Beats paying a grand for every edition you have to throw away when it becomes dated. Beats buying a Kindle. Beats paying for data on cellular. I might buy one just because you're not excited.
How chauvinistic! But of course, who but a human would think that a human's mind would be so powerful that the mere observation of a revealing "secret" of the universe would be a threat to it?
Honestly, this is beyond illogical. It may be a fact that the universe thinks and is aware of itself, but to think that it would be protecting itself from humanity learning about it in some way is ludicrous when presented with the infinite number of other ways it could restrict humans from discovering the Higgs boson.
Let's instead consider a more plausible scenario: The LHC is an enormous undertaking that goes beyond any attempt of artifice made before involving particle collision and it is very likely it will have many setbacks.
It really isn't a big deal. The mistake was made, the world has the opportunity to learn from it and the economic impact was probably small but scalable enough to take seriously.
Now if it happened again I'd hope action were taken... don't be so vengeful, SuperBanana!
Users have to have some kind of medium to install other browsers through. If not IE, then what? What could Microsoft offer that isn't Microsoft-Something? Would people be more comfortable having Microsoft tangle with the GPL?
I hate Microsoft but I'm calling a duck a duck... This isn't a motivation to open Microsoft up more, it's one more excuse to grill them for all the things they've already done.
Even if the gameworld doesn't take place in real world, but lets say future, it can still count for the user experience. It improves the scifi experience more when player can think "oh McDonalds is still around"...
It's not like Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize means I can't get it now! I won't take it personally in the least.
I am hoping Obama does do some good but he hasn't done a whole Hell of a lot yet. It's kind of an insult to his credibility that the reason he got the prize was for being President Not-Bush.
What sucks in discussing politics is that people still believe there's really a difference between the Republicans and Democrats that are actually in office.
Well, duh, there's obviously a difference! One's called "Republican" and the other "Democrat".
Really, though, Dems and Reps are the least of the trouble in politics. What makes politics difficult for the critical thinking is the density of ethical questions surrounding every subject. We see people fighting over who's right and wrong when it's really a battle of "everything's fine but people have different desires that can not simultaneously fill the same place".
Money is power. Microsoft has a lot of money. Look at The Church of Scientology for reference of what money and influence can do.
They really can't FORCE you to do anything.
That's the funny thing about proprietary software, it can do all sorts of things under your nose and you might never know it.
We're not talking about genocide here, lets keep things in some sort of sane perspective.
You are correct.
You can end MS "tyranny" very easy. Stop using their products.
It is impossible for me to stop using Microsoft software. I would never be able to see a doctor or participate in the healthcare system, I could not have the protection of the country's military and law enforcement, I could not work or study at the college I'm at now... Just because Microsoft isn't sitting happily in my home computer doesn't mean I can go without using their software.
You don't actually have to have them to survive.
This isn't about survival.
You can, in fact, never use a computer and still survive and function.
That is very true, but computers have benefitted science and biology greatly. I may not be alive now without them, I may never have been born, especially because both of my parents profited greatly in fields involving computers.
You have to be really fucking spoiled to make the comparison you just made, I'd hate to see you having to deal with an actual problem in your life.
You, from your statements, are completely out of touch with reality, just like Stallman himself.
You know nothing about me or my life and your logic is fallacious.
You've elevated crap like 'licensing agreements' to the same level as 'genocide'. You treat Microsoft as if they've detonated a nuclear bomb in the heart of a peaceful city.
I believe you have failed to fully grasp the full extent of the meaning of "Humanity" and what being responsible to it entails.
You sir, need a tall glass of perspective and soda.
I have small eyes and a small mind, but I've willingly shared the view of other people and attempted to expand my general understanding of what the world is. I suggest you do the same.
I'm glad someone realized, by the looks of the other replies to my comment I'm about to get e-lynched.
Really, though, I do hate Microsoft and they do perpetuate some extremely counter-beneficial ideas for the sake of their own persistence. It's natural to want to survive, but the people who are Microsoft need to step back and consider where their habits may take society.
Microsoft isn't only a corporation, it's a paradigm. Their memetic tyranny is twofold in attraction of members who have the same beliefs of proprietary software and the indoctrination of new employees to follow the way of the four-color panes.
There's only so many crimes against humanity anyone can commit before they can no longer be redeemed. In the view of Stallman and many, many others, Microsoft crossed the line long before the world really knew who they were.
There's no changing the connotation of Microsoft's name, they must be... supplanted.
Beats paying a grand for every edition you have to throw away when it becomes dated. Beats buying a Kindle. Beats paying for data on cellular. I might buy one just because you're not excited.
I think they should have stuck with the one... since the universe is apparently blocking our attempts from discovering its secrets.
How chauvinistic! But of course, who but a human would think that a human's mind would be so powerful that the mere observation of a revealing "secret" of the universe would be a threat to it?

I'm disappointed to see how many people beside you have already pointed this out.
Man, this whole thing is really depressing. I've never had an article AND the comments on /. make me feel so down and disappointed with Humanity.
A marketing stunt.
5 digits... This is such a sad day for me.
Install Kubuntu and just tell them it's 7.

the jokes just write themselves...
You really ought to make a /. account and make that your sig.
You're frightening me.
The blow costs money, the copy of Windows costs them whatever the fuck they want to pay.
The Windows 7 Launch Party, it's like the birthday party for the loved one you adore who has a terminal illness and is unlikely to see another year.
Even if the gameworld doesn't take place in real world, but lets say future, it can still count for the user experience. It improves the scifi experience more when player can think "oh McDonalds is still around"...

You might feel quite the fool were a civil war to erupt, especially over software.
I ain't sayin' it is, but I ain't sayin' it ain't.
They ARE JUST A SOFTWARE COMPANY!
The President is just a person.
They can't actually ruin your life.
Money is power. Microsoft has a lot of money. Look at The Church of Scientology for reference of what money and influence can do.

Things are just falling apart all over!
On the contrary; things are falling together.
Fourth Law of Thermdynamics: There's always more entropy then you think there is, even when you take into account the Fourth Law of Thermodynamics.
I still wouldn't worry about the heat death of the universe, though, unlike those in the aforementioned link.
You forgot to recursively account for the fourth law, you fool! The death of the universe will now be exponentially sooner every moment that passes!

My suggestion was he may not have the choice to remain at 3.0.1
