I'm not able to open it up in full view on the iGoogle homepage like I could before, it redirects to the actual Gmail page. My guess is that it's unencrypted, but all someone would have access to now would be the subject line and the first few words of the emails in your inbox.
Is it really that much worse compared to XP? Look at how many versions that had: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP_editions
Realistically the average consumer walking into Best Buy is only going to have two choices: Basic and Home Premium. The Starter edition will only be sold in emerging markets, Business is for businesses, and ultimate for enthusiasts.
They said on 60 minutes that OLPC expects to sell to US education in the future an eventually to US individuals if you pay double (like the old rumors). You pay double because you're buying two, one for your own child, and one for a child in a poor country.
