Use Xampp or any turnkey local solution for starters and testing.
From there i recommend ClearOs ( http://www.clearfoundation.com/ ) to run and experiment.
If you need an even easier solution i'd say you go for hosted.
There are tons of good virtual server or reseller deals if you want to have some freedom but even easier is a plain webhosting account.
Still you should be prepared to do a lot of research and read some forums.
I have "LocatePC" on a Vista partition on my laptop. It sends me an e-mail with all network details as well as who's logged in.
Ofcourse i have a guest account in Vista but i haven't managed to get the Guest account allowed to go online.
The tracking software was installed on the main account and the fact that the guest account is not allowed to go online, reveals some of Vista's flaws; The computer actually goes online on my wireless encrypted network but the info in the guest account says i'm not online. The e-mail is sendt without me noticing it.
This is the only reason for me to keep a dualboot with Windows (i mainly boot into Ubuntu) but i still consider it...:-)
Open source has two great capabilities;
- It's free
- The best projects have loads of support that doesn't look at the clock
- You can hire a developer and improve the software if you want to (or ofcource develop by yourself) making the possibillities endless for your company.
The only catch with the latter is that you'd have to open the sourcecode for anyone to see and use.
But this is a good thing! Imagine the benefits of a huge software project that is tailored to your companys needs only by adding your litle twist to it.
Try that with a proprietary software solution.
This will put the Ubuntu project and Dell in the same position as Apple!
The initial release has a strict hardware platform with selected components that they know works.
This is a great oportunity to produce a PC that needs no extra drivers and that just works (like Apples).
Future models may be developed in cooperation of the two and may spawn a need to make new drivers on sertain hardware.
This will gain the Linux community.
Let's all look forward to a new era of custom buildt os and hardware with great stability and quality!

BTW. LocatePC is a freeware solution.

Sweden doesn't have fjords, they've got smørgossbord...
