I signed up with Speakeasy on Feb 15th 2007.

On March 15th 2007, I called and canceled because my loop (installed by Bellsouth/At&t 3 weeks before) still hadn't been patched over to my condo wiring (COVAD install pushed back and back etc...). If I had a tone generator handy, I could have patched it over myself. The next day, I called comcast, and they had me up the same day - tripple play - phone,tv,internet - $99.

I really wanted speakeasy, a static ip, ease of hosting at home, etc....
Now I have to get dynamic dns working, but at least I don't have to drive in to work when the NOC calls at 3am anymore.

  2. same here on IT and A National Security Letter Gag Order · · Score: 0, Interesting

I ran a small (2000 customer) ISP from 1999 to 2005. In the last 2 years I was there (2003-2005) we received 2 of these letters from (can't tell you) directing us to provide all data (radius logs, billing information, etc...) for a couple of individuals. The letters included a gag, were not judge issued, etc... Neither of those individuals accounts were canceled, nor did payment ever stop coming in - so I assume they were never arrested for anything.

On the other hand, multiple times over the years I was able to detect compromises on our systems - collect enough evidence to prove without a shadow of a doubt who had committed the unauthorized entry felonies, reported the information to the (can't tell you 3 letter agency), and never once had them do anything about it.

During my time running the ISP I ordered a $10 mushroom (illegal) spore syringe (legal) from the company in high times (pf) that no longer exists and tried to grow them at home just for fun. It was just a jar of moldy rice - no mushrooms. I get my house raided without a warrant, all my personal possessions confiscated (computers, tv, furniture) - charged with manufacturing a schedule 1 narcotic (which carries a 30 year sentence). I refuse to cooperate and narc out my friends that grow weed (I have no idea how they knew about them) in exchange for dropping the bullshit charges, so the DA takes the manufacturing charge before the judge. I point out to the judge that the lab test results (which were + for .001 micrograms of psylocin) do not match the illegal substance I was arraigned for manufacturing (the arraignment was for psylocybin). The judge asks the DA to clarify for him what it is his asking to charge me for, the DA still pushes for manufacturing and jail time. The judge suggests he change it to simple possession of a schedule 1 and let me plead 1st offender given the information he's reviewed. The DA reluctantly agrees, and instead of going to jail for 30 years I get off with 5 years of probation and a clean record once I finished it.

Our government does a lot of fucked up shit.

They use RHEL at work - I found a samba bug that had been patched in 3.0.21c we need patched on our servers. Management wouldn't let anything in that didn't come down from RHN.

Went to RHN and opened many many cases over the next month - trying to get one of the incompetent indian fucks to let engineering know that their 3.0.9 samba version they still have deployed now needed patched to fix this bug that was causing crashes on all of our rhel 3 servers.

It took a month - and multiple opened cases - before one of the indians assigned a ticket actually read what was in it and passed it to the engineering team to fix. All the other idiots just pasted cut and paste repsonses that had nothing to do with the problem I was pointing out - and handing them a patch for.

Finally - I got a patch samba version from them. Attached to the case. Still haven't seen it come down the subscribed update channels - so no one else is getting it.

If Google is teaming w/ Earthlink on anything - then their do no evil maxim is shot.

Earhlink sucks - they are one of the most evil ISPs on the planet. I can't even count the number of friends and family I know who got screwed in Atlanta when Earthlink swallowed Mindspring, and then over the course of a few years fired everybody worth a shit and outsourced all the support, most of the networking, and the majority of the well paid unix and developer jobs to shitty incompetent counterparts in India. They PR'd it as becoming a globably supporting company while at the same time everyone even in upper management (what was left of it) was cussing Sprint's greedy ass exec teams for killing everything Mindspring had worked to build.

Earthlink is Evil - Google doing Earthlink is the same as Google doing Evil.
