Xtrace identifies the Vista TCP/IP stack as identical to the Windows NT stack.
Obviously the code is similar at least. However, I would bet that its just a cut and paste job.
At home I love to use Ubuntu, I've long given up on Windows.
I've tried out OpenSolaris a few times, mainly to get use to the subtle differences between Linux and Solaris. As part of my job heavily involves using Solaris its nice to use the OpenSolaris system to learn what I can in my spare time. I know there are many differences between Solaris and OpenSolaris, but the gap isn't as large as from Linux.
That said, personally I think the icon theme in Gnome for OpenSolaris is pretty nice looking. Gnome has a very polished look in OpenSolaris. It would be a shame to see Oracle kill this project, I think OpenSolaris has a lot of potential. If anything, they should invest more in OpenSolaris. If I had a home server, I would definitely consider using it.
I remember a few years ago I found one of my old P3 computers hiding in a basement and turned it into a network storage / linux router. I would off load time intensive stuff to it so my desktop wouldn't be as bogged down while I was gaming.
Well, one day I was SSH'd into it and it was going really slow, and then it stopped responding all together. So I went to my basement to investigate.... It turned out the reason it wasn't responding was that the old power supply on the P3 had caught fire. Nothing too serious, I could only see the smoke coming out of it. I just unplugged everything an moved it outside to cool off.
Anyways, the point is, make sure you clean it up before using it! Get all that dust and crud out before you set it up and forget about it. I suppose that probably goes left unsaid, but honestly I neglected to, so I suppose others could forget/be too lazy too.
These patent deals have divided the Linux community. Microsoft is using patents to destroy Linux, they just aren't fighting the way you thought they would.
You should really download the unix tools for windows http://sourceforge.net/projects/unxutils. It makes life a little more bearable, not to mention less embarrassing. I don't know how many times I've been asked what ls does...
I googled my school name, Sheridan college. And all the search results from the Sheridan domain were not tagged as harmful. Try playing around with it.
So Darl is going to basically sell off most of what the company has to continue a lawsuit he has no hope of winning? What the HELL is wrong with this guy? Worst. CEO. EVAR.
Its such a desperate gambit. In the SCO movie, I have a feeling Darl McBride will be played by Nicholas Cage. He will be twitchy, incomprehendable at points and everyone will love to hate him.
You raise a good point. I haven't read anything regarding DRM either. However I guess its beta and we will probably be hearing those complaints sometime soon. DRM isn't evil, it could have practical security uses, but not by the OS without the option to opt out.
Has anyone tried running Windows 7 Beta in a virtual machine? Any complaints or heads up? I'm normally not up for testing beta's of OS's but it might be fun to toss in virtual box and see whats up.
Why does the security industry have such a problem with it?
If phishing was a no talent game, there would be better detection methods built into web browsers to deal with it.
Phishing is always going to work. There are tons of stupid people out there, and even more that are intoxicated or high on something. Either way, its easy pickings.
I for one will be taking this into account when purchasing a new laptop in the next year. It would be nice to have more selection, perhaps I will in that amount of time. This is a HUGE priority in my selection process, I dream of a day when my laptop flawlessly works with external displays, and intuitive programs to drive it.
One a side note, does anyone know if this will affect the VM environment for gaming? Would a powerful open source driver be of any use without open source specs on the hardware itself? Virtual box has an option to emulate a soundblaster 16 card.
The auto industry has been pushing their weight around for years to prevent hybrids and alternative power for vehicles. Obviously they were unwilling to change their ways and try to help the environment. Hopefully new companies will emerge that will be more open to innovation.
Seems like companies will take advantage of the consumer at every chance they get. Obviously your laptop should cost LESS with Windows XP pre-installed as it is a dated product.
Vista does have a few valuable features that I believe give it superiority over XP.
Fast user switching in Domain environments is a big plus.
Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol with their new VPN Client would be a huge bonus to corporate VPN users.
However, these are the only two nice things I have to say about Vista, and honestly their is no reason these features couldn't have been integrated into Windows XP. While these features are beneficial to corporate environments, Vista is hardly a candidate for a corporate workstation. Regardless if you have been running Vista without problems, slap it on enough workstations and laptops, and you will begin to see the issues trying to support it.
I use Ubuntu, although I was recently employed with a small company that wanted to keep up to date on Windows operation systems so I found myself supporting a number of Vista users. It was definitely one of the busiest jobs I've ever had.
It seems to me that even if your CPUs were "pwnd" they would still have to use the network to relay information. No suspicious network traffic, no problem. Now if your Ciscos were made in China, your in a totally different world of pain.
Agreed. Malicious software is only what it is, malicious. Even if it does perform some decent functionality you are better off finding an alternative piece of software that can perform the same task. Odds are, you can find an OS equivalent.
You know, wiping out a bot infected computer of any personal information or even all information might actually be doing that person a favour. It is better then having that information falling into the wrong hands.
I could go either way on this, its the computer equivalent of vigilantes. But what happens when bot net controllers star to realize identity theft is a pretty lucrative business too?
And have not noticed any throttling. My P2P programs work fine if they were able to work any faster I would be shocked. I do not believe Cogeco is throttling.
You're hired.
Read the first posters points (in TFA) he pretty much sums everything up.

Cognitive radio Does it really matter if we ever run out of spectrum?
Is far superior to either of these. Google it. It has the closest compatibility with microsoft office. I would post a link to it but I'm on my iPhone.

I believe microsoft will allow critical updates even to pirated versions of their software. As not doing so would result in a massive infection rate.

One word:
Anti-trust.
