    this is where personal mobile chip and pin smart readers could come into play. you can authorise a payment based on total using it with all the (limited) security of the pin number of your credit/debit card and the challenge response system of the card readers. What becomes unclear is how the seller is meant to process the payment. Anyone have info on how this is meant to be done? In the US as i understand it these personal chip and pin reader devices are getting more common but they're very new in the UK

    the idea is that the transaction total is on the terminal when you enter your pin, and the pin does not leave the terminal. There should be no way for the store to replay the transaction with the same or different value. Obviously that's the theory. . .

    I take it you are in the usa or another non eu part of the world. The issue that causes that is that they probably experience the 'so where's that then?' question if they say 'Vienna' (or wherever) all the time, and find it easier to just say 'Europe' because most people are not very aware of (I hesitate to use the word ignorant, that implies the wrong issue) the geography of Europe. Including alot of 'Europeans'.

    if you can spend several years training every person in the world solely on computer use, or if you can mandate that only clever people are allowed to use computers, but the knowledge required to use OSS alternatives are higher than for Windows.

    If the os did require that (and i'm not sure i agree with the premise) then it is a design flaw in the os. Don't think 'Stupid User', Think 'Poorly designed ui/app/os'

    the obvious target of this attempt at patenting someone else's idea into their spreadsheet app is other peoples' spreadsheet apps (openoffice et all). Just goes to show that with stunts like this Micro$oft still hasnt changed their rattlesnake type business ethics

    The problem with any digital format is the that the sound is broken up into discrete bits. Even a lower quality vinyl can feel rounder and more 3d than a high quality digital recording.

    poppycock, any attempt to label an audio format as poorer because it uses 'discrete bits' (aka a digital distribution) rather than an analogue format is just deluded, and misrepresents the science of audio
