usually with debit cards it gets taken out straight away, but not with credit
in fact, with credit, the "authorised" deduction from you "actual balance" (not available credit) will disspear if they take longer than a week to take the money... but they can still take it at any time
it can catch you out if you have a low credit limit
if you dont have a pin you just press "OK" without entering a PIN
here in australia you can CHOOSE to HAVE to enter a pin AS WELL as signing, or you can choose to just sign
there is no way a PIN+signature is LESS secure than just signing!
and if your card NEEDS a PIN you can't JUST sign
credit cards are inherently insecure because all you need is the number on the card and the expiry - which is often printed ON THE RECEIPT!
a debit card with a PIN is more secure because the numbers on the front of the card are NOT your account number and cannot be entered manually (wheras credit card numbers can be)
In Australia you can arrange with your bank so that you HAVE to enter your credit card PIN into the EFTPOS machine even for credit purchases (instead of just pressing "OK") (and you must still also sign for it), or else it will be rejected
I met one guy who had this done because his son stole his card enough times
i dont know whether this would fuck up your transactions over seas or over the phone where they enter your numbers for you - i assume it would.
didnt they try to get into the DNA database in an episode of NCIS? and they were all pissed off because it was only for identification of remains
im not even really sure what spin the writers were putting on the issue... seemed to me like they thought it should be used for anything and everything, without any concern for privacy (but then the 3 super-talented-know-it-all NCIS cops are finding the "bag guys" right...)
if you have a crap upload rate, it probably wont matter, as any other torrents running will take the upstream bandwidth first (thats what seems to happen to me anyway)
i find that on international torrents, i almost always have a 1:1 ratio anyway, so by the time im finished im happy to turn the torrent off.
who HASN'T typed in a URL that is not directly linked to?
its just curiosity, or detective work. what about pages that are inherently broken... where some dumbass has misspelt part of an a href and u cant click on "contact", but you know the page is there
if all you have to do is type in a url, it aint hacking and it isnt unethical
the mac client has *very little* features, but it does work well
any chance a 4.0 for the mac would give a bit more control?

As far as I know the "Shuffle Songs" at the top level of the menu does not "shuffle the whole content of the ipod"; it merely turns the shuffle setting on or off without the annoyance of dipping into the options menu.
no. "shuffle songs" at the top level starts playing your entire library. shuffled.
if you want to turn shuffle on/off u still have to go thru multiple levels of menu.
iwork is supposed to be simple and easy to use. databases are not simple or easy or really very useful for everyday work, and would be wasted on the majority of users.
if you need a database get one of the established programs out there already, and leave apple to concentrate on useful, everyday apps.
Well? You had parents that invested a lot of time and money in your upbringing. Instead of passing that investment along like every generation before you, you're keeping it for yourself. That is an inequity, is it not?
your parents CHOSE to have you.
dont try and make someone feel guilty for being loved - there simply are no conditions set on children at birth, and pressure to the contrary inflicted by society/parents/others is fucked up.
hey, im not saying that databases arent cool:) and the way apple makes their software work is totally seemless yet power
what i mean is, an average user who would use a database application (ie access on windows) to construct their *own* database - which is what the parent (now great-grandparent) poster was saying was needed.
i just dont see mum and dad making databases for fun, and hence a database application has no place in iWork
He was working for the company, on company time, at the companys direction (after he asked the company president to be assigned to do work on blue lasers), using company equipment.
well i'm sure if he could afford his own equipment he wouldnt have been working for them - do you have any idea how much money is required to perform this sort of research?? and how much time and effort? its not like he sat around thinking and went "oh whoops - hey look at this!"
face it - he worked his ass off and got shafted for it.
you think hollywood brain dead deserve more money for one crappy movie than the inventor of some freaking amazing technology that puts billions into the company and pushes electronics to a new level?
without this guy there would be no blue LEDs, no blue lasers, no blu-ray or HD DVD, and he gets $8 mil. makes me sick. he should be living it up on his own island or soemthing... someone deserving of that sort of money.
a mic would have been great - even my dad is into skype, and trying to get him to switch with one more thing he cant use... well, that makes it harder:/
well the number on the front of a debit card is useless, AFAIK.
at least, you can't just enter it into a terminal like u can a credit card number, so i really dont think its an issue

if someone has your card AND your pin, you should have reported it lost by now.
if you dont have a pin you just press "OK" without entering a PIN

except ive never met anyone who eats peanut butter and JAM sandwiches here in perth
:)
maybe vegemite?
no, its being bullied, but willingly
the australian government follows the US around like a good little doggy and refuses to stand up for, or listen to, its own people
its shameful.
maybe, maybe not.

A journalist reports fact- not speculation.
you have obviously never read the australian Sunday Times.
all they report is the "fact" that someone speculated something.
I totally agree

no, the mac client LISTS multiple downloads
queing is when one finishes, another starts
the mac client has *very little* features, but it does work well
any chance a 4.0 for the mac would give a bit more control?

is it slower to sync a FAT -formatted ipod on a mac? I heard it was an hence I havent changed from HFS
I still find it ridiculous that windows will support any-formatted/burnt cd/dvd but wont support other files systems
whereas osx still cant read packet written burnt cds, but has no probs with multiple file systems...
cntrl-f2 lets u access the top menus
:P
it drops down the apple menu and u can use left and right... no idea if u can do straight to "file" for example
cntrl-f3 controls the dock, and u can take screen caps with cmd-shift-3
u may have to have full keyboard access turned on... but i really am not sure
usually a google on cntrl-f2 or similar brings up a list of funky keystrokes u would never guess
iWork needs a spreadsheet and database
no way.

while its not WYSIWYG, texshop is an excellent tex editor for os x
basically the ability to preview your pdf in the prog is the best feature (if only preview had a refresh button!)
has anyone ever come across an "average" user who actually uses databases?
i studied databases in my cs degree and even i cant be bothered - let alone people who dont even understand how a database works
access in windows is a piece of shite to work with, and the flat file database in appleworks is a waste of time
honestly, i think adding a database to an iWork suite would be nothing but bloat - and that is exactly why apple rocks over ms - no bloat
surely if you know anything about databases and need the functionality there are other options that are more powerful/better/whatever?

tho he'll prolly keep working til hes dead!
no, it was advertised that it would be posted 9 hours later
but i watched it before the 9 hours was up.
idvd works if you dont have a superdrive, you just cant burn
in the keynote speech steve said that the new idvd will support "all the dvd formats" ie dvd-r dvd+R -Rw/+RW "if your drive will support it"
that to me sounds like they will support other dvd recorders
i like the slot loading
but the slot superdrive (imac, mac mini) is 4x, the tray loading (emac, powermac) is 8x
granted, atm 4x media is half the price.
