    Someone really needs to come up with an FPS controller that you can use in your lap while sitting on a couch or recliner.

    My suggestion is:
    - a foot board for moving (e.g. by tilting the board forward and sideways; jump by pushing it down)
    - Trackball in one hand for rotation/orientation.
    - Laser gun pointed at the screen in other hand for aiming. (no sharks involved)

    I am completely flabbergasted that the apparent solution to an expected population of 9 bln in 2050 is to produce more food... How about birth control??? It isn't like there aren't enough people already. FFS, in this country (the Netherlands) you still get "Kinderbijslag", which is basically a subsidy for having kids.

    Humanity isn't fast to wake up to the fact that it is becoming a plague. I think it would be wise to do so, or we'll end up like any other infestation: eradicated.

    The analogy with a switchmode power supply is completely b0rked. It doesn't contain any cars. (furthermore, switching off cores in a multicore server is complete unlike the 'switching' in a switch mode power supply)

    I never understood why anyone would want to interpret byte-code on a battery powered device.

    Allowing hardware diversity, while still providing a single binary (VM) interface to apps, might be a good reason.

    The reason why open source software works is that it is easy for people to contribute and it is essentially free to give someone a copy. That is not the case with hardware.

    That may be true for hardware, but not for hardware designs. When you have open PCB design formats, those can be shared for free and be easily contributed to.

    In order for the thing to be maintainable, the comments would have to outweigh the code by a factor of about 3 to 1

    Have you ever heard of (unit) testing? Tests will explain what functions and objects are supposed to do *and* verify that they actually do it.

    Current software will do none of those! 10 seems reasonable, but most software really doesn't run on 10 year old hardware. Set yourself up with 1999 machine and you'll be drinking really dangerous amounts of coffee when loading a recent firefox. So I think your parent poster has a good point.

    I keep hearing stories about AI getting there and that they'll be able to build a human brain in ten years or so. Once this 'brain' comes up with a joke like this I'll start to believe those stories.
