I second this. Carriers in the EU have been offering Free netbooks for quite some time. All is needed is the 18 month or 2 year contract.
They're actually a really good deal and many fellow students at university have taken them up on the opportunity to basically pay for a laptop over 2 years.
Munich, Germany, is beautiful, is extremely central and has the best airport voted 4 times in a row. I was there for a year and it was ideal to visit everywhere in Europe on both charter and cheap flights.
The primary language in big companies is English and most people speak it. German isn't that difficult to learn for just a simple conversation (but gets very difficult later).
The biggest thing I suppose is the 30 days contractual holiday, usually flexitime AND 10 "Feiertage" which are public holidays. In all, you're hardly working but earning a lot:p
I use Apple's iChat. Of course you need a Mac but I talk for hours full screen to my relatives around the world. With two semi-good broadband connections, it works flawlessly and the quality is second to none (in this price range).
Of course the downside is that you'd both need Macs.
