In my university, we had to write a process manager, and add timeslicing, semaphores etc... Some people had very little experience of C, so the program was split into smaller chunks. Although we didn't actually create the process manager as such, we learnt the basic algorithms for the process manager, using a text input file and output what would be run at each clock cycle. You could also implement the Unix process priority system, giving priority to certain processes.
We also in the following semester created a virtual memory manager.
Yeah but you can wear the Pal round your neck, while your jogging etc. They aren't really that bulky, and everything built together is better than all the separate things, i.e. Palm, Mobile Phone, Mp3 player
The main point I was trying to get across wasn't about the processor, as the WinCE handhelds seem to decompress mp3s OK. It was about the size of RAM you get. 8Mb is nowhere near enough space for anyone realistically considering an mp3 player. You would probably get about 2 songs encoded at a decent rate , and then you would'nt be able to use the palm for anything else.
P.S I am writing this on a Javastation, so if it doesnt come out as expected blame SUN.
The Third Edition of Java in a Nutshell is quite a good beginners book. But dont try the 1st or 2nd editions, they require you to know a bit of C or imperative programming. The Third Edition is much nicer for newbies.
IMHO This is probably one of the most poorly researched articles at Tom's Hardware.
The major case that blurted out to me was the comment on the DreamCast, probably cos I was just playing it a minute ago. In it he states that DirectX compatability is one of the reasons why the DreamCast has the wide plethora of games it currently has. I totally disagree with this, and AFAIK all the games on the Dreamcast have so far been written using Sega's own libraries and not DirectX. The DirectX library's haven't turned out to be very good on the DreamCast and many of the traditional games developers who have tried using them have found that Sega's own development software is much better. Also AFAIK the X-Box by Microsoft is still not officially in development and Microsoft have denied all knowledge of it.(I may be wrong on this point as I haven't checked about it for a while). Tom's Hardware also seems to be a bit contradictory as one of the recent articles on the Athlon chipset still describes the Intel chipset as much better than even the new VIA one, and one of the major area's and reasons why Intel's processors are performing much faster. If anyone has installed an Athlon they will also note the HUGE heatsink required for it. the Intel's don't seem to require as big a heatsink. Also even the idea that Intel would abandon the CPU market because of a little pressure from AMD seems laudable. When the Cyrix processor was released with a much better pipeline and much cheaper than the Intel, Intel released the MMX instruction set, and simply created a much faster internal core for the Pentium. ensuring that they regained their dominance in the market.
The Author's comment's about the PC dying a small death, and being replaced by thin-client type machines and games consoles is also flawed in a major way. How many people have tried using a TV as a monitor. It's pathetically poor, and typing a document is a strain on the eyes. I doubt that companies and people would end up typing documents on TV Screens. Until much clearer display screens and input methods (Speech recognition) are developed, I don't think anyone shoudl assume that the PC will die a small death.
If anyone could tell us anymore about the author, or perhaps the author himself would reply and post his comments it would be very interesting. I tried to get the author's details from the website, but the contacts page doesn't mention Van Smith at all.
I personally think the Athlon is way better than the Pentium III, and also bear no grudges against Tom's Hardware, which is one of the few sites including Slashdot that I read daily. I usually find the articles there very informative and well balanced, but personally don't beleive this article was.
DISCLAIMER: This article is undoubtedly biased and opinionated, and in case anyone from LinuxOne is reading, the views in this article are mine alone and not those of Andover.net/Slashdot/Va Linux.
Actually the professor who started the project is still there. Also the work is still continuing with other students and lecturers. Just because some of the original peole left doesn't mean the work will stop.
Here's a link to some work on Asynchronous processors at the University of Manchester, UK (Place where the first computer was built 51 years ago) Really cool stuff;) Amulet Processors
