For one. This is not just Robs site, (infact it isnt his site anymore, its Va Linux's site, but thats beyond the point) its a community site. And as a member of the slashdot community I have a write to express my comments and concerns about the direction or whatever of the website. This website isnt Robs little posting board where he can put whatever he damned well pleases. It is a professional, commericial, new source. We have just as much right to complain as if I had a next door neighbor disturbing our neighbor hood. We can, and do, complain to tv stations etc.. about things we feel is inappropriate, and action does take place. What makes all you guys out there that continously say "its not your website, shuddup" think that we dont have a right to comment. This is not a personal website, and if it was, we still have the write to comment on it, doesnt mean things have to change, but we still have the right.

Read these post, its fairly obviously, because you get lots of idiots that get all paranoid about people portscanning them. Doing it secretely possibly reduces the amount of people who go crazy because they think they are under attack.
Thier are alot of legitamate uses for this data. For one, internet topology maps. There are multiple internet mapping websites that scan the internet and creat a graphs and maps of the data they find. Maybe if you read weblogs, that might be were you guys have seen it before. Interesting how Slashdot not long is very fast at posting up to date news, and when they do alot of boring crap no one cares about. I remember when it first became Slashdot after Chips and Bits that I would actually read every post and every comment throughout a day. Because they were all interesting!! Now I dont even read completely throught the summaries on the main page because alot of the articles are complete crap. Like, "Ask Slashdot: On DDoS, SPAM, Telemarketing And Harrasment?" What kinda junk is that? That has been discussed on slashdot have a dozen times before. Its generic boring news that belongs on a uninformative incorrect CNN.com article or something. Processor Reviews and Water Cooled Laptops deserve there own post? Granted, thats some cool stuff, but If I wanted to read about power user stuff like overclocking and processor reviews I would head over to Toms Hardware guide. Its generic news that everyone and there grandmas dog is carrying. Bring bang the interesting and unique content.
And all this after they were bought out for a few million, and then Va Linux essential payed another billion for Slashdot. Cause really, sure there is Freshmeat and the other sites on Andover.net, but Slashdot is the bulk of all there visits. Even if they do visit other sites, they also visit slashdot. So Slashdot was basically bought out for a billion dollars. Use that money to make a better site. In fact, I havent seen the money change anything at slashdot. No inprovement, no new features, nothing. Update, or become like Yahoo.
I dont mean to say bad things about slashdot. I general like it, and always have. I just think it has declined quality wise in the last year. Hope it gets better not worse.

Essentially it creats you an account on there linux box and through there modified VNC java viewer you can use linux from any machine with net access. MyFreeDesktop.com I believe is another one. Halfbrain.com i think is another web based app company that is working on a kick ass spread sheet program. The evhead weblog has some links today in regards to web based applications like that, www.evhead.com. Posted direct from SXSW interactive. My personal favorite is ThinkFree.com's Thinkfree Office. It gives you a remote desktop using java, and it has an excellent Wordpreccesor, Spreadsheet, Presentation program. They rival Microsoft Word and Corel Wordperfect. In fact, they are almost exact clones of the products in the Microsoft Office Suite. They even can deal with the formats of office. Its must excellent, you get 20 free megs of workspace , and you can type and edit your documents anywhere with a java enabled browser. How can you claim that you own the trademark and it should be given to you. Its a music site on the web, thus Music Web. You cant trademark stuff like that. That would be like Ford sueing me because I bought Car.com or CarDealer.com or something of the sort. Or a domain like SoftwareLinks.com. The domain name should of never been to arbitration in the first place, and certainly should not of been given to the person who filed the complaint. I can just see it now. This is as silly as the company who tried to steal earth.com because they claimed they owned the trademark to Earth. Whatever.

I personally dont care if he squats domains or not. Personally, I own tons of domains. I dont consider it squatting. I am not going out there and registering domains of other peoples trademarks. Just domains that I one day could use as a legit business. I am not trying to decieve people and redirect them to my website. I think thats the big difference between buying domains and squating domains. Squatting has to do with buying other peoples trademarks to confuse people. There is nothing wrong with buying tons (even thousands of domains) otherwise, that sound cool, and could be used.
Regardless, I dont care about the past of this charecter. Mp3.com is one of the best sites on the internet. I whole disagree with anyone that says most of there stuff sucks. I really have never heard a band on mp3.com (in a music category I like, which is primarily everything buy Jazz, Country, World, etc..) that sucks. THe only ones I have heard that sucked was because of audio quality, not the music. Their electronica section just rules. So does alot of there AltRock/Pop area. Granted if you are a teenie bopper who likes to listen to backstreet boys (actually, there is some stuff you would like) and other Top 10 bands you might not find what your looking for.

They are under no obligation to show the source to the linux community, in fact, I wouldnt doubt if they didnt. By only showing the source to other companies to build on, and release there own version (which is still windows), they are helping windows grow, and directly compete with linux.
