  1. Good luck on ACLU & EPIC Will Challenge CIPA · · Score: 1

First of all, it's a lame idea that young people should be PROTECTED with software against data that is considered controversial or harmful and otherwise not be something you'd want to get caught in church with. It should be pretty obvious that this is not the way to raise your children (To be weak minded fools who depend upon other people to make "good" decisions for them). This may need to be addressed, but through parenthood and not content filters. What's more is there was already filtering going on. You can't get just any book at the library you know. Try finding a book by an independent publisher of controversial materials like Paladin Press in a public library. This is nothing new, they are just extending this to internet access. I'm sure you've heard this before but it is true. If kids want to find stuff they will find it, whatever that may be, porn, drugs, guns, etc. People need to grow up themselves and learn to raise thier children instead of depending on the schools, libraries and dot coms, governments, etc. Heres an example loophole. If you are/were a smart kid then you probably already know this. Your parents let you hang out at the shopping mall with your friends right? Or they at least let you stay in a store and look while they go buy the new Windows of the day or whatever. Most malls have a bookstore if not more than one. You can often find much more there than the library will give you access to, for example the bookstore at the new shopping mall in Memphis sells high times magazine and other stuff, and they could care less who reads what.

I RTFA, but I'm still not clear on the confusion about this. Can anyone please provide a specific example (call or email log, newsgroup post, vague recollection, anything) where even a single user became confused between the two applications, or is this just a preemptive confusion stopper? All I've read is talk about the legal mumbo jumbo and little mention about the actual issue that this is supposed to address. I'm not saying anyone is full of all the crap in the entire world, but I'd like to know if anyone has seen where this is really an issue to either SSH or OpenSSH.

FTP programs usually use the word ftp in the name. Yeah, some person could somehow, someway get confused between cuteftp and nftp, but calling it for what it is to identify it's primary purpose/protocol seems better than having wierd names that would make searching for alternative applications much more difficult. Making aliases for all the protocols is what I think will add confusion.

I recently applied for a promotion and was ridiculously more qualified than the other applicants but my resume was ignored (only 5 submitted) because one of the people to apply had a friend in the department and the rest were denied interviews. The truth is you don't get a lot of places on ability. You get there by sucking and time restraints ARE a big factor some of the time but not always.

I know many people who have worked hard on top of going to college, myself included (University of Memphis while working full time at McDonalds was not easy). By snobby college kids I wasn't trying to say that you have to be rich to go to school. I am referring to the elitist behavior that many grads take. Just because someone has a black belt in martial arts does not mean he can beat the stuffing out of anyone up that does not share that distinction or even gone through any formal combat training.

Also as far as bridge building goes, I personally don't know anybody who grew up spending thier whole lives building bridges but I know many who have dedicated the majority of thier existence to computers. My friends father is an incredible mechanic. He never went to a school to learn it, but he beats the pants off of anybody in town and the smart people take thier cars to him instead of to the butchers at the local garage. He makes quite a living out of his home. They repair place should have hired him but instead overlooked him because of his lack of formal training. Now addition to missing out on a good employee they are now losing many customers to him. They have even threatened legal action against him to try to scare him out of business. Computers are similar to auto repair in that they are both technical in nature and easily accessible for the average person to learn/gain experience in if they have the will to. Although college at least for me was valuable, there is nothing magical that it offers that can't be learned outside its walls and many people do just fine without it.

Every person is unique and you have to judge each person on a case by case basis. To not do so is stereotyping. This is common among snobby college kids, and big businesses. Not everyone who goes to college has greater skill. The real danger is the perpetuation of these lame generalizations.
