  1. Blue Studios? on Fallout 3 Trailer Available Online · · Score: 1

I think you either mean Blue Sky Studios, or more likely, Blur Studios, Who were the ones who did the Dawn of War cinematic. Blue Sky does more feature length stuff. Horay for using in game assets and all, but that was pretty unsatisfying for me. I don't think it conveyed enough of the fallout world to get me that excited.

  2. Re:Lock Hacking on Germany Declares Hacking Tools Illegal · · Score: 1

'The new rules tighten up the existing sanctions and prohibit any unauthorized user from disabling or circumventing computer security measures to access secure data' Its still fine for you to use tools on your own system to secure it. A locksmith is an authorized user after all. It sounds like it's just going to become harder to get your hands on a good set of lockpicks. I'm not sure if this is going to hurt anyone but admins.

  3. The JT on Jack Thompson Sues Microsoft · · Score: 2, Interesting

I can't figure out whether I want the media to just ignore the guy, or to put a camera on him 24/7. He always seems on the brink of doing something so incredibly awesomely stupid that it will permanently ruin him. One of my favorite things about Jack Thompson is that he ALWAYS references his past accomplishments. "I have done that before successfully as to Best Buy, and I shall do so again as to Microsoft and all retailers---". Instead of firing off pointless lawsuits, that only attempt to bully game makers and retailers, why don't you set up an infrastructure to INFORM non-gamer parents what games are acceptable to buy for your kids. If you are going to attack microsoft, you obviously have the time and money.

  4. Re:Depends on what you use it for on Is Speech Recognition Finally 'Good Enough'? · · Score: 2, Insightful

programming with voice recognition just seems stupid to me. The idea behind voice recognition is to make it easier to write natural speech, such as email, or an essay, or anything else that follows normal speech patterns. Programming is writing so a computer can understand what you want it to do. It involves TONS of punctuation, oddly named keywords and variables (var, int, _InitBlockPosX). Hell, I can barely read my code aloud to someone else without confusing MYSELF, much less confusing the other human. Case in point, if you're trying to use your voice recognition software to write code, you using the wrong tool for the wrong job.

  6. Re:Dumbing down of FPSs on Randomized Maps in Team Fortress 2 Explained · · Score: 1

This isn't making the map completely random, It's just making more routes to memorize. In any case, You could drop any hardcore FPS player into a new map, and they would still dominate players with less skill who are familiar with it.

  7. Former Vaporware on Randomized Maps in Team Fortress 2 Explained · · Score: 1

It makes me so incredibly happy that Team Fortress 2, a game I had written off as dead, is now more exciting than before it dropped off the radar. I guess it is barely the same game though. I think calling it Random Level design is a bit misleading though. It sounds like the next control point you push towards is chosen randomly, and the rest of the level is locked off. I'm sure people have been thinking about this type of game mode for a while. Heck TFC had most of the elements, just not put together into one map. However, to pull this off well, it is going to require some heavy level design.

  8. Ignore! on Is Virtual Rape a Crime? · · Score: 1

While I realize that not all online apps have the feature, but it sounds like Second Life (and other communities) need a better way to ignore people. Since whoever is harrassing you can still bother you when you are off property you can ban them from, you should be able to ignore the player outright. Your client won't display the offending player's Avatar, chat, or any other effects they invoke. This might also prevent some of those spam attacks. The Ignore/Mute features in most games work well enough. Although I've never played it, it sound like Second Life needs to go a step more. In short, if theres a jerk screaming obcenities at you while you walk to the pizza place, just don't render him.

I agree! Between Pandora and http://www.kexp.org/ ( One of the best radio stations I've ever listened to ) I've been exposed to way more bands that I actually enjoy than in the 20 years of commercial radio before that. Oh well, if anything, this will further alienate the RIAA from the buying public. I can't even remember the last time the RIAA did something I approved of.
