Might not be BUT there are MANY MANY laws about abuse of monopoly position as MS and Intel have found out many time. If they do not renew the licence I am sure the EU will have a very EXPENSIVE reason for them to renew :)

You think that because it costs MS millions that nobody else can write an OS. *nix (the term for Unix like systems) have been around LONGER than windows. Microsoft even sold a *nix system called xenix many years ago. I used one for years. Most deskop Linux distributions ship with a FULL set of office type apps that can read and write MS files called open office. I am writing this post using Ubuntu Linux running Firefox, no sign of Windows anywhere! If you are stupid enough to pay $100s for Windows + Office then fine. Just realise there are other options that cost NOTHING. WAKE UP :)

You are NEVER productive in a large scale project until you have used language X in anger and have made mistakes. The MS anti malware software at one point allowed one contentious malware because MS has a stake in the company. Not sure if it still does but I don't hold my breath.

Just look at OOXML and the patent time bomb MS is trying to push. Not many TRUST MS any more.

I get the feeling VistaMEII will have a SHORT shelf life and the next version will come out soon. I assume your post has a "conflict of interest" if you really are an MS dev so say what you want, you won't be believed :)

Yes, the music industry USED to have a vice like grip on distribution. But with the internet and modern PC's that grip has all but gone.

You do know that all of the majors had a round table with Napster before the sued it into the ground?

The deal would have been along the lines of $10/month for all you can eat music with full audit of downloads to enable distribution of money etc. Napster was a SINGLE point of distribution that everyone already used. The PERFECT distribution system. Instead they got scared, the model was too far from CDs.

The killed Napster and since then it has been a downward spiral for them. The music is out there free. All they can do now is make a new model that is compelling enough.

You should read up a little on the subject... The average spend per year for iTunes users is $10, remember iTunes charges $1+ per song. The average spend per year for eMusic customers is $168, they charge $0.33 per song and even less if you spend more. I am willing to bet the average spend for AllOfMP3 users was far more than the tiny $10/year that iTunes pulls in.

When you charge less people think less about the expenditure and so spend more.

Radiohead are allowing fans to pay what they feel like for their new albumm which they have SELF published. The middle man is DEAD. They just have not realised it yet. If they CHANGE they might just have a chance.

  8. Re:EMI gets it... on New Head of EMI Says 'Embrace Digital Music or Die' · · Score: 1

Actually. If people continue to purchase songs at inflated prices the record companies will think this is what people are willing to pay and will not change. AllOfMP3 might be on dodgy ground BUT and this one is a HUGE but. The prices they charged are the prices that people WANT to pay. It does not matter WHAT the record companies WANT to charge because if people are not willing to pay it then they will still DIE. The business model they have BROKE when the internet removed distribution control. Now they change or die. Simple supply and demand from 1st grade.

Sorry but if you don't agree with something then don't buy it. That is the ONLY way they will listen.

AllOfMP3 and emusic are the way forward. People like the prices of these sites so lost of money changes hand.

Once the first of the majors die the rest might actually start to understand. If the price is too high then DO NOT BUY, just email the artist to let them know you WOULD buy their music if it was a fair price.

Point 2....... It doesn't matter that you don't have a blue ray disk. It does not matter even if you NEVER intend to get a blue ray disk. Your second point just shows how naive you are in this respect. The DRM code is required from the start through to the end of the signal. This means that your GFX card drivers have to respect ALL the DRM requirements even if you don't plan on using them. The same is true throughout the OS. We are over 3 months into the FULL Vista(ME) release now and both NVidia and ATI are still unable to get their graphics drivers working BECAUSE of the DRM issues. Now think a little. This OS has been in the pipeline for OVER 5 YEARS. All the companies in the work could see Vista(ME) comming. There was no shock.. BOOM... here is a new OS. So given all this the ONLY conclusion you can draw from this is the DRM requirements in the drivers are so harsh that even the hardware makers can't make their kit work properly. So YES the DRM DOES MATTER.

They are trying to charge a LOT for an item that costs near to nothing to copy and distribute. That is the problem.

Their business monel WORKED when it was not cheap to copy and distribute copies which is why they always try and get "taxes" put on the various forms of blank media.

An all you can eat Global licence is a far better solution. Anyone that wants legal access to music or films pays a monthly subscription, the same way you pay your Sky or Cable subscription now. Probably paid at the ISP level.

Every "item" downloaded is counted and then each month the royalties are distributed to the artists based on a pro-rate of download counts.

How hard can it be. The subs can be low because of the number of people paying them.

Change or die. The RIAA and MPAA know their death is coming, they just want to use DRM and the courts to prolong their life.

Yep, I think MS have a real panic on their hands at the moment.

    1) The new OS they took 5 years to create has gone down as well as Windows ME. The fact that the protection systems are so harsh that even NVidia and ATI are having big problems getting drivers working. Lets face it, its not like VistaME appeared out of the blue. Apple are on the Os X marketing offensive big time now they smell blood.
    2) Thy are failing to get their office xml ratified as a standard while the open version is close to full ISO now. Government bodies are starting to want docs in an open standard format. The move is slow but the momentum is now building and this could really weaken the hold Office has on the world and let Open Office take market share.
    3) Their attempts to hold the DRM keys to music and films is falling to pieces. Apple are still giving MS a pounding no matter how hard MS trys. They broke their own "plays for sure" [sic] system with Zune and now the first of the big players in the content industry are ready to walk away from DRM on music. Lets see how long DRM lasts now.
    4) They cant get a foot hold in search against Google.
    5) The open source community is trying to kill their attempt to get the control of linux with GPL V3. At least the in-fighting on GPL V3 might help them here.

They only place they have done well is in the console market but only because the original "big boy" dropped the ball and stopped listening to their suppliers (Content creators hate the fact the PS3 is so hard and hence costly to work with) and customers (Hate the high cost and no big exclusives that make the extra cost worth it)

    Yep, a mild panic
