  1. What a dumb scheme to make money... on Stopping The 56K Hate · · Score: 1

    1. create a sort of fun web page with a topic relevant to a majority of internet users (e.g. 56k modem users)

    4. try to get featured on /. for added exposure
    Voilá!

PS: why should anyone hate 56k users? I hate DSL users, if it wasn't for them and everyone would still be on 56k, we'd have less bloated websites.

While I agree with your arguments, I do not agree with your conclusion.

The problem, as you said, is the libertarian approach to a monopoly. Without a monopoly, the proprietary software license is no threat.

Consequently I would say that ESRs argument is still valid, the proprietary software license alone does not lower his flerbage. Only when combined with a monopoly, but then it's the monopoly that should be outlawed.

But that is a different issue, please don't mix them up.

Well obviously you don't have any children either, now do you?

As the father of an 8-year old boy I can assure you he learned worse bad language (swearing etc.) in his catholic (!) kindergarden than you would imagine. Welcome to the real world ;-)
But as far as I can tell, it hasn't done him any harm.

So far he hasn't surfed the web unattended, and I would explain to him what to expect and how it works and do it together for the first couple of times until I felt shure he was able to handle it by himself mentally (or come to me to talk about it if not).

As a matter of fact, I am much more concerned with other problems my kid has to face every day in real life, like drunken drivers, violence, polluted air, TV and radio (murders!, catastrophies!, lying politicians!), cigarettes. Now all of this stuff is taken for granted by society, and nobody ever complains, eh?

In my experience, kids have a pretty good understanding of their own of what's nice and what's ugly.
Tits are just natural after all and hard porn is just gross or boring. In essence, kids are way smarter than you think they are, and they'll figure out your lies and falseness anyway, so why not be honest and explain it to them right away?
Besides, I just don't think it works technically. If software nannies kept out 99% of whats ugly but your kid stumbled into that one really ugly porn site it hasn't, what has it helped? Bad nightmares anyway...

  11. Come on people on IBM Ports Linux to S/390 · · Score: 1

If you read that article youll find its all speculations. No hard facts.
Now I dont happen to know for shure that theyre not developing it, but I was over there at the development section for the S/390 applying for a job less than six months ago. And believe me, they told me a lot about what they were doing.
The were looking for people with Linux and Java experience, but not for the S/390 itself. They have a Thinkpad thats sort of built into the main machine and being used as a controller (to boot up the mainframe and to monitor it etc.).
Theyre are moving that thing from OS/2 to Linux and Java, which is no big deal since its just another PC. Thats not to be confused with the real machine, which is an altogether different issue.
Id say it is highly doubtful. To make Linux work on their mainframe would require a complete rewrite, they might as well develop a new OS from scratch.
Besides the performance gain for this machine lies in its tailored applications. OK so it takes longer to do that. But why would anyone want to run a slow emulation on his expensive hardware? Besides, companies take much longer to upgrade even windows boxes, they dont install the latest hype everyday like you freaks. They take 2 to 3 years. Why should they care if porting SAP to the S/390 takes a little longer?
Use your brain people, think (different).

For a comp.science master just graduated, you can get 80kDM a year for a start if you're good (though you have to ask for a little more).

Friends tell me that in certain areas like Munich theyll pay over 100kDM for the same job.

Keep in mind that this is for a 40-hour week and 30 days of vacation per year (unlike the US)!

Generally it can be said that the german IT-industry is desperately seeking qualified personnel, although it seems to me that most of the jobs are pretty basic grunt work (administration, web-site management, etc.) for a computer scientist. The _really_ interesting jobs are rare.

Even though our taxes are high the salaries seem to be excellent compared to other european countries, I know some people from Spain and France with a comp.sci masters degree who gave themselves away for much less than they could have gotten (like 50kDM/year) and still were absolutely happy.
