You can actually download a WM6 app that turns your phone into a wireless router. It provides dhcp and wireless security (only WEP) and gives you a 3G data connection. I am with O2 Uk and they tell you not to tether in the contract, but as long as you keep usage sensible they will never know. My sim only contract with 600mins/1200text and unlimited we add-on is £19.75/month.

If there was a version of the Touch HD running android and an offline navigation app for it, I would buy it tomorrow. I was disappointed that the Magic's screen size is smaller than the iPhone's and even though it is quite a bit bigger than my Touch Diamond, it has HALF the resolution (320x480 vs 480x640).

I find switching off 3G makes my smartphone's battery last much longer. Are you saying that accessing local memory (which is becoming cheaper and more plentiful by the day) uses more battery than downloading it all again and again for the same roads..? I a similar set of roads every day to work but always have the GPS on in case I forget to turn off the motorway in time. Local storage is far more practical. Igo UK maps take up little storage (micro SDHC devices can now hold 32Gb I think) and full worldwide maps still don't take up much space. A Tomtom or Igo like app is also a barrier for me getting an Android. I want to use maps her and abroad without worrying about dataplans and reception. Especially as it is always the middle of nowhere, no reception, no signpost areas that I seem to get lost in.

They might be intelligent and not like this fact, they may wish their country to be autonomous, but if they actually believe that they are technically not British and not European then they are wrong. As would be a French or German citizen thinking that they are not European, or an Indian believing that they are not Asian.

We British do consider ourselves to be European. A minority of xenophobes in Britain consider themselves not to be European (or realise they are and would prefer not to be) and an even smaller number don't even consider themselves (or want to be) part of Britain - they are Scottish, Irish, Welsh or English in their eyes. I consider myself Scottish, British and European, and almost everyone I have met with an intelligence regard themselves in the same way.

Exactly. I remember a Radio4 interview with the then top guy at the Bank of England. He loved the challenges of his job, and have obviously got to the top of his profession. He made the point that however much you love your job, one has to get perspective through past-times to enjoy it fully. This may relate more to non-technical roles, although I feel that it is right enough. He said that his past time was fly fishing: making a tiny bundle of feathers dance on the water 20 yards away required so much concentration that it would allow him to clear his mind of all work related problems, thus gaining the perspective to do his job properly.

I got that, and added that LPG is also petroleum based, but that wasn't the only point being made. My response was suggesting that a car manufacturer can't say they have phased out petroleum powered vehicles if they are producing diesel vehicles and there is no useful infrastrucure for supplying biodiesel fuel. If a company was to produce only diesel powered vehicles today and claim that, as they can be run on vegetable oils, that their vehicles are not petroleum powered this would be a pointless statement as almost everyone would just fill up with regular diesel.

Isn't LPG is petroleum based? I guess that diesel engines could be said not to require petroleum based fuels as they can run on vegetable oils, but in that respect the "Phasing out Petroleum powered cars" statement is less impressive; I doubt most of us will have easy access to biodiesel by 2015.

Quite right. Using Ad/Remove programs provides 99% of the software you are looking for (and about a million packages you didn't know you needed but now can't do without) with an incredibly simple search line, click-to-install procedure. Easier for a granny than searching around the internet for a program, deciding on which OS, which language, which version etc. Once installed it automatically updates itself. It has a nice textual description of what it does. If you really can't find the app you need you may have to look on the internet, but it is rare, and when you do there is usually a deb which instantly brings up your package installer, which handles all dependencies (and doesn't even ask you where you want to install it). Could it really be any simpler?
