  1. Why are we stuck with clear?!?! on Plastic Water Bottles, Which Enabled a Drinks Boom, Now Threaten a Crisis (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

Existing recycling technology needs clean, clear plastic to make new water bottles...

Aside from the obvious trust factor of being able to see what you're drinking, why are bottlers forced to use clear plastic? Seems like an easy solve to expand supply of recycled material.

  2. So this is just a snippet the NY Times has shared. Where's the rest?? While the prospect of not being alone is quite horrifying, we shouldn't hide from it. Does a truth like this represent an unraveling of the fabric of our society? So many possibilities with which to contend!

Hope it doesn't end up like this tho... https://www.amazon.com/Three-B...

Agree 100% on this reply; I disagree 100% with the title of this post.

I'm a "Moviegoer". Rotten Tomatoes is usually the first place I go when I'm thinking about seeing any movie and the second place I go after looking up where to stream a movie via Justwatch. I definitely care _and_ value what Rotten Tomatoes says. I don't rely on it 100% when deciding whether or not to view a particular movie. However, it's one of those things that's weighted heavily in my own personal moviegoing algorithm. Vast majority of the time I agree with what Rotten Tomatoes has told me. I don't get the hate on it.

  4. Still very loud on NASA Has a Way to Cut Your Flight Time in Half (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

I'm not sure how reliable the "NATS" site is (http://www.nats.aero/environment/aircraft-noise/) but according to that page, aircraft at cruise altitude appear to come in around 40 dBA. This NASA target is 60-65 dBA... more than 50% higher than the people-movers of today. As someone who lives under the ingress/egress route of a local airport, this seems like an egregious increase in ambient noise. Huge fan of halving flight time but not at the expensive of my auditory sanity!

In all seriousness, is this blustering by Putin (if we are correct in assuming that Putin=Russia in totality now, which seems to be the case) something we should be seriously concerned about? The Soviet propaganda machine was a force to be reckoned with during the Cold War (make no mistake, so was ours in the US). Is this just a resurrection of that PR engine or should we actually be concerned of a real threat of nuclear armageddon?? Won or lost, the Cold War isn't something for which anyone should be nostalgic.

College is about expanding your mind (and your alcohol tolerance, if you're into that sorta thing); not growing more closed minded and intolerant. Holy crap, I fear for our future and for these nimrods coming into the workforce. As if the current brand of entitled millenials weren't bad enough. It's going to take kids of us Gen-Xers to clean up this mess (do they even have a generation name yet? let's skip it.).

Why do all the cloud forms follow such a similar drift pattern? Is it the movement of the stars themselves within their local group? Is there a count of how many stars are being formed here? The IR image suggests quite a few.

  18. China needs to get to Mars first... on NASA Unveils Design for New Space Launch System · · Score: 4, Insightful

What is being overlooked here, imo, is the factor that drove the Apollo program to such fantastic feats on its relatively short timescale. That type of commitment and effort is _never_ going to be undertaken without the threat of another country topping the US. Barring the type of wake-up-call moment like Sputnik or Gagarin, the necessary desire to get us to the aspirational next level will continue on this iterative path of fits and starts. The key factor that allowed for Mercury -> Gemini -> Apollo was the race to the moon. Right now we have these wishy-washy blurred objectives like wouldn't it be great to visit an asteroid or maybe we'll be walking on Mars in 20 years. F that. We really need a challenger. China. Like the title says, they need to get to Mars. Will them putting something real into orbit do the trick? Is that even attainable given their current launch capabilities (I think so). Until something like that happens, we're doomed to live in this bureaucratic netherworld of pork. The public (I'm guilty too) is too apathetic to realize the country could really use something inspiring like this. Otherwise all the wonderful brainpower out there will continue to funnel into the world of spooky finance transactions... who can blame them!!

Looking at Griffin's background listed in Wikipedia... seems like he's got a pretty solid background in science (and a little business flavor thrown in). What gives?
