven stores soon. PlayStation2 will now ship in Japan with software that does not support the playing of foreign DVDs. "
I would think that someone would be smart enough to find another reason to recall the units. Who wants to part with their playstation 2 so they can lose the ability to play dvd discs they weren't "allowed" to play before.
The article said very clearly that they could use the connection. They were basically just using it in a way different than the university intended. It could be the case that there are good reasons to not let students run their on cable to connect up their rooms. Why didn't the university just handle it themselves? no reason to call the cops and arrest the kids.
All these people bitching about them not paying 24 dollars extra for a *semester*. I've lived at the dorms here at Purdue. I'm an in state student and Purdue is reasonably priced for in state students. I paid over $2000 a semester for room and board.
I refuse to accept the explanation that they went to all this trouble to lower their room and board costs by 48 bucks, when they were already paying thousands. 48 bucks for 8-9 months of internet access? My bet would be they couldn't get into the dorm of their choice.
I'm sure the tests will not be written the same. I've taken open book tests that were damn hard. Sure we had all the information available to us. Right there in the book. If you didn't know it before hand, you could not do well.
Basically the time limit is what makes the difference. Everyone could do well in an open book, open-internet style of exam with unlimited time. When time is limited, you don't have time to look up more than a couple details.
What took you all so long ? SMP on a single chip is an obvious advance.
Memory bandwidth is a problem in all SMP systems AFAIK. Maybe what they were waiting for wasn't the capability to put two or more chip cores on a chip. Maybe it was multiple cores + on die L2 cache to alleviate the memory bottleneck problems.
CSS doesn't seem to me to be a very good measure of copy protection. However, CSS does protect against copying DVDs on consumer level hardware. Everyone wants to rail on them because it doesn't protect against all forms of copying.
The claims about wanting control over playback have some truth to them (at least some truth, maybe more). My problem is with the "standard" response on Slashdot: CSS does not prevent copying, it only gives them control over playback. This just isn't true, it does both.
The locks on my doors prevent casual entry to my house. Will they prevent all entry? Will they stop the most determined thief? No. I would argue that they are effective. They are _enough_ of a deterrant. They make entering my house more difficult.
Nothing is perfect. CSS is a copy-protection scheme. It protects against casual copying and passing DVDs back and forth at the office. It is no one's god given right to be able to distribute their favorite movies for 5 bucks to their neighbors.
Many of the people on Slashdot look like they are full of shit when it comes to complaining about CSS because, guess what?, they are the very people that would have a more difficult time copying DVD's because of CSS. If the mpaa would get smart, they would release binaries for linux that could be used for playback on linux, or find some other way to support playback in linux.
Not only do you need a "truly blank dvd", you also need special hardware to write to the "truly blank dvd". Or at least that is how I understand the situation, I could be mistaken. While CSS does not stop copying on all levels, it does prevent me from running off a copy of my favorite movie to my neighbor for the cost of blank media.
I disagree with the common notion on Slashdot that just because CSS doesn't prevent all copying, it is worthless as a copy protection. If we could all burn DVD's for a buck or two like CDR, the movie studio would lose a lot of money from decreased sales.
Let's not kid ourselves. This doesn't mean that I like the mpaa or their methods, but some of the claims here are a little over the top, imo.
I just checked the website, aft.org. The average teacher's salary is $39,347 according to this chart. Are you talking about Quake 3 or the first one? My roommate and I play Quake 3 on the same server all the time through our single IP. No special configuration required.

Ohh is Metallica looking out for all the starving artists? From Lars comments it sure doesn't seem that way.

Their own web page emphasizes recharging rather than running portable devices. It's still kind of cool, and could be usefull in limited situations.

wow, i've been watching too much college basketball. i just read your post and heard dick vitale's voice. ouch.
"just a little bit of rewiring needed. ;-) "
The rewiring is to make the motherboard support the chip. The chip supports SMP fine, no rewiring needed.

Actually i think calling things gay has come back into style. My little brother just graduated high school. He and his friends used it quite a bit.
