It's fairly simple. When employers insist that you need to go to a doctor when you are sick and get proof or they won't believe that you were, then people decide "if I have to go out anyway, I may as well go to work."
This is solved fairly well in Finland, where you have health centers in every district, so it's never more than 400 m away from your home. Flu cases are handled by nurses instead of MDs, so "throughput" is high. If the nurse finds that you might have a secondary infection, or something other than a flu, you are "escalated" to an MD in the same building.
Most workplaces don't have paid sick leave. Honestly, it is what it is, and this what Americans want. Hence this is what America gets.
Honestly, Americans "want" a whole lot more of fucked up stuff, like a dysfunctional healthcare system that does not cover 50 million of its citizens and it's still expensive.
That makes quite a bit of sense. Another factor is there are a bunch of similar consoles coming out all at the same time. They may end up spreading the people willing to buy the consoles too thin. I've already ordered an Ouya through their kickstarter, I'm most likely not going to get a Steambox or a game stick as well.
Besides, at a sub-$100 price, both the Ouya and the Gamestick are in impulse-buy territory. Especially the Ouya, at $99 packs some really nice specs.
Microsoft is losing market share in key markets. There are reasons why Microsoft could stumble, but they are so diversified and have so much capital that it would take a great number of massive failures for them to really go under.
Microsoft is making a fuckton of money (I'm talking about profits, not just revenue), that is true. And yes, they have an iron grip on the desktop, especially in corporations, and a dominant position that is a gift that keeps and will keep on giving for years to come.
But they are not diversified. People buy Office because they have Windows. And the same reason why they buy Windows Server and Sharepoint. The myth is that if you have Windows desktops, you must use Microsoft on the back-end as well. That's good for MS, but it also means that they're not diversified, because if Windows fails, everything follows, and MS implodes.
Serves Obama right For not putting any of the criminals responsible for the financial collpase in prison where they belong. Now those same criminals are suing the government.
Exactly - the same corporate psychopaths that caused the collapse of AIG, are the ones organizing this class action suit. Why? Because psychopaths have no shame, no remorse and no conscience.
The problem with political games is that... they're still political.
The problem with political free speech is that it's still... political. So freakin' what? Deny it because it's inconvenient, because you don't like it, or, as Apple does, because you can?
Android will be more than happy to have it. The same thing happened with Tawkon Apple didn't want it, but Android is open to anyone - (and even Google Play is much more open than Apple's appstore). Mind you, Tawkon requires true parallel multitasking to work the best (i.e. must run while the call is ongoing) which is not the case with iOS: on iOS Tawkon would only monitor the radiation emission at the very beginning of the call - on Android it does this during the call duration).
Also, as might be expected by those who have handled tin-lead solder, lead is soft and flexible. This helps lead paint adhere for a long time on surfaces with differing thermal coefficients of expansion.
When I decided to check out this thread, I didn't expect to find such a genuinely precious and deep contribution such as this. Thank you Vortex, for sharing it.
This work on Replicant is crucial and hopefully companies like Amazon which could gain from it will understand that and come out and support the project. Anyone who can contribute Android code should be working for the goals of Replicant wherever possible. Also you want to make sure that your code goes in to a neutral party under the AGPLv3 to make sure that you yourself will be able to get the benefit from it later.
To my mind, walled gardens and close ecosystems like Apple's, Microsoft's and Amazon's, are way more restricting on a person's freedom, than the way one can use an SDK which is distributed free (as in beer) for developing software that will run on an open source OS.
Google trying to NOT let slimeballs like Amazon get away with it too easily, is a good thing. We need less jails, not more.
I use the same trick for italian, but instead of the grave accent I use the acute one: Ã, Ã, Ã.
Croatian... well, I should really have a layout for Croatian. I really just ignore all the diacritical marks on the "c" and "z", and count on the reader's forgiveness.
Or, more accurately, Buddhists who use the Pali Canon, primarily the Theravada school. Chinese, Tibetan, Japanese, and most other traditions use the Sanskrit word "karma" from which the Pali word "kamma" is derived. It has nothing to do with Western or otherwise.
I do admit that I have experience almost exclusively with Theravada Buddhism and Buddhists. Thank you for informing me.
Yeah, I speak five of 'em - both parents of different ethnicity from the country I was born in (and from each others'), then learned English and finally the language of my adopted country (Finland).
Because Microsoft is a UEFI promoter, no Linux companies have representation at that level.
A quick perusal of the UEFI members shows several Linux companies, and a number of hardware vendors that contribute to the Linux kernel, including Red Hat, IBM, Canonical, Cray, etc...
The post you replied and "corrected" is still accurate: only Microsoft has promoter status.
Just read the article, or even just the summary: "The former CEO and current major shareholder" is the main stakeholder and organizer of this lawsuit.

Fuck Apple. And fuck you, too.

This is total non sequitur nonsense.
Cisco switches are made in China, with chinese-made components - that is, the nice ASICs put in the switches, the perfect place to put the backdoors.

How old was your daughter at the time of the events (when she turned off the router to get mom to make food), if you don't mind me asking?
And BTW, congratulations on raising a really smart kid.

If I need to write something in Hungarian, I use combination keys: the accent key followed by the vowel creates the corresponding accented vowel - and same with the umlaut: Ãf¼, Ãf, Ãf, Ãf, Ãf© etc. Doen't work well for the "long umlaut", so my hungarian correspondence isn't perfect, but nearly so. I just use the short umalut instead of the long one :/

Hate replying to myself, but WTF Slashdot? Fucked up all the vowels with diacriticals - ALL of them! Slashdot is so flaky.
Ok, here goes: I don't need to switch to English from Finnish - I just use Finnish layout to write English text. If I need to write something in Hungarian, I use combination keys: the accent key followed by the vowel creates the corresponding accented vowel - and same with the umlaut: ü, Ã, Ã, Ã, é etc. Doen't work well for the "long umlaut", so my hungarian correspondence isn't perfect, but nearly so. I believe you mean 'karma'.
Non-western Buddhists indeed use the word "kamma" for "karma".
Have you attempted to raise any bugs
What makes you think he's a beekeeper, and why does that matter anyway? ;D

I just realized I never use Caps Lock anymore. I don't even know when was the last time I used it, but it was long ago.
Gnome doesn't want to be left behind Unity in suckiness.
Just because you're buying "hardware" doesn't mean you're getting the privilege of installing whatever the hell you want on the device.
Go back to your grave Steve, you're drunk.

And also to haiku OS. They all were useful or fun' and still are.
Could you please define "professionalism", since at this point I've heard and read the word used and overused, and I don't understand it anymore.
Seriously, waiting for an answer.
