between your obvious disdain for the stations website, your obvious feelings toward the reporter in question, the implied feelings toward the rest of the "non-geek" people at the station, all taken from your posts within this thread, you might want to hope that none of the higher ups where you work become aware of this article.
After all, you do come off as someone not really happy about where you work, and they can always fix that for you......
you know, they have these people you can hire, called lawyers, who will go over all of that for a very paltry fee in comparison to the amount of money you just hedged against for the rest of your life. And for the most part, these people are very good at what they do.
and the day that any one of those product TRUELY outshines MS Office in the corporate world (Exchange sucks ass but it is the de facto standard), is the day people will do so.
until then, they will want to use the same thing their employers provide to them and that they can easily "acquire" either pre-installed on their mega mart box or through a nice little boxed app they purchase (or not).
most people dont daily drive on highways for any significant amount of time.
instead they take their BOXY but easy to get stuff into vehicle to Wally world to get shit for the kids, Best Buy (et al) to get the newest DVD's / CD's, the local mega mall to let the kids wander around, the local soccer field to drop off the kids, the local grocery store to get the food of life, the local fast food joint for dinner, etc.
so aerodynamics plays a lot less of a part then simply not mashing the gas pedal to the floor when taking off from every red light in town.
aerodynamics for vehicles are highly over rated for the large majority of driving time.
and yes, i drive a full size pickup, with a setup for towing, and the associated gearing, and yet, I'm able to somehow, miraculously get 19-20 mpg when driving said vehicle from Iowa to North Carolina three times over the last year.
As an avid motorcyclist, i can say that a large majority of the time I've been nearly turned to a small spot on the road is due to morons driving cars who are on cell phones.
These morons (or cagers as we motorcyclists car eto call them) come in all shapes and sizes and so do their vehicles.
in fact i can provide anectodatal evidence of everythign from a fucking little college girl who ran a buddy off the road while merging off an off ramp, to the time a farmer pulled his combine onto the road directly in front of a group of 20 bikes.
None of that means a shit to anybody but the people who were there, yet i can say that i'd much rather we prosecute idiots who arent paying attention than go after a specific type of vehicle.
FYI, this isnt exactly a new situation for motorcyclists. We've been complaining about this longer than SUV's have been a mainstream vehicle.
How about instead of trying to lump people by the type of vehicle, we instead start issuing "distracted driver" tickets to all those morons deserving of them.
I'm fairly certain every state in the union has a distracted driving law on the books.
AMD is STRONGEST in the Server market. Period. The may not sell the most, but this is where they shine the best.
There is absolutely no denying this.
The Opteron chip is what basically saved AMD from liquidation and pushed Intel to come up with a new architecture to compete.
This like most of the techno anti-trust cases is plain old Bullshit and reeks of nothing more than more bashing on big guys, which our government appears to like to do more and more.
And they wonder why more and more businesses are starting to locate outside of the USA.
Intel has done plenty to go after them for, so has Apple, AT&T, Verizon, every cable company in existence, and most utility companies.
go spend the tax dollars doing something useful and not merely justifying your useless political existences.
computer idiots are computer idiots and they will have problems regardless of the setup.
now you get to support them when they jsut click "go away" on the updater service for their ubuntu install, and possible have something that could lead to a complete hack of the system.
its no different except you probably feel better about supporting the linux install because you prefer it.
its funny. they have these things called DSLAMS. They put them up in neighborhoods. Where people live. And then run a connection back to the central office.
funny how i can live a LONG way from my local CO, yet have a remote DSLAM just down the street.....
How about because if you already pay for netflix, this service is entirely free.
meaning i can watch any of the "Watch it Now" movies (and TV shows) they offer simply by using this device.
And the sheer number (and its been increasing rather dramatically lately) of titles available simply dwarfs the offerings from any on demand service available.
Can you watch Dexter Season 1? Tripping the Rift Season 1, Heroes Season 1 and 2, A Fairly large number of Anime titles, a fairly large number of older movies from the 80's and 90's?
you may not want to, but some people do, and now they can without t he need to have a cable or even a satellite connection in their home.
I actually use my Vista MC with a netflix plug-in to do this all the time.
If you don't give the everyday user account administrator status, then when UAC prompts appear, you cant blindly click on "yes".
It's only because people blindly make all of their everyday accounts "administrator" accounts on Windows machines that this is even possible.
These same people would NEVER think of running as root on their *nix machines, yet will run as administrator all day long on their windows machines.
How is this the fault of the OS? Should Windows by default prevent people running as the administrator account and ask them for permission each time they try to do something that only a real administrator account should be doing?
Your reasoning in using Netflix is fundamentally flawed.
Why?
Because in using Netflix, you are NEVER going to have a Physical media for anything you watch from them. Not that you get to keep forever.
You are renting the item from them for the purposes of watching, not owning.
This is a HUGE difference.
A better analogy would be the one already posted.
That you PURCHASE from your local big box store a Blu-Ray movie, and before it will begin to play at all, you have to have your player hooked up to the internet and let it "call home" to verify that everything is correct.
you obviously do not know very much about marketing.
Please tell me you don't really think that "New and Improved" bottle of shampoo in your shower is anything more than a different bottle holding the same old shampoo.... They're called "Weasel Words" for a reason.
oh wait......
i just made a terrible assumption......
i assumed a/. user has shampoo in their shower.....

