Lotus notes. You know the software that was a huge thorn in microsofts side for many years when the battle for communication between office's / workers was batteling between exchange and notes.
I can see this happening as this will be the next big release of office to get sales up again.
I have seen many treads relating to office features being minimal, and releases being very few. Maybe this would be a new release with a outlook/word/lotus notes mirgration.
Who knows (note I havent kept up with lotus notes in about 5 years) maybe with the migration of those 3 items they would be able to create a very nice system for communication as well as sharing documents accross offices etc etc.
But then again maybe they will just keep them seperate.
The company is still swearing up and down that it does not contain any pearPC source code.
Yes many people have found things that are simular (to the point that yes this seems like a license violation), but until the developers can audit the code, or they are taken to court, there is not enough proof (legal proof?) that this is a license violation.
They do not claim to use any other source code, and after downloading the applicaton, their license is not related to or reference the GPL at all.
As for the suppying the source, I never understood why people belive that they need to have a link available to the source online to comply with the GPL. Hell if a company wanted to they could supply you the source in the form of a print out (or alphabit soup) and they would comply with the terms of the GPL license.
When did people lose the right to not live any longer? This topic has allways seemed silly to me, if someone wants to die let them. If they can't do it them selves for some reason, there should be some way they can ask for assitance.
I've had one of the trackman mouses now for around 5 years now. This mouse has out lasted computers and monitors. Works just as good as the first day I bought it. I have also never had any wrist/hand probles the entire time I use it.
"If you don't know how to configure your crappy little MS firewall, maybe you shouldn't be running your crappy little MS Web Server."
That was kind of the point I was trying to point out in so few of words.
I would think that alot of people could be running IIS (or a trojan webserver, mailserver ftp etc) without even knowing. The fact that it does cause services to stop running (the firewall) and require people to allow them makes sence to me. From my expierences this is how a firewall should be setup, deny everything, then go back through and only allow items as needed.
What would people on slashdot complain about the most? 1) An unsecured XP Pro machines that are used as botnets connecting to IRC, FTP mail, or. 2) a machine that causes this services to not function correctlly because they are blocked by a firewall, and stays blocked if the person dosen't know how to unblock them (I would also guess they would then find out about the trojans installed too).
Who exactlly does this help other then a few very large companies with very bad/old business models?
From what I understand, this suffercates inovation, really hurts customers, and causes many people to lose jobs, and many many more over the next couple of years.
"Sometimes, when I feel most let down by Steve Jobs for doing something that just seems to be contrary to the very Apple-nature of the company, he makes a decisive reversal of tack and makes everything all right again."
What are you talking about? It didn't say they were dropping the subpoenas, they are holding off because the EFF is filing for a protective order for its clients. If The EFF succeed then Apple fails and is still evil. If the EFF fails, Apple with get their subpoenas and is still evil.
My point being was that if your servers are so accessible where people are browsing the net. Or that you are using your servers for your own personal activities then you deserve what happens to you.
Or more to the point, WTF are you doing browsing websites on your server(s) anyways. This is the same as saying that your server is exploitable to an outlook exploit because your check your mail on your server.
Now if your talking about home servers, or non "mission critical" servers, then who cares, I'm talking about servers in a work/business environment.
From my experience from anyone who takes their jobs seriously, they would never use their servers to browse random websites, in fact they log onto their severs as little as possible. But then again they also don't use their servers to play games, check email, etc.