I am sorry if my words were misunderstodd, down to my poor writing skills. What I was trying to say was that out of all the Office suites on any system, I think that Microsoft Office is the best of them. Others may have there own oppinions but I am certain there are people who agree with me, which is much of the reason why StarOffice tries so hard to emulate Microsoft Office. One of the major features constantly stated about StarOffice, is how it's compared to Microsoft Office, even on Slashdot.
The comments you posted are all debatable and mainly depend on personal preference. There are many who would disagree with you, and in the same manner there are many people who would disagree with me. I am simply pointing out that not all Microsoft stuff is bad. Saying that logitech is better, doesn't mean that the Microsoft products are bad. I personally disagree with your choices, but it is all down to personal preference and I am certain there are people who read Slashdot, who like Microsoft hardware and also Microsoft Office.
Microsoft stuff isn't all that bad. How many of you will have a Microsoft Mouse/Intellimouse? How many of you have a Microsoft Keyboard? How many of you use Microsoft Office?
Not all Microsoft stuff is bad, but most of you don't want to admit it.
I'm not saying that all of their stuff is good, but some of the hardware they make is pretty good at the moment. i.e. Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick Microsoft Intellimouse Microsoft Force Feedback wheel
Microsoft Office is also the best office package available on any system.
I just feel a lot of people on Slahsdot just don't want to admit that some of their stuff is any good, even if they are using it.
Another case of the university acting as a business rather than a university. It should be helping students not denying them services, which would save the students money. Students have enough money problems as it is. Surely any service which saves them money is less stressful for the students.
Java should be a standard, not just something anybody can change to suit them. If everyone changed Java, there would be nopoint in having it. Hopefully this ruling will teach Microsoft about Standards.
This is the same Microsoft who cried, when AOL wouldn't allow the MSN messenger to communicate with AOL Instant Messenger.
Just use ICQ. (Although that's owned by AOL aswell) ;(
I'm not saying I'm not a newbie. And maybe it's just that I don't want to get flamed by people like you that I give a Hotmail account which I no longer use.
Being a newbie doesn't mean you can't use make. I never said that I couldn't use make. I said perhaps make one which is easier for newbies to use.
Why r u trying to flame? Got nothing better to do? I simply made a suggestion.
Maybe your just too clever to read or something. All I said was that someone could make a version of Make which would make it easier for newbies to programming to use.
I never suggested I couldn't use Make either. I just suggested make something which is easier for newbies to programming to use.
Maybe you should also try and register and not continue going around flaming as an Anonymous Coward.
All AOL seem to do is use proprietary software for almost everything, yet they're still one of the biggest ISPs in America, and the world. Another case of an IT company taking advantage of unsuspecting customers
The University Im at uses redhat 6.1, so I'd presume that they had the latest version of Lesstif (unsure) I didnt think Redhat supplied Nedit. Also where can I get the latest version of nedit from. Is it easy to install, for newbies =). Who have just installed the latest distro of Redhat Debian Corel? KDE editor I found was simple to install, and use when programming, for parsing. I couldn't even find a copy of Nedit (probably my fault:( ) I was just pointing out my few gripes with the program which I suspect most ppl would have. Sorry if I offended anyone.:(
Why not fit breath test meters on a car so it wont start unless you're below the limit. It would probably reduce the amount of Drunk drivers on Britains roads.
But it could also be fooled. A passenger could take the test. But if the passengers stupid enought ot let someone over the limit drive, they probably should be locked up.
I live in the UK and was wondering whether anyone knows how UCITA would affect other countries, if it was accepted.

Still probably won't get an mp3 player for the palm pilot then.
I'll just have to wait for the Ericsson T28 addon.

Maybe this certain fellow is clever enough not to give out his proper address, and get spammed.
Also remember who the coward is.
Make a new 'Makefile' which is easier to understand for us newbies to programming.

I use nedit at university, and it seems to have the most annoying bugs:
:)
i.e.
CTRL-S crashes the program sometimes (This is the shortcut for saving);(
The shortcut keys also dont seem to work with Num-Lock on.
Very annoying.
Stick to PICO.
