  1. Re:An Informed Congress on Congress@Work · · Score: 1

Once upon a time I read about a 'corruption index' of developed nations. I think it was a Robert Anton Wilson book. As I recall, the U.S. ranked somewhere near the bottom of the chart. 17th, I think. We were ranked below some seriously fucked up nations. If anyone has a copy of 'Everythink Is Under Control' by R.A. Wilson, I think the chart is in there.

They've actually been talking about this for years. Last year, I was at a 'hackers and law' conference at our local law school, and 2 CdC members were there (oxblood, and BroncBuster). They were debating with a local FBI agent, and they ended up actually discussing this project back then. I think the idea is great! I just wish that they had 'sourceforge'd' it so others can help! Maybe they will do that at defcon...

I have mixed opinions on this matter. UC schools are excellent institutions, and I'd hate to see their reputations harmed by allowing MORE idiots into the system. There is really no telling whether or not this will happen as a result of abolishing SAT's, but it could. I also think that this might be a good first step. Standardization, and examinations are far overrated in my opinion. Einstein flunked physics, and went on to make some of the most insightful discoveries of his generation. Reliance on tests has created hordes of excellent test-takers, but does this test taking skill really transfer over that well into the real world? I don't know, and if anyone does I'd appreciate some feedback.

We need something new, and something built on the hacker ethic. broadband packet radio anyone?

I agree. I really do believe that a revolution is underfoot. Not just on internet grounds but everywhere. The powers that be are endlessly attempting to control us. The things we say, think, and do all go through systematic checks. This is what I believe political correctness is.

I have no doubt that the net will be the next to be regulated. The government is scared shitless about the 'free_flow' of information. They have to choose sneaky ways to legislate our freedoms away, because remember we are the "land of the free". If they were open about it we'd be as openly fascistic as China. I think that they actually believe American's still believe they live in a democracy. ya right. The fortunate thing for us is that we're the ones who have the power. Just like Neal Stephenson talks about the Morlocks and the Eloi, we are the elite class who understands the technology. Don't forget politicians are usually business majors or lawyers. They have NO CLUE about these things we hold so dear. They can make laws until the cows come home, but they can't prevent _us_ from always being one step ahead of those laws. At least I hope not.

Does anybody actually think that MS is going to have to really shake up the company or open source the code (Ya right!)? This is the US Government that we are dealing with here, they might just be the only group of people sleazier than Microsoft. Realistically they are after the one thing that matters....Thats right, $MONEY$. Microsoft will probably get fined, and have their feathers rustled (for TV/media purposes) ,but the one thing that will likely change will be that MS will now have to have gobs of lobbyists staked out in DC forking over gobs of money to corrupt politicians. MS will continue producing inferior software, the Gov't will continue being sleazy, and we'll beat Mircrosoft with the one thing that matters... quality.
