PDAs are cheap, increasingly ubiquitous, and well capable to running games of the complexity which kept me playing over the last 10 years. X-Com Enemy Unknown anyone?

This book specifically addresses the problem you describe, complete with equations. Once you correct the maths in it, the results are very good. Metacol use similar maths in their die/paint colour quality control programs, I used these equations to produce a similar product until the company folded...
I just bought a netgear MR314 (broadband router with wireless) I was surprised to find that its security features consisted of DNAT port forwarding (via IP on a DHCP internal subnet you can't bind to ether MAC addresses!), but no real protocol or port filtering capability. A friend of mine has the non-wireless (or wired I guess;-) version of this and it does seem to have more firewall features.
My recommendation - fine for low risk users (I'm keeping mine) - other users should consider a real firewall
Whilst this is a nice joke, a language which melds the best of smalltalk like languages and perl does exist - it is called Ruby. Ruby is very symetrical, neat and is taking over from perl in Japan.
I'd love to. Unfortunately this is not something I have the time or hardware to do at home, and I don't think I'd be able to persude my boss to let me do it at work;-( If anyone wants to donate me a 64bit sparc and a few 10s of k$ to pay the bills with....
There is a methodology called Extreme Programming which introduces a concept called Pair Programming. A technique like Pair Programming would I think be useful for this kind of problem. Certainly, when I get a block like this I try to talk to other people about the problem - often the simple act of explaining it can crystalize my thought.
Re: NT vs Samba Not really. I'd like to do both. I know it is possible (I've had it confirmed by someone who replied to another trawl I did, but he couldn't tell me how to do it as it is a company secret of his...)
How does clearclase add a new network type to the brower ? I've never seen a samba capability which does that.
Can anyone of you SMB gurus tell me how to do loopback mounts of SMB pseudo file systems ? Clearcase does this so it must be possible, but lots of trawling through the NBT and NetBT docs have just left me totally confused.
My issues are 1) *SMBSERVER is a unique name 2) ClearCase shows up as a different type of network in the browser - how do you do this ? 3) I want to have an NT box running an application share back to itself from that application as well as exporting normal shares
Disclaimer - although I work for Trilogy Development this question is for me and is not connected with work.
This is a real piece of cake with NFS, but seems to be soooo difficult under NT that I must be missing something ?
Ok, so I don't agree with everything he says all the time, but this discussion is obviously of interest to some people, and he has at least started a discussion. Like it or not, promotion of thought is a useful thing to do. Without people like Katz the world would be a much more boring place.
"Rumour - believe all you hear, your world will be more interesting" (paraphrase, John Brunner, HipCrime vocab in "Stand On Zanzibar")
I seem to remember a film (name slips my shattered mind) in which everyone was hobbled down to the 'average' - dancers who were better had to wear ankle weights, thinkers wore a mind control device to 'dumb-them-down'. Turns out the whole society was being run by 'intelligent' free thinkers who decided what was best for everyone. (Kind of like the Nanny-state philosophy). Of course, all the _real_ free thinkers die in the end.;-) I'd strongly recommend John Brunner's fiction books 'Shockwave Rider' and 'Stand on Zanzibar' (except for the naff ending) to anyone who is interested in this kind of stuff.
The IBM JDK is an implementation of Java Platform 2 version 1.3. This is the absolute latest spec, and is so new that the SUN JDK hasn't been released in FCS format yet.
JDK 1.2 was re-named Java Platform 2 as part of the re-arrangement of the Enterprise, Standard and Micro editions. See SUN's Java site for more information on this, and the differences between the versions.
IBM are definitely at the head of the queue for this one !
I'm looking forward to being able to use some critical Java Platform 2 features, and remember this is the enabling technology for Enterprise Java Beans...
A recent (and misguided IMHO) court case in the UK ended with Demon Internet (an ISP) being held liable for a libelous usenet post originating from one of their home customers. Demon were ordered to pay a large (I believe about 400K - but this is from memory so don't quote me) settlement. Demon have argued for common carrier status, but don't yet have it. I think the reason for this is that the Government don't understand the technical difficulties in monitoring the volume of traffic that passes though Demon's systems. To link this comment in - I don't think FreeNet stand a cowboy's chance in a nuclear explosion of getting common carrier status. Asmodeus
How does this system compare to Hyper-G ? Hyper-G is interesting because of the highly efficient P-Flood alogorythm used to distribute updates in a push fashion to other servers.
Ross Andersons' Cambridge crypto group have theorised a Steganographic distributed information system along these lines called The Eternity Service. Worth a look.
Whilst I love Bristol, I found it impossible to get a job in the Bristol area on more than 40K permenent. I'm now moving to Austin, Texas as this will effectively triple my salary. Contracting in Bristol tops out at about 60K - not really worth it, especially considering that 150 miles away in London 100K is easy to get as a _permi_ let alone a contractor (London is a horrible place to live..I did 6 months in the square mile - never again!)
The cost of living is higher if you live in Clifton (Bristol), but you do get to get blasted in the Corry Tap;-)
The biggest problem I see in the job market in the UK is differentiating yourself from the scum who lie on their CVs. I've seen CVs claiming 8 years experience in Java (!). Managers also don't seem to understand the value of certain skills in the computing area.
Job agencies also seem to always overquote salary, and hassle you continually with naff jobs...
I personally would never pay a recent graduate a large salary as I believe experience is incredibly important in computing. A few years of making mistakes can do the world of good...
Does anyone know of a company selling just the case (+screen) for a "lunchbox" format ATX2 ?
I've seen lots of systems with them, but no-one will sell me just the case ! I need a high power luggable system built around components which I already have.
Check out Fresco
uuups. That should be Modula-3 not modula-2
..and is a very old technique.
Java, Modula2, Lisp and smalltalk all allow
this.
RTFM
Thanks !
;-)
Just bought one. Looks luuuvely