I'm just sayin'.........
Well killing off stupid users is sort of self defeating isn't it?

newsflash
the population density of north america is several times smaller than that of europe too.
most people dont daily drive on highways for any significant amount of time.
instead they take their BOXY but easy to get stuff into vehicle to Wally world to get shit for the kids, Best Buy (et al) to get the newest DVD's / CD's, the local mega mall to let the kids wander around, the local soccer field to drop off the kids, the local grocery store to get the food of life, the local fast food joint for dinner, etc.

aerodynamic brick that it is.......

firat guess is either proprietary installed apps that sont need to be there, or crappy av progrmas like norton or macafee.
personally, i run either AG or avast free editions.
i also do not install any bloatware onto the computer.
You can also go in and change the way UAc works (SP1 does a lot of this anyway)
o personally also turn off the "secure desktop" becuase i find that some computers have an issue with this.
you can do this quite easily from inside the following:
Administrative tools -> Local Security policy.
you can also change how UAC reacts for different users.
finally, i usually set most of my page files smaller as I would rather use more memory and dont feel an 8gb page file is needed.
if she doesnt use it, kill hibernation.
if she wants to make everything faster, use the laptop and make sure euperfetch is enabled, then it will learn and keep common app dll's loaded.
if she isnt so worried about battery life, go kill the intel chip power management which cuts clock speed all the time.
also change the power settings for when it is plugged in to not shut things off so fast or try and save so much power.
the biggest thing i found was that most people simply want to bitch about it and not use it cause of what they have heard.
personally, i like it, but then again, i like fedora 9 too.
And you do realize that the practices which Intel were supposedly fined for in Korea, are perfectly legal in the USA, right?
In fact, if you read the fucking article you referenced there, it specifically said so.

asshats.
You're not the only one with no problems with Vista.
I've got it running on 30 machines with no problems at all.
personally have it running on 4 without problems either.
then again, I actually learned about Vista and didnt just blindly accept what "the sheeple" did.
personally, I have yet to find any person i know that haas had an issue with Vista, that wasn't related to a third party.
Annoyances? Yes.
Problems? No.
its not very hard at all.
especially if you aren't allowed to ask for any type of verification.
every time i vote, i laugh at the ability to just tell them my name and then get a ballot and vote.
nothing ever done to verify i am who i say i am.
ever.
so i can go vote as my now deceased grandfather very easily, all i have to do is go to his polling place and tell them i'm him.
it's actually so shamefully easy, i'd be surprised if even half the votes cast are real.
S'okay. /. either.....
:D
Doesn't work for
prolly works for Internet Explorer Homepage tho....
Have you ever installed Vista?
i thought not.

STOP TRYING TO USE LOGIC IN AN INTERNET ARGUMENT!!!!!
You must only use emotion and facts which have no ability to be backed up (unless it's by wikipedia maybe).
It works by pressurizing the oil fields and thus adding the ability to draw oil from sources which were no longer able to be effectively used.
It is not any different than pumping water into oil fields (which Russia has been doing for decades) to artificially re-pressurize the sources.
Now this is an overly simplistic explanation, but is the basic principle.
