I hope to migrate to a PC with only Linux on it by mid-summer. The problem is that I am rather new to Linux, so I am trying to get all the kinks out. (Of course having some prior experience with Unix helps!) I also share my PC with my girlfriend, so I am training her all at the same time. Why am I telling all you this? Because I think that Loundry has a point here. We cannot make change unless we are desperate for change. I think that every one of us needs to use some discipline and deal with the shortcomings of Linux. This way we will be more aware of the shortcomings, and we can eliminate the shortcomings and push Linux to be the OS that my grandma can use!

First off, I agree with you in that this does help to some extent, especially from most copycats.
I disagree with you in that this does not help the virus vulnerability issue with Outlook. Do you know how easy it is to write a macro virus in a .DO* or .XL*? How about renaming an executable? Or a macro in an .xls file that renames/decompresses another file that is mailed with it? This is just giving the average user a false sense of security!

I cannot endorse this issue until M$ locks down the default settings. If the user wishes to be vulnerable, then let them change the settings as they wish. Perhaps a notification when they try to execute malicious code??? I know that every time I open a spreadsheet in Excel, it warns me that there could be macro-viruses in the document. Maybe they can add that simple teeny warning into Outlook?!

Yet another reason Open Source rules. I could just add that warning 'feature' myself in less than 10 lines of code.

  20. A very good point! on Studies Say Video Games Increase Violent Behavior · · Score: 2

My Dad used to carry a rifle to school every day (in the 40's) to go hunting after school. He never shot, or killed anyone. His parents, at home, taught him better.

This is the point that I have been trying to make! Look at our ancestry, we are hunters. Throughout history, our fathers have gone out and blown the brains out of cattle, deer, sheep, and almost anything else that moves. Our ancestors cut the heads off of chickens, rabbits, and small game. My question is if this behavior did not lead to school massacres etc., then how the hell does a stupid video game?!

When kids grew up in the late 1800's and early 1900's, they grew up with hunting rifles in thier hands. The were taught how to hunt from a young age and probably got thier first kills before they were 10! The were exposed to cleaning and skinning the kill as well. Has any of these 'experts' that tell us that video games are to blame actaully stuck their hand into a deer's chest to cut the sternum with thier knife? I bet not.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of guns because they are becoming less and less practicle in today's urban society, but what I am trying to say is that if kids in the past had used these guns for hunting, and killed all kinds of animals yet they were not raving lunatics, then why are the kids today turning into these evil beasts because of video games? The answer is that they are not. Nothing has changed. As long as we are humans with free will, there will always be violence and tragedy. We must accept it and do something about accountability. We must look out for our kids, not by putting metal detectors into their schools, not by subscribing them to WAVE, but by teaching them how to get along with other kids, how to communicate their feelings with others, and that they are not alone in this cold world and that there are people, at home, that love them very much.

I gave up moderation on this entire news story to post this reply in this thread.

You claim that moderation is not censorship but merely a filter that relevant information must pass through. Frankly, that is bullshit. Many on-topic posts are moderated down simply because they disagree with open source dogma or are critical of Linux and VA. In many cases, if the downward moderated post were to say the exact same thing about another company(Microsoft), they would be moderated up.

Who is a moderator? A moderator is any random /. user. I am just some guy like you that wants to read news about technology. Every two weeks or so, I notice that I am a moderator, and I take advantage of it. It is important to note that I do agree with much of your letter to Cmdr Taco, however on the topic of moderation, I disagree.

Moderation cannot be censorship because it is performed by a cross-section of the registered users on Slashdot. If you are not registered (which is free) then you do not have the rights that you may desire. Take a website that did not have accounts, yet had open posting without moderation; www.segfault.org

This tech-linux-humor site was great until the Natalie Portman epidemic broke out. Sure, the trolls were listened to, but did they stop? No.
Segfault is now a humor site that is dying (just about dead). It is dying because it no longer allows posting by the users, and it is lacking the traffic as a result.

How does a site remain free (as in speech) while getting rid of all the trolls? Simply have the users LOG IN! I have my threshold at 1, and it helps out a ton!

Moderation can be abused by the moderators (moderating down anti-linux stuff) but as long as there are registered users reading /., there will be moderators. And if you are a moderator and you do not agree with moderation done, you simply change it accordingly.

Moderation works, my advise to all that are bothered with moderation is to set up an account and log in when you read Slashdot. You will be heard. Furthermore, if you notice that you have moderator access, USE IT!
It is a very important tool to the success/demise of this site. If you want to enjoy what you read, use your moderation rights!
