Many people (including myself) were worried when VA purchased Andover (and Slashdot). It seemed likely that criticism of VA on Slashdot would become muted, or even non-existent. However, this fear seems not to have come true. This feature seems to be highly critical of VA, and even of Slashdot itself (although/. is not mentioned in the article). While this is not likely to permanently supress fears that CmdrTaco will make editing decisions while looking at his stock portfolio, it seems at least reassuring. Kudos to/.
Well, I would believe this theory if they had said somthing interesting with their story posting. Instead, they just mumbled about how they couldn't talk about anything. I'm not even sure why they can't talk now, especially after it was released to the press hours ago. AFAIK, they are no longer in the post-IPO quiet period, and VA Linux certainly isn't. So they really have no excuse for delaying the most significant story that they will probably publish this week, or even this month, so that they can present it in the context of some mumbo-jumbo about having to keep quiet.
Linux Daily News had Slashdot scooped on this issue by more than an hour, and I submitted this half an hour ago. It was promply rejected. I sort of wonder why Slashdot is now the last news source to get anything, even when it's about them.
Or you can use AbiWord which reads word files (but doesn't export them yet), or wordview (no url handy) which is the library we(abiword) use to import Word.doc.
I'm not sure if this is the correct interpretaiton, but it seemed to me as if Mike had been hung. It was a combination of the position of the head (which sort of lolled to one side) and the noose upstairs in the house that gave me this idea. Again, I'm very much not sure.
A very good movie - well filmed and acted, and the plot was good, in my opinoin. It's hard to have a good plot if they give away end at the beginning, but they managed. If movies can scare you, this one will.
On the machine I'm currently working on, several column-based applications (terminal emulators, DOS programs) seemed to merely increase the smootheness of the fonts. So maybe that's what you're looking for. Not that I'm suggesting you use windows.
I don't know what could be happening, but it's been updated -but not all the way. It's way behind on the numbers of comments. Beats the hell out of me.
What is with the main page? It doesn't display any articles since yesterday afternoon, not even in the slashboxen. I had to search to even find the new articles, like this one. What gives?
Having spent a year and a half (quite possibly the best year and a half) of my life in Berlin, I feel qualified to say that 'Berliners' are certainly not cream-filled, and only qualify as containing jelly in the loosest sense of the word. In reality, the filling is something entirely unlike anything I have ever seen (tasted) in an American donut (I happen to hate the Berliner filling). Just my opinion - the Berliners and Europeans in general make pastries to put the stuff around here to shame.
1- Any program that recives federal funding is considerd to be at least partially at federal program, and therefore cannot violate federal laws, or the constitution. This is why universities in the US (such as Bob Jones) that desire to discriminate based on race recieve no federal funds whatsoever (not even in scholarships).
2- There is a legal idea in the United States known as incorporation. It states that because the 14th amendment (passed in order to require southern states to give newly freed slaves rights) prohibits states from taking away 'life, liberty or property without due process of law,' that they cannot violate 'fundamental' rights (such as the 1st amendment. Most of the rights in the Bill of Rights have been incorporated, and are therefore binding on the states.
3- Most state constituions contain provisions extremely similar to those in the Bill of Rights.
Even better is this spec sheet. The gist is that the system is RAID 5, that it is as big as a house (pictures included) and that the disk drives go up to... 3.36 TB (at least that's how I read it). So maybe Rob wasn't so wrong after all. The ZDnet article says 3 million for 11 TB, so you can't afford it, either.
I don't quite follow your logic here. The ACLU supports the current President (according to you - they don't endore politicans) and therefore they won't criticize congressional efforts to limit your privacy? Where's the connection?
Furthermore, your claims are in direct contradication to the easily availible evidence. Check out this ACLU page for more information on their campaign against this law, and to send a fax to your members of congress uring them to repeal it.
(I also am not sure about your claim of use of the IRS against enemies - what site are you refering to?)

It seems difficult to believe that he could be totally unaware of privacy concerns, unless he had never thought about that sort of thing in his life. In addition, this bill was voted for by a majority of the members of his subcommitte (at least that's how I read the article) and this was after heavy lobbying by the ACLU, among others. So it seems like they knew, but did not particularily care about privacy concerns. I wasn't sure exactly what you were saying about the ACLU, but they should not be criticized, least of all on this issue. They very much support our position of protecting privacy. Finally, I fail to see exactly how this would cut down on legal immigration. It seems to impose no addtional barriers to entry or employment in the United States, and those who legally immigrate should be able to get a card of their own. Maybe the sponsor wants to make employing people without a social security number illegal?
This gets even more absurd - Any search engine worth its salt will neccesarily include links to sites that have pirated ROM's. Therefore, all search engines are in violation of copyright law. Oh wait, that's really dumb. I hope they plan to proofread that FAQ sometime.
Let me preface this by saying that I do not consider myself part of the 'popular crowd. I have been an athlete, but never a good or recognized one. I am an intellectual, in the top 5% of my class. I spend several hours a day on my computer. I have longer hair than any other male student or teacher at school. Yet I am not harassed, and in fact most people at school like me. Many of them would never consider being freinds with me, just as I do not desire their friendship. However, those who make a concoious attempt to be differnt must reconize that being seen as alien is sucess, and not harassment. In addition, if people such as those who hae written before me consider 'jock' and other 'popular' people as far below them as they seem to, they need not look far for at least one of the causes of the lack of friendship. However, the most important point is that those people who killed 13 human beings in cold blood deserve far less sympathy than they are being given. This is for several reasons: 1 - their motivations were concerned not just with ostracism, but with racism. Both the TCM's words and deeds expressed hatred for blacks, hispanics and jews. Anyone wishing to express sympathy for them must first consider that they intentionally acted on the birthday of Adolf Hitler. 2 - they had a significant group of friends. The TCM supposedly ontained up to 30 members. This is more freinds than anyone whould have is they were truly ostracized. These students even went to the prom, identifying themselves with the values that/.ers seem to feel they were fighting against. 3 - they intended to kill people far beyond their high school. They even planned to crash an airplane into New York City. Anyone who would contemplate the slaughter of innocent civilians does not deserve our sympathy. Finally, while the stories posted on/. show gross over-reaction to incidents in schools, anyone expressing sympathy for murdering bigots, or wearing clothing that they must know is identified with killers displays a lack of concern for human life and human emotion that would give an school administrator pause, if not liscence to expel. I am certain that no one who has posted here intended to show sympathy for the opinons that these two men held. However, before expressing our sympathy, we must realize what these men stood for, and what identifying with them means for both ourselves and others. While I would never condone the punishment of students for wearing a trenchcoat of for expressing sympathy, students should realize that the rest of society quite rightly considers these actions to be in very poor taste. I appreciate any commments, or even flames. Sam

Jon Johansen's homepage no longer exists. I don't know if this is a sign of the truth of this story, but all information is useful.
