I could point out that the phenomenon your referring to isn't a feature of a liberal system, it occurs despite of your political lean, but...
It always amazes me how people throw things into one of two buckets "liberal" and "conservative". One of the buckets is good and one is bad, depending on the person. How about instead of using inconsistent terms like that we get right to the point, call the categories "us" and "them". Remember you don't have to think about it too much, ignorance is a plus when putting "them" down.
Unfortunately, these studies are probably aimed at the doctors, not the patients. Convince the doctor and often you've convinced the patient. The doctor's intent usually isn't the problem.
Just what we need, drug companies further muddling the waters so not even doctors can tell which treatments are useful or necessary. No wonder we see large movements away from things like vaccinations, which save lives. People are left with too many doubts and questions, fear doesn't lead to good decision making.
Well, it is pretty offensive as well. Making fun of a minority that in fairly recent history has been frequently abused, oppressed and even murdered. It'd go over better if it didn't leave certain things implied or in question.
The money has to come from somewhere. Having an ad on your screen does noone any good if you just ignore it.
Sadly, the quality control on many banner ads is lacking. Scams, attempts to exploit bugs, et cetera. This is the same industry that produces spam and most of the malware these days.
Maybe we should be trying to find better alertnatives for funding instead of relying on an industry which is usually best served by misinforming, tricking and ripping people off or at the very least intrusively forcing information on people.
Yes, I expect the paid sites will have ads as well. Greed is a wonderfully consistent that way.
I'm also fairly certain the ads on those pay sites will contain just as many scams and exploits. Oh and don't forget all the bright flashing ugly-as-anything crap they throw at you.
Personally, of the sites I use regularly, the ones where I can pay to disable ads, I do. The ones I can't, I use adblock.
Google gives me links on why Windows and Microsoft Office are expensive.
Bing gives me links on why commercial opensource software is expensive, why gas is expensive and why Macs are expensive.
It feels like Google is trying to find answers to my question, and Bing is returning Microsoft webpages with similar phrases and word matches then other pages with word matches. Makes the Bing search algorithm seem pretty weak, reminds me of using Yahoo a decade or so ago.
So if a medical procedure is obvious or has been done before, I won't get treatment?
Given how well they do at checking patents, all a patient will need to do is get their laywer to rewrite the doctor's order in fancy jargon and it'll be consisdered non-obvious. Of course only independantly wealthy patients will be able to afford this service so it'll just be the current system, except more of the money will go to lawyers.
who grants this stuff? The same people that will control your health care if barack obama and the democrats have their way.
An underfunded and understaffed department that could do a lot of good if properly run but doesn't due to neglect, abuse and cutbacks for which there are better run equivilants in other countries?
Every time my company's filter blocks me from accessing legitimate and helpful content that is related to my job (this happens a few times a day) I get really annoyed.
Fortunately their filter doesn't block news sites like slashdot or flash gaming websites, so I can take a few minutes to read up on the news or play a game to calm myself down. Clearly this is a better situation than having to deal with one or two people who abuse the system on an individual basis.
Argh, I accidentally modded this down instead of up. Stupid thing applies the moderation the second the drop down closes with no undo option other than removing ALL moderation you've put on the topic by posting. So lame.
Very good point though, most people are clueless about browsers. Not everyone has the same area of interest or expertise.
Did you not have school shootings, or where they just not as widely reported in the news (or you didn't hear of them)? I believe a student shot a few other students at one of my grandfather's schools. Its amazing how many generations this world has been going to hell for, yet we still aren't there. Ahh the good ol' days.
It's rare, but there are cases cell phones can help in schools in emergencies. We had one back when I was in school. A girl fell down some stairs in a storage area. She couldn't get back up, no one could hear her yelling, but she did get a signal on her cell.
As for the silly "suspended in the case of an emergency" if you can get to the controls to suspend it, you can probably get to a wired phone and don't need to suspend the system.
This is like the rediculous internet filters. At school, at work, I've never found these filters prevent me from accessing things I shouldn't. Usually there is a work around or they've missed a site. Often I've found they block access to useful relevant information, like answers to questions on message boards. Maybe we should try to educate people, and punish them if things get out of hand instead of trying to put in place flawed over-reaching technical solutions. Especially since those flawed technical solutions are usually more expensive than just dealing with the original problem.

I have a fully graphical calendar, it contains no text, not even numbers. Guess you can represent time without text, funny that.
Just because you can represent something as text, doesn't mean text is the best representation nor does it mean a text editor is the best method of manipulating it
Isn't it nice that they leave out the part where they break the backs of the animals first.
Isn't it nice how you make it sound so straightforward, like hurting animals is unjustifiable.
Vegan are you? Live in a mouse or rat infested home? Use any over the counter or presecription medications?
Hey, you don't have to have diabetes to enjoy hypoglycemia. There are other conditions that can lead to it. Unfortunately I don't like using the word since it seems to be popular right now. "Oh I'm hungry and feel a bit shaky, I must be hypoglycemic!"
True hypoglycemia, the kind that can be detected by measuring blood sugar, can be very unpleasant and even dangerous.
Having had the joy of experiencing that more than once I do not envy diabetics. It is not some miracle drug, it is part of your body's control systems. Too much or too little are both bad. Applying higher concentrations to specific areas such as wounds may be a good thing, but that doesn't mean increasing the amount in your bloodstream is good. Dosage and delivery matter, a lot.
Considering that I have reasonably inexpensive cutting tools that are diamond tipped, I would have to guess that either synthetic diamond is relatively cheap and easy to make or that diamond is only prohibitively expensive and rare when in the form of large flawless stones.
I don't get called a "tin-foil hatter" for that, I get called a "troll":(
I have to agree with much of what you've said, corporations aren't nessisarily opponents or evil. You just have to realize that as an entity their personality tends to consist of the greed of their decision making employees. Companies exist to make money, people get jobs to make money.
I have found myself in situations I question the morality of, but I don't want to lose my job and my paycheque over them. Often these situations exist not because someone above me has given an order, but simply due to interactions between circumstance and policy.
The minute they linked in GPL only libraries, they needed to go GPL. Not later when they got caught.
You have a point, it seems unlikely that a corporation as large as Microsoft would plan to violate the GPL like that by releasing the binaries before switching if they intended to switch.
Seems more likely that they really did get caught out, and PR decided to spin things
Oh noes! If you write an extension to open source software you may have to release it open source! Beware! Using a shared resource you may be required to share your work in return! Horror!Don't let this happen to you!

So what your saying is you need a pin with a really REALLY sharp point so you can search for new exotic particles?

a mob of angry Slashdotters is utterly insufficient to determine whether the patent is (1) valid and (2) infringed by Twitter.
Depends what you mean by valid. You seem to mean valid in the legal system. Most people here seen mean valid as in reasonable and logical.

The claim does sound a little like a subset of the internet.

I still don't understand some of it.
I'm pretty sure that's the point. I get the feeling many EULAs are designed to be hard for the end user to understand.
Someone is going overboard with the mods on this thread. How does the parent deserve to be modded Troll?
