FUD or not, not everything is is easy for Joe Schmoe to install on Linux as it is on Windows. Besides apt-get or yum, or even cpan, it's a pain in the balls for the home user to install something and get it to work. Hell, even using yum or apt-get, a lot of times you still have to play around with conf files to get something to work. Too many years of being given that, and the average person won't spend the time playing around to get something to work.

  6. Re:And Windows users buy PCs more often on Vista Use Grows as Mac OS X Stays Flat · · Score: 1

The problem with that is that you're taking into account larger businesses. Smaller businesses still employ many old computers, Win2k and XP. Some businesses still use NT or DOS, even more still employ very stable Unix installs since there's no reason to upgrade. So yes, your larger businesses will dump there PC's after EOL, but businesses won't adopt an OS this early in the game, that's just bad planning. I'm sure a good number have been purchased for new installs in said business to migrate over, but I doubt when Vista came out everyone is like "Well, the new OS is out, throw your comps out the window, we're going to fall blindly into Vista". Hell, I'm perfectly content with running my PC that's 5 years old now and it's using XP pro. My workstation is maybe a year newer, our newest PC in the facility is 2 years old. Everything is running XP pro or Win2k (mostly XP pro). Any of the systems we sell to EU's are XP pro, and the software we sell for businesses hasn't even been fully tested with Vista yet, and it doesn't look like it will be certified for at least a year. Any of the software I have to deploy here is the same way, non of it is Vista certified.

Are you kidding? You're not fighting with them from Day 1, it's no different than buying from any other PC vendor. Except in this case, you take the 2 secs to install your OS from scratch, and last I checked, most other PC vendors only offer Windows anyways... I personally think you're screwing yourself over on a PC when you buy from Dell anyways (unless it's a laptop). This is how Dell is playing the game, sometimes they have sweet deals for a good cheap PC for like $300, and wow, it comes with Vista, damn for that price I could build the same comp, but no OS, and I would still have to format the drive....

That's true if you're looking at TCO for a business. If said business wanted to implement Ubuntu as a workstation, it would still be cheaper to purchase the Ubuntu system from Dell, regardless of paying more for less hardware, simply because of the time the IT department would spend installing Ubuntu and removing Vista... Also, you have support through Dell if need be, which even the best IT staff, still needs tech support sometimes.

For a home user, I'm going to obviously purchase the Vista Dell box, and put Ubuntu on it, simply because I know what I'm doing, and I get better hardware for less money. Then, on top of that, if I *shudder* like Vista, I have a license...

To an extent I greatly agree with you. The concepts of purchasing a license and basically MS having you by the balls when it comes to loading your OS, and what you do with it is fundamentally wrong. But, at least for myself, I haven't run Windows 98 since I "upgraded" to XP, I have also never had an issue with reactivating my machine, even after multiple re-installs, having to call the number, and moving to new platforms. I think that if you're doing it with legit intent, and it gets screwed up, the user has done something wrong. When it comes time for me to decide if I want to goto Vista (if), I will more then likely not look back as I haven't with moving to XP from 98. Any of my old systems run some form of Linux, and it will more than likely stay that way. Once MS gets to the point of not supporting or activating XP, I doubt I'll be relying on a system that uses it. That being said, I can't see them stop re-activating XP machines even if they stop supporting it. Unless it's in a move to solely prop up their next cash cow or they go out of business. I can see a far amount of lawsuits that would ensue. But we know they're capable of a lot. I look at the OS in this case as I do hardware. I plunked down a far amount of money for my old Nvidia TNT2 Riva, but it's been past it's time, time to move on down the road... Sure, it still works for some applications, and serves the purpose for the most minimal tasks, but like Win 98 it's obsolete.
