That is what Bill Gates was quoted back in the 80's. I am running 256MB ram right now. My point? I am sure that 50000GB seems quite insane right now, it may be the minimum reqs for Windows 2005.
In fact, you make very little sense. For a PalmTop application, this technology would yield a sufficient storage space in a very small footprint. Gee, isn't that what we want?
I do not see how you think that this would be disaster in the marketplace. (What would you have thought of a 10GB drive back in the 80's?)
I think it was edited because the word hacker is too broad of a term for this context. In other words, an cracker can be a subset of a hacker, but a hacker is not a cracker.
The context in this story is of one who cracks into computers/networks. This is a cracker. Whether this cracker is also a hacker is not proven in this context, so using the term hacker is completely inaccurate.
Hacker == one who uses unconventional tactics to solve a given problem. Cracker == one who uses known security flaws to gain access to a computer (or program) that they do not have rights to access. Are all crackers hackers? no. Are all hackers crackers? no. Can a hacker be a cracker? yes. Should the two terms be used synonomously? no. Is this story about crackers? yes. Is this story about hackers? no.
I am sure that this misunderstanding will never go away..

Is it cheating to enter the keyword 'crypto' into a search engine? No. Is it cheating to enter the keyword 'crypto' into a library search database? No Is it cheating to ask qualified individuals what they think a good book on 'crypto' is? No Is it cheating to ask qualified people to write an essay for him to use in his paper? Yeah.
I do not think that there is anything wrong with a student asking a few questions to a completely qualified discussion forum. You obviously do not know the true purpose of education. I thought it was to learn...
And if this student uses a book that someone suggests here, then that student has done fine research in my book!
..that is going to reply to this flame-bait, but oh well!
You make a decent point, but it is wrong nonetheless. Yes, I know that in your day you had to walk uphill in the snow barefoot (because they did not have nice Nike shoes back then) all to get to the library (which was housed in a small, damp, cold, cave) to read carvings on the wall with a torch. We have the internet for a reason, and that (main reason) is for education. If this guy took your advise, he would be limited to a library, and a million 'garbage' hits from any given search engine. He is asking the/. community just as a law student would ask a legal discussion forum where he could get good material for a given debate.
If you code, do you close your code and tell people that if they want to do a certain task, that they should re-invent the wheel? I understand that learning how to do applied research (digging through results from a search engine) is actually a good learning experience, but asking the/. community a relevant question such as this is excellent research!
Now if only the media would ask us questions to better understand technology...
For example, if I told you that you can buy cocaine at a specific liquor store, using certain passwords, I haven't committed a crime.
I do not know about elsewhere in the US, but in Michigan, it is a felony (4-15yr) to tell someone where they can obtain an illegal controlled-substance. (Personal experience) The charge is "Aiding and abetting the distribution of a controlled substance." and I was charged with it after I told a 'friend' to call another mutual friend when he asked me if I knew where he could get a certain herb. Well, lo and behold I was charged with that felony, but the charge was later dropped because it was lame.
(Disclaimer: I am not making light of your very insightful post. I just had to say this!)
So what happens to a minority male 17-24 yr old that wears black, plays video games, and makes less than $15,000/yr?
Tough world for me! (Well, I am not a minority, but all the rest has applied during at least one point of my life.) Seriously though, you make a good point.
Man, you are lame! I hope you are full of sarcasm in your post, if not then just listen to yourself here...
You have the audicity to claim that you should have some kind of "fair use" nonsense. Let me explain something, these media companies work their arses off to provide you with top notch, affordable entertainment. If they want to limit how you view their media, then by golly they have that right.
If it were not for 'fair use', the internet would not exist as we know it. In fact, network admins like myself would not be able to make tape-backups every night! If you want to read about how wrong you are, please read this article.
Just because you geeks have can't accept a "real" OS and need some kind of command line only junk doesn't mean you have to right to break laws.
Command line only? X-windows? WTF are you talking about? Ignorance aside, do you really think that the world revolves around what you decide you like? I happen to dislike Windows, but I am not going to tell you that you cannot use it.
you don't "own" a DVD you buy, you just get to listen to it. The only people who would want to make copies are criminals, and DeCSS is ONLY GOOD FOR MAKING COPIES.
You are really showing your true intelligence now. First off, I do own about 10 DVDs. I can light them on fire, I can play frisbee with them, and I can watch them. I bought them. I want to watch them, but I do not want to buy the software to watch them when it exists for free. MPAA should be happy that DeCSS exists because I bought some DVDs to watch on my Linux workstation at home as a result! Next point is that DeCSS has N-O-T-H-I-N-G to do with solely copying. That is like saying that the CD-Player in Windows is for copying. DeCSS just unencrypts the data. I can copy the data with or without DeCSS if I wanted to. If you know anything about digital media, it is all 1s and 0s, and you can copy those.
I read somewhere on ZDnet that all you guys do is break encryption laws and pirate MP3's anyway, it makes me wonder if Linux even has legimate uses! I hope the DMCA gets you all for this kind of ungrateful, illegal, nonsence.
I read somewhere that on Jan 1, 2000 the world was going to come to an end. Watch what you read boy, because it is not always true. Do you know anything about Linux? Have you ever used Linux? Have you ever used Star-Office or Gimp? Did you know that I can pirate CDs in Windows 95, NT, 2000? In fact, Adaptec made burning and ripping audio CDs really easy with EZ Cd Creator 4.0! Did you know that there is (was) a program last summer called DVDrip (or something like that) that ran only in Windows.
Makes me wonder if all you guys do is pirate MP3s and DVDs and break copyright laws too!
OK, as you have already read, the last two lines of the article: But Kolasky had a different view. He said the appeals court decision noted that what the Justice Department had deemed a violation "actually benefited consumers by giving them a better software product."

M$ already offered to make it's pricing fair and open to the public, and to open source code to Windows including W2K. On top of that, M$ offered to seperate IE and the OS completely. The govt attorneys said that the offer was not enough, but since the offer was in the right direction, Judge Jackson decided a little more time might bring a good settlement. It looks like M$ is going to have to do a lot to get the feds happy, and I am anxious to hear the outcome.
Since my NCAA Basketball Bracket is all messed up with the exception of MSU; I am going to post my prediction:
Prediction: M$ will not offer a settlement that will please the fed attorneys, so Judge Jackson will have to rule on it at the end of the week or the beginning of next week. The feds want the following: Fair pricing, open code, IE and OS seperate, and a split up into divisions. (Perhaps OS, Office, Utilities, Games...) M$ will offer all of the above except the split up. Judge Jackson will go with what the feds want except the opening of the source will not be exactly as 'open' as we see fit.
True, it was quite a nipple, but I recall Lucy Lawless (She-ra,..no.. Zena) was singing the national anthem for the NHL playoffs game (Detroit vs Anaheim) maybe two years ago and she reached for the sky and so did a nipple... I remember this quite explicitly because I made a comment to my girlfriend about how they just went for the stage.
