Gotta agree with that. Nothing easier than calling OpenWindow(), CopyBitmapRastPort() and all the others. GTK/Qt are an OO nightmare (Containers? I just want to open a Window!). Ah, "The Joy Of X"...
Actually, i'm very impressed with the evalution copy of Opera. I only downloaded it last week, but it's stable, and damn fast. I'm sure it'll be even better once i've gotten used to it's UI:)
Good way of looking at it, but how do you do this on a world wide scale? And don't you think that those costs would only be transfered to you in the end (As it is with blank hard-media now?)
Crminalising the "cause" and not the "effect" is something that has been happening for centuries, all over the world. You only need to look at the current drug laws to see this.
Another example: you pay a premium on your blank media for those double tape tecks (Or CDR's), to cover the "cost" of piracy. The ability to do something is seen as the criminal act, rather than the effect of doing said act. We live in a crazy world my friend.
Disclamier: That post may have made no sense. Sorry.
Web browsers? Pah! Back in my day, we had to use Gopher! Gopher i say! And if we found a file that was more than 100k in size we used to weep like little girls! Our email would takes days to arrive. Sometimes it wouldn't arrive at all! And that's how we liked it!
Because database applications are insanly boring:) You'll have a multitude of Video/DVD catalogs, address databases, and maybe the odd image catalog....entirely predictable. Yes, the students would learn the basics of databases, but then promptly ignore most of what they have learnt.
I know this to be true, because a database app is exactly one of the boring projects i had to do in College:)
I could probably come up with loads. Except you don't give us a lot of information.
What is the current ability level of the students? Is there anything in particular that you would like them to learn during the project? How long will the students have?
One quick thought. Why not define loose parameters for the students, and let them choose something to do (in small groups)? They can learn planning that way themselves at least:)
You're thinking of Shapeshifter (Which was very useful when i owned an Amiga.)
Basilisk II is by the same guy (Can't remember his name. Sorry...) who wrote Shapeshifter (And Frodo, the C64 emulator), but is far more advanced, and has a Motorola 68k emulator for use on non Motorola platforms.
I think it could be the other way around. I should imagine most people shy away from buying things like DVD players, decent stereos etc. because it's far to complicated. If manufacturers could just agree on a standard, they can advertise it all as "Plug and Go" type stuff. Think about how quickly hardware sales took off after Win95, and Plug 'n Pray...:)
Sure there is demand. One really good example i can think of is home cinema products.
I don't know if you've ever tried to integrate multple home cinema products from multiple manufacturers, but it's a royal pain in the ass. I have a TV, VCR, Cable Decoder, DVD player, Surround Stereo, and of course the computer.
Most of these devices use slightly diferent standards (For example, my cable box & DVD can output a clean RGB signal, my VCR only does composite - Meaning i have to manually adjust the colour & brightness each time), and a multitude of connectors and cables. I also have a total of six remotes controls (Two just for the stereo/AMP) The only way the computer is connected to the whole setup is via. a line from the soundcard to the stereo.
What if all of these products worked to a singal standard. Physically, i'd love to have just one (Or perhaps two) types of connector, that can connect all of my hardware together. Then stick something like Jini on top of the standard hardware, and now my hardware can all talk to each other. No need for those six remotes any more, my DVD player will tell the Amp to switch it's inputs automatically. My computer can now become a much more integral component. Hell, i can even connect my stereo directly to the internet, and recieve Netcast radio, or download MP3's on demand. Or connect my TV/VCR to the internet, and download streaming video. Do away with the VCR completly, and i can record from the Cable Box onto the computer.
Phew Anyway, if you managed to follow any of that, you'll get my point. Integration can only be a Good Thing. I can't wait:)
Oh, so it's *not* just me. Yes, my users.pl also says i am a moderator with 0 points. And yes, the M2 link is missing. Yes, this has been happening for a few days.:)

Just imagine: 5 days solid, UPS alarms going off....

You don't want Galeon if you don't run Gnome...
Does anyone know if there is a non-Gnome project like Galeon? All i want is a normal, simple, GTK or Qt front end!! Please?
Yes. As in, "Yes it will crash, more or less" ;)
Why the hell would i want my Calculator to play MP3's? Geez, there's convergance, and then theres convergance.
Need DOS? Got Windows ME? You can always create a FreeDOS partition or bootdisk, and use that.
Microsoft removing DOS from Windows has been on the cards for years, face it. I'm actually surprised it didn't happen earlier...
Hey, i just thought. Anyone know if there is an IT Workers Union in the UK? I could easily see this sort of thing happening you know.

Or vote Raving Looney or an Idenpendent weirdo...it's always funny to see a "mainstream" candidate get less votes than a Raving Loony member :)
IIRC Gopher wasn't a search engine, just a precursor to the WWW. Gopher did have a search engine named Veronica though....
Software that slows your computer down so you can see what it would have been like to run Unreal on a 2
Isn't that called Netscape?
Grizally Guru mode on:

I've seen several crashed Cash Machines (ATM's) here in the UK. Natwest has decided that NT is the perfect embeded OS for them, aparently.
Kind of funny when you walk up to the machine and see a memory exception in Green screen.....
Actually, he's at least right when he says "Linux Sucks". But not because it has more bugs than anyone else.
The whole problem is, all Operating Systems suck. Linux may suck less than some, and it may suck more than some. But, it does suck.
Is Linux a good server OS? Yes. But so is Solaris, *BSD etc. Is Linux a good desktop OS? For geeks maybe, not for Joe A. User.
This isn't a flame, just my honest opinion. I run a Redhat spinoff distro myself and use it exclusivly at home, so at least i know why it sucks....

But in my job I have seen more-important bugs go by that i have reported, but the programmers don't feel like fixing.
Thats pretty much a standard part of the job in any QA department. Sure is here, and i test in-house software....

Anyone mailed Rob/Taco about it yet though?
Yeah. Some scr1pt k1dd13 with a Biology degree and access to a lab is working on Pentium Pox as we speak...
No, just forgot all about it. I'll have to take another look at it, i have a copy of the M16 source back at home now. :)
