Agreed, I can't see why this man is being called a victim, he had child porn, and last time I checked, child porn is illegal. It would make sense that he is to be treated with the full extent of the law for what he did.

What makes it worse is that the people who installed the drive are being made out to be the bad guys here, it said they looked for files they could use to test the drive, they weren't randomly looking through his pictures, they most likely just searched for any media files so they could try burn them, saw child porn and reported it, like any responsible person would do.

Ironically the main reason I started using Linux was that it, not Windows, would work with my soundcard, and I was lucky with my printer, I just had to click a few buttons to get it working in Kubuntu (unlike on Windows where it took 2 reboots, and installation of a load of software packaged with driver and a complete crash). Though I agree that hardware support is one of the main reasons people don't stick with Linux (and wireless is becoming the new printer nowadays). I see no reason why companies don't release specifications of their hardware, especially since there are so many Linux developers willing to make a driver for free.

If it is not cost effective to support those 6%, then yes, they should. Tell me, should they spend the same amount on 6% of their customers as they did on the other 94%?

What makes you think you and your choice of operating system is more important and deserves a bigger share of the money and resources than the other 95% of the population? What makes you think you are worth 19,400 times than 95% of the rest of the population?

Do you see the depths of your selfishness yet?

More importantly, if you had RTFA, you would have seen where they decided to support the majority of their visitors first and then add support for the rest later.

Now, stop being a self-centered asshole. Well then shouldn't Linux users be required to pay less tax so that it doesn't go to BBC? Or is that unreasonable? (yes that's a rhetorical question) Is it selfish to want to watch something you partially funded with having to go and buy Windows?

Also I don't recall anywhere stating that the BBC was aiming to make a profit, I DO recall that they aim to help make their programmes accessible to as much people as possible. Currently they're ignoring 6% of people. and the fact that it'd take £1000+ to port to Linux might make sense, except that the majority of the code would only need small changes, and they should be able to fairly easily identify the parts that need to be redone easily if they followed good design.
So really it comes down to something a bit more like £1000000 to develop for Windows, another 10-20000 to develop for Linux and Mac, unless you're suggesting they code the whole thing from scratch for each platform?

From one perspective (although undoubtedly an unpopular one here on /.) a free copy of Windows is worth more than a free copy of Mandriva.

After all, it vastly increases the range of applications that are now available for them to use.

Like I said, it may not be popular here, but I can see how this deal could be viewed as good for both parties by both parties... It gives them access to more apps and all while they're in school learning to use it, but when they leave school and they have to start paying the fee like the rest of us, do you really think they'll think "Thank god I learned to use MS instead of Linux".
Maybe this is acceptable where you live, where everyone goes to school happily, then graduates and gets a nice office job. But this is a developing country and these kids can't afford to start paying for software (the ones that get computers that is)

If suddenly everything's improved and all Nigerians are able and willing to pay for Windows instead of getting a free alternative then please correct me and I'll admit my fault

Either the submitter can not read, can not think, or is a trolling fanboy. In any instance, the submission is inaccurate. So what about the other 6% of users? If 94% used Windows you think they should ignore 6%? Considering it's the general public who FUND the BBC, it's pretty much the same as a company refusing to acknowledge 6% of its shareholders
