    Let's see, so far, computer models *can* predict the weather and are probably *right* about climate.

    But unsurprisingly have failed to accurately manage loan portfolios to higher risk buyers, failed to manage risk books for hedge funds, could not capture currency trading, simply because they are not predictable because they are traded by panic driven, idiots who are swayed by rumour, non existent trends, and computer predictions!

    The predictable but complex is predictable, the unpredictable ... is unpredictable! no matter what the overpaid consultant says!

    DSL 50MB install .... not bloated

    Ubuntu default install is bloated but can be slimmed greatly .... ...XP/Vista/Winodws 7 bloated and cannot be slimmed down...

    Most of the above services only apply in the USA and you had to sign up for (and read the agreement) the only exception I can see is search history (which is linked only to your ip address) all the rest you either signed away your rights to the information when you signed up, or is only linked to you if you want it to be

    For defending yourself against bears ... you have a point.... but that would be a shotgun, not a handgun, not a submachine gun ....

    Target shooting .... requires a sports rifle, or a specialised pistol, again not an ordinary handgun

    All of these should be used as tools of the trade, not kept at home, not carried about with you

    No it's simpler than that ... the IWF simply scans the internet for things they consider that their members *might* get prosecuted for allow people to see, and one click later the site is blacklisted

    Every so often someone at the IWF clicks on the "No" button for a well known site and the site gets blacklisted, this is what happens when a self regulated independent body get censoring rights ...

    Most people are unaware what operating system they have... or even what one is ....

    When I ask most people what operating system they are using a typical answer is "Word" or "Internet Explorer" since that's what they spend most of their time running ...

    Her internet connection would probably have "just worked" if she had tried it, the CD is not required for Windows either ...

    The documents would have opened in OpenOffice if she had had it installed ... ... methinks she did not try very hard, Grandmothers and small children can do this but not her?

    It's worse than that.... before legal downloads P2P file sharing of music caused their sales to go .... UP!

    The only thing that seems to have made the sales go down is *legal* downloads ....

    Since the oldest software in the world is less than 50 years old you have just said that investing in computers is worthless as they do not produced lasting benefits ....

    If there is not one character of code in common with the original version, you still need the original version to have existed to build on, note $2billion is what is spent on defence every 2 days ....

    Butchers Knife - used for butchering/preparing meat, can also be used to kill
    Brick - used to build walls, can also be used to kill
    TV - use for watching programs, can also be used to kill...

    Gun - Used to threaten, damage, maim, and kill .... has no other uses ....

    So a responsible person who has a gun is still responsible when drunk?

    People who need guns : Armed forces, Police - both of whom should only carry while on duty and are fully accountable for all uses of their weapons

    Sorry do you have engineers digging through the sourcecode of Microsoft systems .... No so why would you need to do it with OpenSource systems ...?

    Just get it from a vendor who sells support and get it preconfigured how you want it and duplicate ti to every machine ... just like all large companies do with Windows...?

    In my experience... The change from Office 2003 to Office 2007 requires *more* training than the switch from Office 2003 to OOo !

    So people are buying the ludicrously expensive Sharepoint system then?

    If I were foolish enough to, then I too would be using nothing but Microsoft... since it requires Windows, IIS, MS-SQL, Exchange, Office, Outlook, etc... to work at all! ... and any client without the proper tools is locked out...

    Sharepoint the ultimate lock-in tool ....

    Anyone can produce their own records like any small business they can get a loan or sponsorship for their debut album, with this they can hire a good studio, collaborate with a good producer engineer and session musicians, and make far more money on the deal than they could hope to with one of the big 4 ... the only thing they are lacking is publicity ... but when did you last hear a good new song by a new band that was signed to one of the big 4? Usually you hear them *before* they sign up, so what are the record companies actually doing for their money?

    The classic measure of Developer performance is lines of code .... .... but out of the guy who writes 100 lines of code all of which end up unchanged in the final product, and the guy who writes 10,000 lines of code of which only 100 lines end up in the end product and all of those modified, who should you keep ...?

    Want to tell that to the heads of IT who seemingly all use Firefox/Opera/Chrome and do all the IT purchasing .... ...You seem to have just accused everyone who does not IE of being a freeloader? Does that incluyde the one who paid for Opera before it was free?
