    An example of how a law restricting agreement destroyed a company.

    California: "We'll protect the workers! Non-complete clauses are now illegal!"

    People: "Weeeeeee!"

    Microsoft: "Ok, lets go hire up all the good people from smaller companies in California and crush these competitors!"

    Government: "I have a great idea! Let's add more laws to fix these. No one will be able to use this to their advantage."

    We are heading for a world where large Corporations use the law to dominate.

    I think some actual slaves would argue with your definition of slavey. Slavery invovles force. Actual, physical force.

    I sure do hate that I have to eat to live the way I want. I don't go into the garden of my neighbor and go, "If you don't give me that food right now then you are enslaving me!". People have to come to compromises for our world to operate. If one side can force the other to do something, then we live in nothing more than a dictatorship.

    This dictatorship is just fine while you are the one in power. When Bush is the dictator you whine "That's not fair, it's not right". Too bad, you gave your right to not be forced away a long time ago, and now you are no longer the majority. Get used to being pushed around.

    I hate the attitude that everything MicroSoft does and did invovled a corporate board meeting with Billy G. Not all of Microsoft is bad, there a divisions with good people, and divisions with bad people.

    If the BSD people wanted anything back THEY WOULD HAVE PUT THAT IN THE LISCENSE! Microsoft is not evil for using the BSD code.

    I have been to China, and the government there tries its hardest to remove the bereaucracy. They have a flat tax for corporations there.

    In business, just because you have money now, doesn't mean having money later. There are costs that don't show up on this quarter's report, but that need to be paid later none the less. You also have to return money to the stock holders, many of them middle class people who have invested money into your company and need to support thier life.

    Sometimes you have to make the decision of firing people now, so that others can keep their jobs later.

    No one does anything for free. Businesses support Linux because they reap the gains when another business or individual improves the system. People support linux because they feel good about it, want somekind of recognition, respect, admiration, or something else. No one does anything just because.

    Don't have a choice? So, that's why I use linux for my servers and linux for my desktops? That's also why people I know use macs. This is all because I have a choice. To say I don't is illogical.

    There is no such thing as a monopoly in software, it is an abstract concept. It is like saying someone has a monopoly in math.

    I used to want Microsoft split up. Then I realized that I, like most people, are angry at Microsoft for some reason or another. Instead of just not buying their software anymore or recommending linux to people, we want to use the guns of the government to get revenge.

    I still have not see an example of A)Fraud B)Theft C)Any real crime with a victim. If it can be shown that any of those occured, then that is what those who commited the crimes should be prosecuted for.

    They write the software, they can sell it how they like. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Just as you are not forced into how you buy it, they should not be forced into selling it a certain way. Freedom goes BOTH directions.

    The immediate response is, "Oh no! They're going take all my AIMs. They're destroying the world!"

    The truth is that there are some managers who were told by their lawyers that this should be put in "just in case of suit x,y,z". Terms of service are protective measures in the MAJORITY of software.

    Most likely this is for a situation in which AOL comes up with a good idea and someone sues saying, "Hey, I came up with that idea a year ago and talked about it over AIM. You stole it!" Many people have ideas, it is only original if you do something with it. Just covering their asses.

    The automatic response is that there is some evil plot to take your AIMs or something like that, but it is just business and covering their asses just like any other big business with tons of money that some lawyer thinks he can get his hands on because of a hole in the Terms of Service.

    Twenty Five providers on the first page. Some wireless. This is just for my area. Saying there is no competition means just being too lazy to find another provider.
