Exactly! And thanks for pointing it out. Credit card theft and identity theft are two VERY different things, a fact that seems to escape most people. Probably because the people who sell 'insurance' against identity theft want us to confuse them.

Actually, 98% of the population will only shy away from something like this is they're told what the process actually is. If they are told rather that it's their "Personal Online Banking Disc", and are then given instructions to walk them through the process, most people will happily buy into it. Most people wouldn't hesitate to install an app for this purpose, so the Live CD just needs to be marketed properly.

I started this thread and I'm tired of one assumption you all keep making: You all keep talking about my hatred of America. Well, let me spell this out for you - I LOVE AMERICA. I have done so my entire life. The fact that I disagree with you does not mean I don't love my country, neither does it mean I love my country less than you. Th truth is that I just hold my country to a higher standard than you do.

Google's market capital: $153.4 billion as of October 5 2009. China's GDP: $4.33 Trillion US dollars as of 2008. China's got more, therefore it's got more to lose. Simple math.

This is really interesting stuff. I think the big payoff will come when they get to the point where bone can be 'printed'. Considering all the money there is in professional athletics, the ability to 'print' new kneecaps for athletes would be huge.

Success in our culture is often measured by money. Unfortunately, money and morals don't usually go together. So we generally have to make a choice - do I want to be rich, or would I rather be able to teach my kids the difference between right and wrong? Personally, I think you made the right choice.

  15. The Music Industry 'Gets it' on UMG To Price New CDs Under $10 · · Score: 0

Every time the price of music comes up, I read dozens of comments that say, in a nutshell, that the music industry 'doesn't get it'. And yet, they're still up to their necks in money. While the music industry (and the film industry) seem to be doing everything in their power to resist the onslaught of the internet, their continued profits would argue that their resistance is not exactly futile.

  17. Let the Games Begin... on Microsoft Announces Windows 7 SP1 · · Score: 3, Interesting

Windows 7 is the best product MS has released in years. While this may be considered a pyrrhic victory (ME, anyone?), the fact remains that Windows 7 is a solid product. And, I daresay, a reasonably priced one. Do we have to continue this tired process of Microsoft bashing? It's gotten rather tiresome.

The failure on the part of the manufacturer of these fakes is that they shipped them to precisely the wrong market. Thousands of these puppies could have ended up in desktop computers and nobody would ever have known. The average consumer has no idea what's inside the case. Instead, though, the fakes end up at Newegg, where they get purchased by exactly the kind of people who can recognize them for what they are. It's almost like they were trying to get caught.

Jane - Here's your problem - you mistook Slashdot for a place where you can engage in intelligent conversation. This is not the case. I was similarly modded into trolldom a short while ago for having the audacity to point to the fact that there is no direct evidence of evolution (I do, however, believe in evolution, just the same). Because Slashdot is the stomping grounds of adolescents (of any age), comments that APPEAR to be trollish are immediately assumed to be so. No one actually thinks about the actual words written before they mod them. My point here is that you have chosen the wrong venue for this discussion. Nobody here wants to hear you making sense. They just want you to say something funny (and by funny, I mean something that refers to at least one body part and/or geek pop culture reference). If you actually want to have an intelligent conversation, though, you came to the wrong place.
