    Depending of the definition of "Desktop", maybe 2010 (or 2011 or later) will be TYOTLD, technically. What will the "Google desktop" be like?

    Maybe it will be a clean and simple thing that isn't anything like how I see a "Desktop".

    If it is an simple appliance-like thing, it's not for me (but for Cletus and Mom and many others). That's ok.

    So, then two new questions arise:
    1. What will we call the Desktop as we "power users" see it? (Maybe power-user desktop").

    2. Is "the year of the Google desktop" a good thing for "the year of the power-user linux desktop"? I think it probably is.

    Am I making sense? I don't know.

    I think the RX-51, aka "N900" is due "second half of 2009". The OS for it will not be backwards compatible with the n800

    Granted, we're not there yet, but it's good that some people are ideological and looking into the future.

    This scheme would not have worked on me (or if it would, it would have spoiled me, IMO).

    FS and OSS developers and users come together just fine developing and promoting FOSS, don't they?

    Like the PFJ, the JPF and the Popular Front, they may be a divided bunch ideologically, but does it really matter much in the case of FOSS?

    (Unlike with the fictional or non-fictional leftist groups, where a divide certainly has hurt their common cause.)

    Any anecdotes or anything to show how the divide actually hurts?

    A lot of girls don't do math because that's not where the cool boys are. Their social standing would take a hit if they were caught carrying a calculator and hanging around the nerds and yes believe it or not, a girl's self image means a lot.

    PS - "Free" "Open Source" "You can compile it yourself!" don't count. People don't buy software because it is cheap, they buy it because it enriches their lives or increases their productivity.

    Why don't "Free" or "Open source" count? That's exactly why I'm running linux. It enriches my life to keep up with the developments in free software. It enriches my life to watch the adoption of free software increase, liberating humankind from the clutches of the anti-christ, figuratively speaking. I don't try that hard to convert people for technical reasons. I just tell them about freedom and about not sucking satans cock. Yearning for freedom and a brighter future for all humankind is what's it about. I also don't absolutely need the best bitmap manipulation or all the latest and greatest games. If you do, stick with windows, but there's no reason to (figuratively speaking, again) drink the black jizzum with a smile.

    PS. I used to be a Windows user too. I bet that's where most linux users come from.

    In Sweden there's a 4 % threshold for "Riksdagen", the parliament, which probably makes it easier to succeed with a new party, compared to the system in the USA.

    IMO, One thing that the US should perhaps do is to have 2 rounds, like they do in Finland, when electing a president. If no candidate gets > 50% in the first round, the top 2 advance to the second round. This way you could vote for what you really want in the first round and one day an outsider might stand the slightest chance.
