I works for the samsungs and I can tell you that what we are saying makes sense really.

The new OLED screens are going to help protect the users by proactivly blocking all content except for the new type of disk that we haven't figured out yet. Instead of the BR disks policy of not playing on screens except for HDCP compatible screens, we are going to do things the other way around this time. The consumers will be protected from viewing content not made by my company samsungs!

So, you wont have to worry about anything like playing non-samsung content accidentally again.

Also, we guarantee no one will ever break this DRM, its so strong!! We also promise that the new disks will be compatible with other previous players (we promise! no really, we do!).

    Easy solution:

    1. All persons shall, by default, non-tracked persons.
    2. Any person may request to be on the "tracked" list.

This goes for phone marketers and spammers.

Would you like to sign up to be tracked or spammed? Be my guest.

(This can be solved through technology. I'm working on it.)

I have used both SAN and NAS. Here is the quick and dirty difference:

SAN - requires third party software to run. It gives slightly more options to the user, but it is not very interoperable. SAN software must be supported by the operating system.

NAS - is highly interoperable. Just type the UNC name and presto, you are viewing files. You can map the entire drive or select folders.

People have been making error correcting SAN boxes for ages, mostly in the form of RAID arrays. I wouldn't get another SAN box even if they were giving them away. Ok, if they were coming with hard drives inside, I would take them and rip the drives out.

If you don't have time to fool around with weird software, get NAS. It works.

I believe the author has some confusion about open source. Software development companies have positions on the openness of their own code. Most other companies just want software that works for a good price.

I suppose some software development companies "object" to open source code (especially to opening up their own code), because it threatens their business model.

On a side note, the nice thing about searching for "open source" applications as opposed to "freeware" applications, is that open source applications do not have trial periods. Try searching for "freeware tone generator" on Google and see how many trialwares there are. Now try searching sourcefoge for the same thing.

    I hate trialware.

His point is that, while 'everyone' seems to think that copying information is the same as stealing that information. This same group of individuals do not understand the difference between stealing hard drives, "cutting and pasting" the content (such that the original is destroyed), and copying the file from one persons hard disk to another's.

In reality, file sharing is the equivalent to, for a car example, a ford owner collaborating with a non ford owner; helping him to make a copy of the owner's ford. In the car example, this is a difficult task to accomplish, as most people do not have the tools to copy a ford. It happens that in the computer world the copying of a file is a task of trivial effort.

By informing us that it is illegal for the populace to be copying these files between hard disks, we are reminded that the law makers are among the group of individuals who lack the understanding outlined in my first paragraph.

Suspend? As in standby or hibernate?

As for standby mode, lots of people use this, however the PC is still "on". Removing the power supplied would cause a loss of the session and any non-saved work. The battery on a laptop will run down on standby mode, as the RAM must be kept in its state.

As for hibernate, well most people don't know about it, even younger people (because its default setting is 'disable'). Your PC is actually turned off during hibernate, as the RAM is stored on the hard disk. I use it for my laptop, and it is a big time saver. My desktop does not hibernate properly due to some specific processes.

The biggest improvement in speed you can give the average PC is to give it more than enough RAM (2-3GB for XP) and disable page filing.

What will this do, you ask?
    1. Start up time improved, for the OS as well as for other programs, as a significant reduction in writes to the hard disk (to the page file) will be made during application loading.
    2. No more waiting for programs that have been idle for a while in the task bar to slowly draw. All windows are kept in memory. All other memory recall is faster and less "crunchy"
    3. Your hard disk will be used less due to caching of reads and writes.
