I never actually thought about what IPRED stands for. Now I see the acronym refers to words in english...
I all ready knew the swedish elite takes its directions regarding copyright law from the big ol' US of A, but jesus, couldn't you at least bother to translate the names of laws they've ordered into swedish !?!
And I'm going to let you, then violate your patent and offer to compensate you face to face, so that we can finally see what you look like, mister Anonymous Coward, if that is your real name...
In short: Just give people enough for basics. Then those who love music, for example, can do what they like and know, even if they don't get paid enough from music alone. Those who just want to slack off in the couch and do nothing, could do that.
The question is if enough people would like to have a better life than the bare necessities for the world to go round, so to speak. I think so.
In theory, gamers (or any other group that wants a commercial-grade Free software app) could get together in large enough numbers and employ developers and artists who make a Free/CC game, right? The project could obviously also have people contributing for free. No need for Valves or other middle-men (or women).
Is there any real reason FLOSS communities couldn't now or in the near future pull off a polished commercial grade project?
Considering how drivers over here are surprised by icy roads in the winter, every winter, leading to numerous crashes come first snow, I'm inclined to believe your theory about this news.
You can't have people leave with the receipt or able to check their vote afterwards. If you leave with the receipt, the thug that has kidnapped your dog or promised you a reward for your vote can check your vote.
Punishment (anykind, not just death) really only works as a deterrent for white collar criminals.
For other crimes, motivated by strong emotion or (perceived) necessity, in the heat of the moment, one doesn't much consider the consequences in the long run.
[...]and the public radio station is, well, a public radio station[...]
I take it public radio is not very high quality in your part of the world.
Here in Sweden we pay the equivalent of about $250 US for the (obligatory, if you have a tv receiver) tv-licence, which also pays for public radio. Public radio and tv is (supposedly) free from commercial and political influence and the quality is highly superior to anything else. I love it. (Some don't like the whole socialism thing, though.)
And the same huge number of users when asked "what OS do you want on your new PC, Windows or Google Chrome?", will say "Windows" because they don't have a clue what an OS is and "Windows" sounds vaguely familiar.
And what will they say when they're told Windows costs almost as much as the computer, while the google OS is free?
(Maybe they'll say "Well, can I use it for email, internet and empeethrees?")

Bah... Of course one who likes computers should introduce them to their kids. If the kids don't want to program, so be it. If they do, they'll have a knowledgeable mentor.
Sure, one should try to find and encourage all sorts of things, not just what one knows, but I thinks this mentality of not telling kids what you think or like is worrisome. If you don't influence your kids, fucking Toys'R'Us will.
Let the kids know what you think and what you like. Just don't be a dick about it.
It's probably true that FOSS could use marketing. It's sad that the world is in such a state that you need to bullshit (as in lure with buzzwords/shinyness and appeal to emotion and such tricks). Maybe you sometimes do need to play the game.
For example: Amnesty International does ads and they can help lots more people because of the extra donations an ad campaign results in.
What I'd really feel like saying is a bit different, though:
If we live in a world where a good image manipulating application is overlooked because its name is GIMP, there is something wrong with the world. If "brand" is more important than functionality, this world needs less marketing, not more.
Fuck marketing! Just give people the free and open truth.

And then there is also the Software Freedom Law Center, http://www.softwarefreedom.org/
Founded in 2005 to "provide legal representation and other law-related services to protect and advance Free, Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS)."
"No matter the course of action Microsoft could have taken, they still would have been criticized."
Probably true, and I guess it can be annoying on some level that people might not see facts for their zealotry (Damn freedom mongers!).
However. I see no way for microsoft to ever be "good". To paraphrase:
M$: "Do you expect me to comply with the GPL?
migla: "No, mister Microsoft, I expect you to die!"
And I'm going to let you, then violate your patent and offer to compensate you face to face, so that we can finally see what you look like, mister Anonymous Coward, if that is your real name...
I have a pie-in-the-sky solution that will solve musiciands and sound engineers problems (and very many other peoples problems too): "Basic income".

Wrong. Straight from the GNU:s mouth:
"The GNU Affero General Public License is a free, copyleft license [...]"
http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/agpl-3.0.html
I haven't looked that closely, but can't you go to https://launchpad.net/launchpad-project then click on a sub-project and then on the "Code"-tab?
Status should be changed to "Fix released", then:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-community/+bug/393596

...on the other hand, maybe it would not be fair to compare karmic current stability with that of a released fedora?

There. Fixed that for you.
about $250, yearly, that is.

When could I expect to run a custom firmware image on the Nokia N73, which runs S60 v3?
Here's a totally unfounded theory:
Capitalism and marketing is at the root of this evil. Over the last few decades, marketing has grown to be more efficient and more ubiquitous.
Science isn't groovy, compared to other ways of life a marketer can conjure up images of with which to influence young minds to become good consumers.

Or maybe they refer to a machine that makes ATM:s
Nope. But the shoe is on the other foot, now, isn't it...
"Cool! We don't need you guys anymore."
Eh... One step closer to not having men, more like.
(I only read the headline. I apologize if this is an erroneous comment)
