    Should've clarified: I was talking about businesses upgrading. It seems that the companies are set on sticking with MS, so the thought is hopefully they will wait until after SP1 to start upgrading.

    Are these folks on one of Microsoft's licensing plans where they have to upgrade?

    I'm coming from ignorance here - not trying to give you a hard time. I am not sure why the corporate guys have to upgrade. I can only guess it's because of the licensing thing I've mentioned or their PHB is telling them to. Or are there other reasons?

    Most of the "techies" that I know think the same thing about Vista.

    Why do they even want to upgrade?

    I'm on XP Pro and I have absolutely no desire or see any reason to upgrade to Vista. And from what I've seen so far about Vista, my next hardware purchase will not have Vista on it.

    Stories about MPAA shenanigans could just as easily and correctly be entitled, for example, "Sony Sets Up Fake Site..." (Or Disney, or Universal, or Paramount, or Warner). MPAA is, after all, simply their agent in these matters

    Or, you could just link to the Wikipedia site and not get mod'ed down.

    I can get mod'ed down all day because this user name (iknownuttin) is owned by a consortium of folks who speak their minds and doesn't necessarily represent my own personal point of view or spelling, althoough, by being a member, they in fact represent me. And if I do get mod'ed down, it's no skin off of my ass because this is just shell organization's user name.

    So, it's really not me saying this, just my user id, but the parent is correct and the mods are Goddamned stupid for modderating him down.

    Actually, the bike pulls to the right. So by rolling up his right pant leg that side creates less drag, which helps trim the bike back to the left.

    I once knew a pilot for parachutists and he would trim the plane so well that all he did to turn was to lean in the direction he wanted to go. I believe it was a C172 or something small like that.

    That's the problem in this world: we're so afraid of offending folks that we keep our mouths shut - and we let folks who don't give a shit take over the media with their bullshit ...*cough*Ann Coulter ...*cough*...opinions. Sometimes, they're even right but we're too afraid to say anything because we're afraid of certain people *cough*muslims*cough* rioting and killing folks for exercising their GOD given rights!

    And the rest of us, who are sick and tired of folks who abuse the nice folks who are trying to make the World a better place by trying to keep folks civil towards another, are chomping at the bit to speak our mind - even if it means calling a heart a heart (notice I didn't say "spade").

    We're so afraid of offending folks that we've all become pussies.

    Slashdot and our "Flambait", "Troll", "Overrated", etcc.. mods included.

    The only thing that gets transmitted to the CC clearing houses is the CC number and expiration date.

    Once, when a duplicate charge showed up on my statement, I chewed out my bank for not checking the signature or time stamp. That's when they clued me in what data they really do receive. Then I had the opportunity to talk to a guy who writes code for CC machines (I worked with him). You know, the ones by the register. He confirmed it.

    Don't believe me? Next CC purchase, I don't care where - including online - sign your name Heywood Jablowme, Dick Hertz, Mike Hunt or Whatever. Your charge will go through and nobody will ever contact you about it.

    I've doing this for years with the same bank. Credit Card transactions were never safe - they're made safe by the CC companies taking the risk of BS charges.

    In spite of what some would like to tell you, IQ is not a measurement of intelligence.

    IQ means you're good at:

    1. Memorizing lists of numbers
    2. Memorizing vocabulary
    3. Putting blocks together in a pattern
    4. Seeing some pattern to a list
    5. And whatever the other things are on the Terman Adult Test.

    It doesn't measure:

    1. People skills
    2. Athletic ability
    3. musical ability
    4. Artistic ability
    5. Business skills/Street smarts (I know of a few genius who get taken by "stupid" business folks - Tesla is a prime example. He died penniless while Westinghouse took his inventions and made millions!
    6. A loving heart (sappy, I know)
    7. Sense of humour
    8. Ability to listen
    9. Compassion

    They're starved because there's a correlation (and arguably a causation) between the amount of money a candidate spends and the probability of his (re)election.

    Look at the election last year in CT between Lieberman and that other guy. He was a new comer business guy with a lot of money and he almost removed Lieberman. Was it all money? No, I'm not saying that. But without the big bucks, you are just a whisper in the mighty wind - no one will hear you or pay attention to you.

    The other thing is the electorate gets their information from advertisements and, I really think this now, opinions from the pundits. Why do you think those "analysts" and pundits on all of the networks, internet and those radio talk shows get so much money and airtime - people listen to them. And I constantly hear people parroting what they've heard on TV or radio - I catch myself doing it sometimes, too.

    I don't think big money will ever leave politics. You can put the brakes on the special interest groups, but that'll mean that only billionaires can run - Bloomberg.

    We'll see.....

    Microsoft likes to peddle things like "increased productivity", mainly because it's impossible to measure and hence impossible to argue with.

    Here's how would measure it:

    1. Increased productivity means workers are getting more done.
    2. Hence, for an amount of indirect cost, there's more getting done, therefore the net effect is indirect costs are less per dollar of revenue.
    3. margins increase.

    So, ineffect, MS is saying:

    Buy vista.

    ????

    Profit.

    But, the "???" is lowered indirect costs.

    I'm not an accounting teacher (obviously) but that's how I would explain it to a PHB. No the trick is how to avoid blame if their margins don't increase!

    Marriot Hotel. Lots of wrong numbers which isn't a problem. The one time it was a problem was when some teachers group had some sort of convention there.
    Their people printed our number on their fliers. Most of the folks were nice when we told them they had the wrong number, but a few got really pissed and insisted that they had the right number. I really wanted to say after they "insisted" rudely for a few times, "OK, you got me! This really is the Marriot and because I, Joe Schmoo, gave you a hard time, you can have the presidential suite and a bottle of Dom every night - free of charge. Here's your confirmation #." And then I would then let them go.

    My wife vetoed that. Sign....

    I think that's called the Smart car. It may still run on gas, but can park backing up to a curb. And I guess if you want more style, you can go with a Mini

    I can't find a cite. But I understand that the US version of the Mini Cooper is about 40% larger than the British one for US highway safety standards. I don't know why motorcycles are exempt - Gov regs I guess.

    I would love to have those really small cars but I'm not sure our Nann...er... Government would allow us to drive them on our roads.

    Sorry. I was trying to point out that there's this two faced attitude in the US. We all want to be rich, but when some big, rich and powerful corporation actually wants to get paid or makes a profit (Oil companies), then they're evil and it's a "sin" to have money and make money. On the other hand, if the computer company was owned by some minority group, you can bet that those lawmakers would be singing a different tune.

    Dont kid yourself IBM will love this. They will write off the 5 mill on condition that they get the next big IT contract California signs.

    What's the point in getting the contract if the lawmakers know that they can bully IBM and get away with not paying.

    And as far as the write off is concerned, take the corp tax rate multiplied times the 5 million, and that'll be the net affect on IBM's bottom line. So it's only a fraction of the 5 million.