1) There was no copyright violation from use of the site, this is like saying the bit torrent application violates copyright material because people use it to access the torrent files that this site "links" to.
2) The site had no links to copyright material, or any copyright material on the systems.
3) What isnt allowed? From what I understand what he did was legal, but what the problem is that a very large group of companies did not like what they were doing, so they stopped this, but it dosen't mean its not legal.
4) US COPYRIGHT LAWS ONLY AFFECT THE US! Just because a company in the US has a copyright, that dosent mean someone in a country that does not use the US copyright laws are affected.
I only bring up this last point because from what I think I remember, this site was located in sweeden (which again I thought did not follow us copyright laws).
Yes they have 44 advisories, but how many of these are really a threat?
An IE exploit is (or should not) be a thread on your server. If your doing web browsing on your server then you sould expect nothing but bad things to happen.
I looked though many of these advisories and most of them are local exploites or are related to a local user needing direct access to the OS.
If you have so many people accessing your server directly/locally, then you have alot more problems then any advisories listed in their database.
Windows is as secure as you make it. Same with Linux.
The big difference between the two is that most of the exploits available for windows requires uneducated users to have some type of interaction to infect their system or to have an exploit run.
For example, I do not believe it's the fault of Microsoft if an end user installs spyware when the visit a website. Or an even better example is how an end user will install an application like kazaa on their system, even knowing that it has spyware installed.
Windows 2003 is very secure, and I believe that comparing XP home edition to Linux is very unfair simply because the majority of people who would be running home edition will have no idea how to protect them selves online. A better comparison would be Linux to 2003.
What are the biggest insecurities that people complain about with windows?
Spyware, which in most cases is installed by an end user full well knowing what they are doing, or being tricked, virus's installed via Email (mostly related to end users (latest version of outlook has a lot of default features turned on to remove the use of images to track users (spam) and to not allow attachments)).
And IE exploits run from non trusted sites, again the end user going to sites that they should not be going to if they do not trust them (I think we all know which types of sites run a lot of these types of exploits).
Yes windows is not secure, in the same sense that Linux is not secure, OSX is not secure etc. It's the people who use the OS that make the big difference.
p.s. Yes I know full well about the various worms and exploits like the messaging service and RPC, which had nothing to do with end user interaction, these were big fuckup's on Microsoft side, but with a updated/ patched system Microsoft has been able to make a stable, POPULAR, and secure enough OS that is capable of being user friendly but powerful when needed.
Now does this mean that they were sent 18.5 spams perday, or on average they received 18.5?
Their is a huge difference between what is sent, and what the person will auctially receive in their inbox, be it from the ISP blocking it for some various reason, spam software false emails used on websites (could a person be sent a spam, but not get the spam because it can not read their email address correctly (someoneATsomeplaceDOTcom)).
I only receive about 2 spams aday, this is after my spam software on my PC, outlook doing its thing, and our exchange server, as well as virus protection on server skimming out the bad ones. But im sure I have hundreds a week sent to me.
Company A has "fund" say $50.00. you want your site displayed for 10 days, 5 times a day, so you are only willing to spend 1 dollar an impression. Now lets say company B has $100.00, they want it displayed 10 days, 5 times a day, they get a higher rating, because they are spending $2.00 an impression.
"At this point in the game, It would have to be an absoletly amazing site to take Google out, and I don't think MSN Search is the site thats going to do it."
No it wont, all that will need to be done is to get people who: a) Dont care about what search engine they use, they juse use what they have available.
b) people who just search from the address bar (built in feature in IE).
c) people who are new to computers and will just use the MSN search (start page) that will im sure use the new MS search engine.
d) will use the new built in tool bar search that MS will totally come out with for IE very soon (but not for other browsers).
This is how MS will become dominant, they have ways to offer (or force) customers into using the search engine that other companies (google yahoo) can not.
With the next version of IE (when I guess they will have the built in tool bar) I can guess that the number of uses will jump much higher then expected.
Very few companies are inovated and then stay on top. Yes Microsoft does do alot of things half assed, from my expierences they will move into a market, make a better product (in one way or another AT that time) but not keep it up to day (a good example is IE).
But products (that they sell) have been staying on top for a while, MS SQL server is a good example, it has stayed on the top because it has alot of features other databases dont have, they got it up to the top fast (with features) and havent really touched it lately.
The XBox I think is their best example of how microsoft will get into a market they are late (very late) getting into. I personally belive the Xbox is the best console available currently (im not talking about games, im talking about hardware and features). They came out with an amazing product very late, are climbing to the top, and will release a new system soon. But I belive this is only because they want to get into the "entertainment" industry meaning offer solutions for tv/movies/media/games etc. Your entertainment at home.
What I am getting at is alot of products Microsoft offers for free are great when they come out, bet receive very little support / feature updates, but products they make money on stay on top as long as they keep development going on it.
Its no different then all their other software (xbox windows ie etc). I dont think alot of people would care about them spying on their viewing habits if they belive that it will enhance their expierence.
"no one has the right to publish information that could have been provided only by someone breaking the law"
Naturally these days everything and anything breaks the law, and it comes down to who haves the most money.

The problem is not with them complying with the GPL. They are saying that it does not contain any GPL code, or related to pearPC at all.
If they would just admit that it does have GPL'ed code in the application, that would be a different story.
The company is still swearing up and down that it does not contain any pearPC source code.
Yes many people have found things that are simular (to the point that yes this seems like a license violation), but until the developers can audit the code, or they are taken to court, there is not enough proof (legal proof?) that this is a license violation.

Kryeziu said he's under unfair scrutiny because people refuse to believe the product is real.
"If it isn't, it will ruin my reputation," he said. "I will end up as a bartender. I do not want to be a bartender."
I guess being a theif is better then slinging booze.
Found a good link with info from both cherryos developers and pearlpc developers. here
When did people lose the right to not live any longer? This topic has allways seemed silly to me, if someone wants to die let them. If they can't do it them selves for some reason, there should be some way they can ask for assitance.
Ones right to live is the same right to die.

1)People complain about windows security.
2)Microsoft comes out with sp2 that has a built in firewall.
3)People then complain that the firewall makes it so alot of other firewall/security applications don't work.
4)Then they complain that things like FTP and IIS dont work....
Yes there are many applications that should run on this list, but really people, alot of these applications stop working for very good reasons.
FTP dosent work? configure your firewall. IIS dosent work, configure your firewall! Some of these programs stop working for a reason.
In regards as to why this is happening...
Does this create inovation?
What about jobs, any new jobs? Or less jobs?
How about the customers? This helps them right?
Who exactlly does this help other then a few very large companies with very bad/old business models?
From what I understand, this suffercates inovation, really hurts customers, and causes many people to lose jobs, and many many more over the next couple of years.

Why not charge huge fines for parents who can't raise their children?
Or how about stiffer fines for gang related activities.
Instead of making so many b.s. laws that are just out right silly, why not go to the heart of the problem which in most cases is the family.

" I think it'd go a long way towards getting more people off XP and involved in Open Source"
I agree on some of the things you are saying, but do you honestly think that the general public really gives two shits about open source?
Will they save money?
Its it easier to use?
Can they do everything they need to do for fun and for work?
These are the things people care about, not open source.
Its no different then all their other software (xbox windows ie etc). I dont think alot of people would care about them spying on their viewing habits if they belive that it will enhance their expierence.
