All good points, and HTML design habits definitely shouldn't be legislated, however bad they may be. Does this whole thing sould like political correctness to anyone?

You're not handicapped or crippled, you're physically/mobility challenged. You're not retarded, you're mentally challanged. You're not blind, you're visiually impaired.

Part and parcel of this philosophy is the belief that 'challenged' people should be able to, want to, or even HAVE to lead normal lives.

If you're blind, you just have to accept that you're different and have limited abilities and there are certain things you just can't do! And should you happen upon a website you can't read because it has no alt tags, you don't sue the webmaster. You leave and go elsewhere.

If I visit a page with broken HTML that prevents it from rendering at all, I don't hit the speed-dial to my lawyer and start litigation, I go somewhere else and don't come back.

It's very simple. This story just boggles my mind and makes a farce out of the legal system.

  10. Plug for cable? on Cable vs. DSL, Explained · · Score: 5
The article was anything but impartial and well balanced, I found.

The description why cable modems are cool (page 2) applies equally well to DSL. In fact, take the first few paragraphs, replace cable with DSL and you have a perfectly good and valid piece of writing.

To say that a DSL line is shared with the phone service is a lame excuse. The phone line bandwidth is so tiny compared to the total frequency range of the line DSL uses, that it's not even an issue, certainly nothing even close to the amount of sharing going on on cable lines.

In the same paragraph saying that cable is the king of bandwidth and that the writer gets 7 mb/s is the statement that the modem is limited to 600 kb/s. So which is it?

And then the dismissal of the issue of line sharing (page 3). If you get 600kb/s on a cable modem, and that's enough to satisy you, then DSL will do fine as well. I routinely get 600kb/s on DSL and I'm near the bottom of the serviceability scale for DSL.

Then you have the upload speeds. How can standard cable service even compete with the ul caps?

And prices for DSL are coming down fast these days, at least over here (Calgary, Canada). You can get a 768kb/s line for some $50/month (Canadian!, that's like 5 cents US), which almost matches cable service prices.

I will admit, that from reading warious posts around /. and other forums, DSL service (as in people service) sucks; this gives a lot of advantage to cable service. But the article is not a well balanced article on cable vs DSL; rather it's cable vs 'something I've never really tried just heard about and I hate it and I think cable is oh so cool' article.

So lets keep things in perspective; this article does cut through some of the hype about cable, but merely mentions DSL in passing as some other internet technology.

Ugh, it's too early for this...

While before ebay people have always had collecting as a hobby, obsession even, ebay connects so many people, creating a huge number of suppliers of any given item or category. Certainly larger than in RL where a dedicated collector might exhaust all local or regional suppliers. On ebay, there is always someone willing to sell something. I'm sure if you put out a call for peoples' mothers' ashes, you'd find more than a few people taking your offer.

I can see how ebay makes normally reasonable collectors obsessed; you just can't have a complete collection of anything, there's always more to buy. And just when you think you've got it all, there will be yet another seller soon, and there you go adding to your collection again.

  21. Why so complicated? on Feature: Getting DSL · · Score: 2
Why is the process of getting DSL so complicated in the US? Why do you have to deal with 3 parties to get your DSL line? Is it because of the regulations?

Here in Canada telcos have to allow co-location so that individual ISPs can put their own DSL equipment (DSLAMs) where the phone switches are. So the ISP deals with the telco to get you a phone line if needed, remove line conditioning, worry about monthly line charges, provide modem and routing equipment, and give you bandwidth on the backend. All with you filling out one piece of paper, and paying one charge.

Would not the DSL providers also offer Internet services in the US? Why would you deal with both an ISP and a DSL company, and the telco to boot? If the telecomm regulations down there allow for it, the market is ripe for an all-in-one DSL provider.
