2. [...] If they took a feature from the Harmony kit and implemented it
This particular point refered to improvements to QT that were later used by KDE, but not yet implemented in Harmony. Granted, it wasn't worded in the best possible way, but twisting words does not make for a good argument.
Somewhat OT, but Win98 also treats ATA/66 as SCSI, which means if you have two of them (BE6 MB) it barfs for some reason; some parts seem to think everything's groovy, others mix up the devices in all manner of fun ways. I can't defrag the drives because scandisk finds a corrupt boot sector or something and 'fixes' it thereby making C look like D or D look like E. I'm sure they'll get it right eventually..
Of all the software sitting on my Windows box, some of it is pirated, some is starting to nag me regularly, and a lot is paid for/registered. But only in the game genre do I have 0% pirated goods. I only play games that I think are good, and if I've gotten even a little bit of enjoyment out of a game I buy it. Even if I play illegit copies for weeks and weeks, eventually I'll have the box. The game industry is just so tough and it's so hard to produce a quality game and make some money that developers of good games really do deserve every penny they make. It's not like, say, office productivity software that large corps buy by thousands of licences, the game industry is driven by individuals. When was the last time your typical large faceless corporation bought all its employees a copy of Quake? Here every single buyer counts, margins are tiny, press is scarce, and you can't charge for 'upgrades'.
If you have a pirated game you play on a regular basis, do pay for it. Because if enough people hold out the developer just won't make any money off the game and will go under.
Not to crack a mom joke, but most moms are likely to make the list. The most clueless and least knowledgable will say 'well, my mom can be trusted' and add her to their trusted zone.
MS clients can log in using standard Kerberos servers, but standard clients cannot get MS authentification.
Err, isn't this the other way around? Since unix clients don't require the extended info, they can authenticate against an nt server just fine, but not the other way around (because they _do_ need the extra info).
MS actually touts this feature saying everything _is_ standards compliant; just run nt on your auth servers!
In these very litigation-happy times (in the US anyways) companies are fighting all the suing slippery-sidewalk tripping morons with all kinds of disclaimers. Sure you can say, well, who would sue us over a feature of our interface that caused someone on way too much caffeine to select the wrong option, or let someone (heaven forbid) divide by 0 (and not even in one of our apps). A couple of decades ago this would be total nonsense. Not today. You can sue over anything, real or imagined (yes, boys and girls, even perceived damage, or even a remote risk of damage will get you in front of a judge, now go make some money!).
Of course software companies disclaim all responsibility, if they didn't everyone and their dog would sue them these days.
Ahh, this looks to be a slashdot specific exploit. It makes slashdot put your loginid and password in the url, and redirects back to the script thus transmitting the referrer.
It's actually en exploit discussed on CERT where a malicious web site can embed some script in a link to a cgi script, which in turn pastes it into the resulting page unaltered and the victim's browser executes it.
In this case the script is a bit of javascript that outputs your slashdot cookie via search.pl. All javascript enabled browsers are affected by this.
I have done a web based email reader recently, and the unique cookie assigned can only be used by the ip address it was issued to. If some other ip tries to request a page with that cookie, it gets rejected. Such a trivial technique, works well too.
Proxies of course make it look like everyone has the same ip, but this uses SSL which normally doesn't get proxied.
Not to flamebait here or anything, but can someone, once and for all, list what exactly is the problem with ASP/VBS? MS-derived is not a valid problem. Neither is runs on IIS, runs on NT, it's VB. Actual problems and deficiencies. I keep seeing people saying ASP is bad, but no one seems to say why. I'll admit to writing some (ok, extensive) amount of ASP/VBS, and it seems fine. Runs a little slow. Lots of pre-made objects available for it, easy to use, not bad to write if you design the app well enough.
Until you realize (too late) that on some unix systems killall will ignore any arguments and kill all processes owned by running user. Don't try this at work as root.
Does the presence of unusual constructs mean that Perl code cannot be maintained?
No, it doesn't. It just means you have to understand the constructs.
Really?! You mean one must understand the Perl syntax in order to be able to maintain code written in it? Well, that certainly is a valid criticism of Perl...
Yes, however, corporations and government don't have opposing views here. The government gains more control over its citizens by having corps do its dirty work (that would normally be unconstitutional / illegal for a government to do). The corporations get to be left alone and pursue higher profits.
While during the Renaissance you had the church and the intellectualists very clearly in opposition. It was easy to separate them and maintain the balance of power and freedoms. Corporations and governments kinda like each other. Who's going to be separating them?

I see a number of posts saying Linux won't support this. Because HDCP (like CSS) requires a closed source solution. Because there won't be anyone willing to pay the license fee.
Please read the article. Even though it doesn't explicitly spell it out, it is more or less clear that this is an interface to interface protocol. So your video card will encrypt data going out to the monitor. "HDCP encrypts the final link, from the device to the display..." This sounds to me like a purely a hw solution, and requires no drivers and no software to operate correctly. The video card manufacturers license the technology, and so do monitor manufacturers, and that's it!
I have NEVER read such total drivel and nonsense from a supposedly technically inclined person on a technical subject. My jaw was literally on the floor as I was reading the article... the premise, the 'facts', the argument, the conclusions, even the topic/problem itself... so horribly illogical and twisted...
Words fail describing this... how could ANYONE read that and make any sense out of it.
The guy may be an authority (on guis), but he certainly doesn't have a clue about what he's writing in that article.
As the tech brief section of the unveiling revealed, the cpu can receive updates of the opcodes it uses along with a code morpher engine update to generate them. So essentially, at any given point in time a given crusoe cpu can be running an instruction set that is different from the one sitting next to it.
In effect there are no 'native' crusoe instructions. Indeed, tm is reluctant to even release the current instructions for fear that major developers will code to them and then force backward compatibility on tm!
The idea behind crusoe is apprently to dissociate the software from the hardware by having developers write to a known target (x86, sparc, java bytecode, alpha, whatever) and have the code morphing unit of the cpu (or 'bios') convert that to whatever happens to be the native instruction set at the time.
The germans have some pretty strict rules against infiltration of their government. Which is exactly what scientology is accused of (and found guilty and banned from germany).

No, it'll go to the lawyers.
GST is not _about_ 7%', it's _exactly_ 7%.

But not at +4 and definitely not Funny

It's just a result of sloppy coding.
Ditto for IE4 on NT4 (all patched up).

The _just_ might be a little busy moving to the new server.
So why does it suck so much?

Of course it won't need 'service packs'. But administrators are advised to check out the 'update packs' on a regular basis. ;)
